Granted Lidstrom is going to win the Norris trophy, but Sergei Gonchar should have been one of the other two finalists.

Let's just compare stats:
Gonchar: 78GP, 12G, 53A, 13+/-, 66 PlM
Phaneuf: 82GP, 17G, 43A, 12+/-, 182 PlM
Chara: 77GP, 17G, 34A, 14+/-, 114 PlM

Gonchar has produced more than the other two players while accumulating way fewer penalty minutes. Gonchar has posted some of the best numbers of his career yet for some odd reason, he again will not be in the running for the Norris trophy (He has never been a finalist for this trophy).

What can this man do for some recognition? He has put up at least 50 points every year except one since 2000, but this year he was not even on the fan ballot for voting in the All Star game. Luckily the GM's of the league were smart enough to include him in the All Star game.

Plus, Gonchar has been paired with 3 defensemen this year instead of having one linemate. At various points this year, Gonchar's linemate has gotten injured and while Gonchar was getting familiar with his new linemate, he was still able to produce at the highest level. His 53 assists show that he is one of the better passers of the game.

Hard for me to bring myself to argue against him, being a Penguins fan myself, but I think they were right leaving him off of the ballot.

The Norris Trophy is supposed to be awarded to the defenseman that shows the best all-around ability. Sure, Gonchar may be a better scorer than Chara and Phaneuf, but scoring isn't all that matters to this trophy. The other two have something that Gonchar doesn't have: good defense.

Although I do not live in Pittsburgh anymore, I can tell you that plenty of fans, myself and other prominent members of this site included, can't wait to see Gonchar leave the Penguins after his contract expires. Sure, he puts points on the board, but he gives up plenty more points then the others do, too.

The point is, bad defense can't win you an award created for defensemen. To see just how good someone us, you can't just look at stats. You have to actually watch his all-around game, and his all-around game really isn't that good. He has always put up points, and never been in the final three for the award. Don't you think there is a reason for that?

I think in previous years that has been a valid case. However, this year he has definitely stepped up his defensive side, which should all the more warrant his case to be at least considered ahead of Phaneuf or Chara. Your saying he has given up plenty of points. I think you're confusing him with Whitney or Sydor this year.

Gonchar has been playing the penalty kill more so this year than other years. I'm guessing you haven't watched Gonchar that much this year because he has been credited for 124 blocked shots this year, 2nd highest on the team.

Also Gonchar was paired up playing against the other team's top line. Gonchar was playing against Heatley and Spezza in this last playoff series and we all saw how well he did shutting them down.

You can't go to previous years and say well since he was bad in defense we can't vote for him. If we look at it that way, he has the most goals for a defensemen since 2000 (111G). Since 2000 Lidstrom has 442 points to Gonchar's 431, Zubov is next with 352 points. Gonchar has been a steady offensive force in prior years but this year he took his game to the next level, and provided the Pens with a solid well rounded defensemen.

How can you say that Gonchar has really taken his game to the next level this season? His numbers were pretty much in line with what they have been over the past five years on offense. And why would a defenseman who can score not have a ton of points playing for the Penguins? Look who he plays with. Sidney Crosby plays with him in the starting lineup, and Sid the Kid is easily the best at setting up goals that the game has seen in a long time. With a player like that setting him up all the time, he should have more points than the average defenseman, a lot more. And even when Crosby went down, he got to play in with Malkin. Crosby and Malkin are likely both in the top three players in the league, with Ovechkin being the other.

I was actually able to watch about one third of the Pen's game this season, so I got to see him play a lot. If you want to throw out stupid accusations like that, I'm going to go ahead and guess that you don't know as much about hockey as you realize.

Gonchar plays more than the other defenseman, therefore he should have more blocked shots. His defense may have shown a small improvement this year, if any, but it isn't enough to warrant him as a finalist

Look who Lidstrom plays with too. Zetterburg, Datsyuk, Rafalski. He has some great players around him too. What makes Gonchar great this year is that he still performed despite the constant line shifts. Hockey players perform better when they are familiar with their linemates. Gonchar didnt have his usual linemate with him for the 80% of the season (Eaton tore his ACL). Instead he played with others like Orpik and Scuderi and three different goalies this year.

Like you said, the Norris trophy just isn't about offense. What put Gonchar ahead of Phaneuf and Chara is that he outperformed them in offense, but also that THIS year he was playing against the top lines of teams and shutting them down. Just looking at the Ottawa series, Gonchar and Orpik stopped Heatley, Spezza and Alfredsson from scoring and only allowed one assist between their top three players.

Look at it another way. 46 of his 65 points were on the powerplay, which would not affect his +/-, however he had a rating of a 13+/- for the season. That shows that he is on the ice stoppping the other team from scoring. So in your reference to he gives up "plenty more points" just doesn't hold water.

Forfeited Turn

As Leech states, Gonchar's defense has always been the stumbling block during his career...

April 23, 2008  11:12 AM ET

gonchar was supposed to be a star

April 23, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Supposed to be? He's been in the All Star game 4 times and this yea he wasnt even on the ballot. What more can he do?

Bigalke, yes career, but this year is what mattered for the Norris trophy. He played amazing defense for the Pens.

Gonchar is a GOOD defensive player. Don't discount what he does.
Don't associate aggresive physicial play with defense, there are other ways to skin a Ranger.

The simple fact that I am voting for Mustard here should speak volumes for his argument for Gonchar. He should have been considered. Pens have a very weak defence and have had goal tending issues throughout the season. Coffey and Leetch won Norris awards not because of their outstanding defensive skills. I do think Gonchar has stepped up his game this year. Vote Left

Baunded, I appreciate your vote however, the only real goaltending issue this year (2008) was which goalie should play Conklin or Fleury.Yes, in the beginning of the season, Fleury struggled in goal, but since his injury the Pens goalies have played great.

April 25, 2008  09:36 AM ET

this is taking forever to finish....

April 25, 2008  12:15 PM ET

This was a relevant topic three days ago when I started this but now the Norris finalists selection seem so far away...

April 25, 2008  12:44 PM ET

he forfeited his turn and still gets votes. I just can't win.

April 25, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Quit whining man. I missed an argument, but my other two were good enough to warrant votes. It was 6-3 before it reached this, so me missing that argument is causing me to lose votes.

April 25, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Your argument was based on Gonchar's defense not being good. That was it. You didnt argue that Chara or Phaneuf deserved it ahead of him. You didn't have anything to say about him being able to produce despite never having a steady linemate or goalie.

April 26, 2008  08:07 AM ET

As much as i hate to vote for a guy who didnt use all of his arguments,I have to,his two were better then rm's three and the stats favor bigs guy also,so voteeeeeeeee----------------->>>>>>>>> ;>>>>>>>>>>>
