Interesting that you would pick a pitcher. And although Peavy is a good pick but IF I was to pick a Pitcher I would go with Brandon Webb (5-0 - 2.31 era with 29 K's in 35 IP) in 5 starts for the 1st place DBacks 15-5...vs Peavy at 3-0 - 2.00 era for San Diego at 9-12. Webb is by far a better MVP candidate.
Matt Holliday also a good pick but I had him behind Chipper Jones as my #6... But here is why I picked Hanley Ramirez and David Wright over Holliday right now...
Holliday... 4 HR, 13 RBI, .325 BA, similar #'s to his team-mate Garrett Atkins 5 HR, 15 RBI .321 BA... But I doubt that Atkins would be considered as an MVP candidate
Ramirez... 6 HR 16 RBI 5 SB .358 BA .642 SLG for the 1st place Marlins 12-8
Wright... 4 HR 19 RBI 3 SB .329 BA...23 hits and 10 doubles .671 SLG for the 10-9 Mets

Peavy so far this year has pretty similiar stats with a lower ERA, same K's, and less wins because of his offense slacking. The reason that I pick him is that he had a dominant year last year while Webb had an excellent year. Last year Webb started out fast but then slipped up in a couple starts making his ERA 3.01 not real MVP worth. Peavy on the other hand kept his amasing pace to have a 2.54 ERA adn 239 K's/
Here is why I don't have Hanley on my list even though his numbers are flat out amasing- He plays on the Marlins. To be a real MVP candadite your team has to be good and the Marlins will not be good this year. Another thing is pitchers will stop pitching to him since he has no protection in that lineup.
As for Holliday vrs. Wright here are Hollidays numbers- .325 BA, .431 OBP, .563 SLG, 4 HR, and 13 RBI. Wright has a .311 BA, .441 OBP, .635 SLG, 4 HR, and 19 RB. Those are pretty similiar numbers sp I look at last year and SB% and # OF GDP. Holliday is 5 for 5 on steals with 1 GDP while Wright is 3 for five with 3 GDP Holliday gets edge. Then in last year Holliday hit .340, 36 HR, and 137 RBI to D. W's .325, 30 HR, and 107 RBI. Edge Holliday

We are looking at MVP candidates as of RIGHT NOW... And one of the things that often is considered is the record of the team...
So here are the teams records RIGHT NOW...
Marlins 13-8 1st place in NL East (no that isn't a typo!)
Mets 11-9 2nd Place in NL East
Arizona 15-6 1st in NL West
Colorado 9-12
San Diego 9-13
Right now Colorado & San Diego are not contending teams... And Holliday's #'s are simular to Atkins'... And we are not talking about last season here we are talking this season...
Wright has the better SLG #'s, OBP #'s & more RBI's and are tied in HR's 15 of Wright's 23 hits are for extra bases (4HR, 10 doubles, 1 triples) & is leading his team in 2B, HR & RBI....and 2nd in hits. While the rest of his team has stuggled early on...Clearly a Top 5 MVP guy.
Ramirez is the Marlins right now! Now hitting 7HR 17RBI 6SB .349avg with a .651SLG and is clearly a Top 5 MVP guy.

You never said it was as of right now or based off stats so far this year so don't say in your third argument it is. Anyways even if using this year using last years stats for players like Wright and Holliday are even right now as a tiebraker is logical.
Wright is pretty even overall with Holliday - here are some numbers.
BA- Holliday .325 better than Wright's .311
HR- Both of them have 4
RBI- Wright's 19 is 6 more than Holliday not big edge
R-Both of them have 13
H- Holliday has 26 to Wrights 23
OBP- Wright wins by .08 points not real worth mentioning
SLG- Wright wins first one by considerble margin
SB- 5 for M.H and 3 for D.W
SB%-1.000 for M.H to .600 for D.W
TB- 47 for D.W to 44 for M.H
GDP-1 for M.H and 3 for D.W
All of those numbers are pretty close except for SLG so using last years numbers as tiebraker is justified especially when you never said right now before your last argument. Anyways also in park adjusted numbers Hollliday gets edge in BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS so Wright benifits form his home park.
Ramirez will be pitched around pretty soon so his numbers will not be convincing at end of year

Report Offensive CommentClemems did it in 86 and Ekkclesly or whatever that closers names is did it in 92
Ellsbury Rocks | 04/23/08, 04:25 PM
Report Offensive Commentyou do know that it is not really meant for the pitcher and he has to basically be un-hittable, which peavy has not been....in general it is meant for a hitter but if one is not deserving of the award then thats when a pitcher can come into play...ill put money down that if they had to choose between a hitter and pitcher that were equal the hitter would win every time.
Uofmrules* BS | 04/23/08, 04:26 PM
Report Offensive CommentI say what Peavy has done to start this year and based on what he did last year it wil keep going on he has been almost unhittable.
Ellsbury Rocks | 04/23/08, 04:28 PM
Report Offensive Commentyes he was amazing last year but did u hear his name even come close to winning the MVP? no, it's bc any year you have a hitter thats doing amazing a pitcher will get overlooked.
Uofmrules* BS | 04/23/08, 04:31 PM
Report Offensive CommentLets look at Clemens 1986 stats were 24-4, 2.48 ERA, and 237 strikouts while Peavy went 19-6, 2.54 ERA, and 239 strikeouts in 30 less IP so he was actually better minus wins.
As for this year he has a 2.00 ERA, a 1.0 WHIP, 29 strikouts in 36 IP, and a 3-0 record which looks pretty dominating
Ellsbury Rocks | 04/23/08, 04:36 PM
Report Offensive CommentLast year he ended in seventh place in the MVP voting avtually in consideration

Report Offensive Commentyea 7th for those great stats....thats bad
Uofmrules* BS | 04/23/08, 04:37 PM
Report Offensive CommentBut he is still a pretty sure bet to dominate and if there is no dominating flat out clear winning hitter he will hve a pretty good shot at it.
Ellsbury Rocks | 04/23/08, 04:38 PM
Report Offensive CommentYeah the playoffs hurt him last year but who knows if he will make it this year with the no clear out NL Wild Card winner in the NL

Report Offensive Commentyea thats my point, the odds of that are so rare...and there are already some guys who have started out good enough so be considered ahead of him.

Report Offensive Commentmaybe, but still a better chance he'll win it then peavy
Uofmrules* BS | 04/23/08, 04:44 PM
Report Offensive CommentStupid comments to start with. A pitcher can win the MVP, and if one has a shot this year, its Peavy.
Gruden crushes poker tables | 04/23/08, 04:51 PM
Report Offensive Commenthaha your an idiot....like i've said it is mainly set up for hitters, so if they have to choose between the 2 the hitter will come out...so if you have a problem with my stupid comments please oh please challenge me.
Uofmrules* BS | 04/23/08, 05:05 PM
Report Offensive CommentI think Wright has a great chance of winning it this year. It's possible for Peavy to acquire such honor, but if anything it will be the CY award instead of the MVP.
