Coltslaxer32 needs redemption said 04/23, 04:28 PM
The Baltimore Ravens finished 5-11 last year despite having quarterback problems then entire year...Will it be Kyle Boller or Troy Smith? I don't know but with the hiring of their new head coach and with the fact that theyre offense is getting better their is no way they will have another disappointing season like last year and here's why:
The Ravens defense may be old but the young talent they have is making the unit a lot better. Terrel Sugga and Haloti Ngata are two young players who have what it takes to really help out this unit. Also veterans such as Kelly Gregg, Ray Lewis, Chris McCalister and Ed Reed are still quite active among themselves.
The offense may need help but on the rushing side they are fine. Willis McGahee was a perfect accquisation for this team and he will only get better from last year. And the Ravens may have found a new quarterback in Troy Smith who led them into a key season finale win over the Steelers. Thier O line is old but can still grudge a season out.
The special teams is working out as well. Matt Stover is one of the best kickers of all time and the young kick returner they have is very good.
The Ravens are climbing the ladder
PackBrew42 is Truffle Shufflin said 04/23, 04:54 PM
Comeback year? Climbing the ladder? I guess I'd like to be told what a comeback year is? A 6-10 year, 7-9?
The Ravens have Kyle Boller - a QB who has thrown 1 more TD than INTs. Troy Smith has played 4 games total with 76 passes attempted (or 19/game)
They need some help at offensive line and REALLY need receiving help. 23rd in passing yards and 24th in points scored. Basically their whole offense (except their running game) can use improvements.
And while they were the 6th best D in defensive YPG, they were 22nd in points ALLOWED. Their D is old and they need some major help in their secondary. With their aging D, the loss of any of their defensive vets will hurt them significantly.
Within their division, the only team I can see them having a good chance of beating is the Bungles but I can't see them winning their division or improving anywhere past 3rd in their own division. Non-divisional opponents are: Houston, Titans, Indy, Miami, Oakland, Giants, Philly, Washington, Dallas, Jags. Not very easy. Maybe they can beat Miami, Titans, Oakland, & Philly and 2 wins again Cincy giving them 6 Wins.
Tough to say tho, lots of the winnable games will go either way
Coltslaxer32 needs redemption said 04/23, 05:02 PM
exactly, either way....they will definately win one of those so called "losses" in out of division opponents and they definately will win one "loss" in division game. They have what it takes to beat the Browns.
Ill tell you here.....at least thats better than 5-11 and they will do better than 6-10. Those 6 wins are deifnate wins. Plus I would add two more that will be upsets. 8-8 is a comback comepared to 5-11 after a 13-3 playoff season. And the tandom of Kyle Boller and Troy Smith will really help out this passing offense. Todd Heap, Derrick Mason and Dimetrius Willaims can also cut up some of the pressure on the QB's.
So look for a comeback year
PackBrew42 is Truffle Shufflin said 04/23, 05:15 PM
I'm not sure 8-8 counts as a "comeback year" after being 5-11. 9-7 probably (as it is a winning record) and 10-6 definately.
You say "the tandem of Kyle Boller and Troy Smith will really help out this passing offense". Anyone who knows anything cannot keep a straight face saying that. It simply isn't true. Boller is a 1st round bust and Smith, well the jury is out on him. I can't say he's Baltimore's answer at QB after 4 games & 76 passing attempts.
Derrick Mason is up there in age (33-34) and barely got over 1k yards as the only real passing threat. Todd Heap played 6 games last season with injuries. If those injuries don't hamper his performance this year, it helps the Ravens, but not enough to really turn around the year.
As for Yamon Figurs, yeah, he's fast...but he's no Devin Hester. 1 punt & kickoff return for a touchdown is nice, but not outstanding. His kickoff return is slightly above average but punt return average is average, at best. Only 1 reception at WR last year, so I'm not sure how much impact he'll have in the receiving corp. But again, 2 return TDs are nice but nothing to go "Wow" about when compared to Hester and others.
Coltslaxer32 needs redemption said 04/23, 08:35 PM
Well nobody is Devon Hester!!!!!!that was a stupid comment!!!! If they can be a defense based team and get enough offense to score some points they will be okay. Defense wins championships. Lets remember the most famous football statement ever. And the Ravens D may be old but they are the definition of defense.
Bart Scott and Ray Lewis anchor the middle section and are tow of the best linebackers in the league, Ray Lewis if not one of the best ever.
The secondary had a tough season last year....they are far from needing help. They have Ed Reed (a top notch safety), Chris McCalister (a top notch cornerback and they have an aging Smari Rolle but they have young talent in DaWan Landry.
I dont see how you can vote against the fact the ravens will have a comeback season..........
PackBrew42 is Truffle Shufflin said 04/23, 09:19 PM
Here are reasons why the Raven's won't have a comeback season
-Rookie coach
-1 horrible QB, 1 unproven QB (and if they draft Ryan, a rookie QB)
-Old O line
-A 33 year old WR is the #1 WR on the team (who isn't that good) and a severe drop off after that
-Bad secondary
-Bad defense
-Tough schedule Pittsburgh, Indy, Titans, Giants, Jags, Washington, & Dallas were all playoff teams. That's 8 games against playoff teams (Steelersx2)
The comment that the Ravens are the definition of D which is funny since again 22nd in points allowed. They haven't gotten much younger and their secondary will probably not improve dramatically. This isn't the D that won the SB a few years ago. Paper tigers on D now
Boller & Smith are not a tandem of anything except misery. Boller is horrible and Smith is pretty unproven in 4 games (52% completion rate)
You say "If they can be a defense based team and get enough offense to score some points they will be okay" 24th best scoring offense..a measly 17.2 ppg compared to Miami (the worst team) at 16.7
Maybe in a few years but there are too many positions they need to get youth at. A comeback year will be when they're 9-7 but not this year

You think Troy Smith is going to lead your team to 6 wins. You my friend are crazy like a fox.

Do you really think that win at the end against the Steelers is an indicator that they'll turn things around? The Steelers were coasting into the playoffs as the Browns had already lost.
No proven QB, Ogden retired, still no proven significant threat at WR (no offense to Mason as he's had a good career, but if he's your number 1 WR by far at age 33/34, you're struggling). Plus, the defense is aging and you have a pretty tough schedule. I definitely wouldn't consider those 6 wins listed above as a lock.

It is very rare for a team coming off a bad year to bounce back with a new coach. They still have the same pitiful offense and no QB in the draft will be worthy of starting on day 1. I think they will be lucky to match last season'w in total. However, you are right about Stover, he is their offense. It's just too bad that kicking FGs won't win very many games.

Coltslaxer I seriously disagree with your assessment of who you think the fastest player in the league is. Reggie Bush, Leon Washington, Josh Cribbs, Michael Turner, Devin Hester, Deangelo Hall, and Warrick Dunn are the fastest players in the NFL

8-8 i would say but some teams have gone from 5-11 to 11-5 but i dont see THAT happening but 8-8 and maybe 9-7 and thats a comeback considering that would put them in wild card contention
