Frank Thomas is a good fit in Seattle. He batted .277, leading the Blue Jays with 26 home runs and 95 RBIs in 2007. Switch-hitter Jose Vidro, who is Seattle's DH, has a batting average of .208, only 2 HR, and over seventy at bats.
Another reason Seattle is a good spot for Thomas is that the Mariners are playoff contenders this year. The average batting average for Designated batters is .247, while his is .208. He has had 4 0 RBI games out of the last 5.
On the otherhand, Tomas is above league average in both RBIs and HRs. No other AL team needs him more than the Mariners.

Wow. Amazing theory for the first part. If that is true, that would make Frank Thomas an even better choice for the Red Sox.. right? Cuz David Ortiz, their DH, is batting .177 with 2 homeruns.
Boston is in playoff contention too. And guess what? They are closer to the World Series than the Mariners are.
But, my choice isnt Boston.
Going simply by teams right now, is the Baltimore Orioles.
Yes, they are building for the future, but right now they are 2nd in the AL East without any power. Frank Thomas would provide a munch needed clean-up hitter for them.
Our current clean-up man is Kevin Millar. Kevin - freakin- Millar. That sure isnt powerful.
Just look at the ballpark. Camden Yards would be best friends with the Big Hurt. Frank is slugging a career .506 at Camden. That all includes 15 HRs.
Imagine how this would help the Orioles. You would have protection for Nick Markakis in the line-up. He could produce better numbers. Then, if Frank bats 5th, there is protection for Millar. Or, if Frank bats 6th, there is protection for the .300+ batting Luke Scott
"No other AL team needs him more than the Mariners. "

David Ortiz has always pulled through for the Red Sox in the past. Jose Vidro isn't as important to the Mariners as Ortiz is to Boston.
When you say that Frank Thomas is batting .506 at Camden Yards, have you ever thought that the pitching might have something to do with it?
Well, we know that Kevin Millar is their clean-up hitter. But he isn't their DH. Where would they put Frank Thomas in the lineup. They already have Aubrey Huff, who is averaging .238 BA, 2 HR, and 14 RBI. Those are some pretty impressive stats for a DH.
Kevin Millar isn't playing bad at all. He is averaging .313, excellent for a clean-up hitter. He also has 3 HR and 8 RBIs on the season. Frank Thomas won't be much of an improvement over Millar. Jose Vidro isn't even on the same planet as Millar or Huff. A player with 15 hits in 72 AB doesn't deserve to be a starter for the Mariners.
Gu3 said 04/22, 07:39 PM
Since Millar isnt the DH, there would be defensive changes as well. Huff would have to move out of the DH role and possibly see time platooning at LF, 1B, and 3B. Huff could also come off the bench to pinch hit for Luis Hernandez in the late innings. Or, if you prefer Millar on the bench, Huff can play 1st.
Kevin Millar may be batting .313 but how long will that keep up? His career average is .288.
How is Frank Thomas not an improvement over Millar? Thomas has 516 HRs and a .302 BA.

Bringing Aubrey Huf to play 1st, 3rd, or LF, the Orioles would lose more than they would gain. If they bring in Huff to play 1st, you would have to play with Aubrey Huff's BA of .238, instead of Millar's .313. If you brought him in to play LF, you would lose Luke Scott's BA of .361.
With the Mariners, you could slide Vidro into RF to take the place of Brad Wilkerson, who has a BA of .182, which isn't losing anything comapared to Thomas going to Baltimore.
How long will he keep it up? Kevin Millar has had a very consistent career. He is due for a breakout season.

Fine, then keep Huff on the bench. "They already have Aubrey Huff, who is averaging .238 BA, 2 HR, and 14 RBI. Those are some pretty impressive stats for a DH." So they are impressive for a guy playing a position in which his only job is to hit.. yet they arent good enough for a fielder's numbers?
There is no way Millar breaks out at age of 36? I dont think so.
With the Orioles you have pieces that you can play with. Thomas not hitting? Lets play Aubrey. Millar not hitting? Lets play Aubrey. Aubrey not hitting? Lets play Thomas...

Mariners don't really need Thomas
They kept Vidro because he came through for them last year. Guillian, on the other hand, did not.
Plus he's cheap. If he comes through for them again this year, the front office looks like geniuses.
If not then .... it was a cheap experiment
They're really looking for another Edgar Martinez to give a long term DH a home. Vidro fits that bill

Royals. They have pitching but still need hitting because Guillien has been a bust so far.
