i am going to have to say jimmy rollins. he is the mvp winner of last year and he won the gold glove so not only was he the best player but the best defensive shortstop there was 2.

rollins is obviously a master with the glove and he is all around a great hitter. he can hit for great power which is rare for a ss and he can hit for contact. plus rollins has some speed. rollins last year had 30 homeruns and 94 rbis. he hit a good .296 and had 41 steals. he had 716 at bats mlb leading but only 85 ks. he had 20 triples 2. he was a beast and is a great ss

HMMMM this seems pretty obvious right now it is Hanley Ramirez. It will be Tulo.

But since I am assuming this is right now it has to be Hanley Ramirez. It is pretty darn obvious.

Besides Holliday should have won the MVP last year.

He hit .332 last year. As a leadoff hitter. He drove in 81 runs in a pretty awful Marlins lineup.

He scored 125 runs in yet again a pretty bad Marlin's lineup. Cabrera couldn't awlays get him home.

He had a better OBP than Rollins.

He also hit 29 Home runs in a cavernous baseball stadium. Rollins home park is a launching pad for baseball players. Explaining his more triples and Homers.

Overall though Hanley Ramirez had a better slugging percentage .562 to .531.

Most impressive is that Ramirez also stole 51 bases.

i will give you the defensive edge though. Even though so far this year Ramirez has been better than Rollins defensively.

Since this argument is right now as well, You have to look at this season. Ramirez's number are way better across the board. Also he has stayed healthy this season. Rollins is on the DL.

Plus Ramirez is much younger 24, Rollins is now 29 and will start slipping this year.

Good Luck.

I'd say Hanley, even though I know his D has been bad.

i went Ramirez as well Coletrain

April 22, 2008  11:00 PM ET

will argue tomorow. remember though one is the best defense and one is the worst

April 22, 2008  11:01 PM ET

We're finally on the same page tonight! lol

April 22, 2008  11:01 PM ET

Rollins is not the best defensively

April 22, 2008  11:01 PM ET

Yup it took us sometime Train.

April 22, 2008  11:51 PM ET

what do you mean it will be tulo??? tulo only like 2 years younger than hanram.... i dont ever see tulo being the best ss in the mlb with reyes and hanram in about the same age category.

April 22, 2008  11:53 PM ET

I think that Tulo's defense will get him there. His offense will never be as good as Ramirez

April 23, 2008  03:05 AM ET

it will be Tulo, yet u say sum1 else? I dont get it ?

April 23, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Hanley's defense- ugh. Somewhere Jimmer is stroking out...

April 23, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Better argument

April 23, 2008  09:56 AM ET

jimmer hate ramirez

April 23, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I do not hate Hanley Ramirez...he's a fine HITTER...he's just a horrible defensive player...he needs to move from SS....maybe CF....maybe 2B....I don't know, but he didn't improve at all from his rookie season to his 2nd season...

April 23, 2008  10:21 AM ET

'I think that Tulo's defense will get him there. His offense will never be as good as Ramirez'

How do we know this? Did yo ucompare Tulo's rookie year to Hanley's rookie year...they're earily similiar...and Tulo set the record for HR and RBIs by a NL rookie SS...

How can you say, definitively, that his offense will never be as good as Hanley's?

...anyway, what we do know for sure is that Tulo is WAY better defensively...and that, as a rookie, he became the team leader of the Rockies...which is something when you consider the team has the guy who should have won MVP last year and also was a veteran like Helton on it...

April 23, 2008  10:23 AM ET

P.S....

how many nationally televised games does the reigning NL Champs have this year...like 4? Or the same amount the Mets and Phillies have already had?

there's a reason why people don't think Tulo belongs in the same category as Reyes, Hanley and so on...they never get to see him play...

April 23, 2008  11:41 PM ET

That is true.

If you go to Baseball Prospectus they actually have Ramirez as a better fielder than Rollins

They are out of their minds...no chance Hanley is a better fielder than Rollins...I mean, based on THIS year alone...after 20, 21 games, yeah...but seriously, Hanley is a disaster at SS
