My choice:

Eric Demetric Dickerson - 1984 St Louis Rams

2,105 Yards(NFL RECORD)
5.6 YPC (Led the league amongst starting RBs)
131 YPG (Led the league)
14 TDs (tied for the league lead)
2,244 Yards from Scrimmage/All Purpose yards (Led the league)
All Pro/Pro Bowl Selection

1984 Dan Marino

5084 passing yards - at time Single season record
362 completions - at time Single season record
64.2 completion %
48 TDs - at time Single season record
108.9 passer rating
243 1st downs by passing out of a total of 387... 62.8%
314 yards passing per game
2nd NFL season
Team 14 - 2
NFL MVP
Lost in SB

Dickerson was a beast and a one man army. How impressive was his numbers? His 131 yards per game average beat out the totals of 20 TEAMS. His 2,105 rushing yards were also more then 14 teams. In a 16 game schedule, he posted 100+ in 12 of those game. Going over 200 twice and over 145 7 times. He embarrassed the Chicago Bears strong top rush defense and posted 149 yards and 2 tds.

Though I do agree with you that Dan Marinos 1984 season was impressive, but unfortunately it doesnt even rank among the top 2 QB performances in NFL HISTORY. Peyton Mannings 2004 season as well as Tom Bradys 2007 season has overshadow Marino's performance. Besides his Passing yards record, the other "at time" records have been surpassed NUMEROUS times. Though Tomlinson's 2006 season was impressive, he does not beat Dickerson in any category other then tds. Those short 2-3 yard tds he had that year did not impress me much.

Dickersons 1984 season STILL ranks as the best single season rushing accomplishment today. Marinos 1984 season, not so much.

Marino was a wizard. He broke 6 six NFL season passing records. Granted the TD records were broken but the fact is he broke 6 records in one year. The 313 yards per game lead the league. His 5,084 passing yards were more than ALL NFL teams. In fact his passing yards were more than the COMBINED passing yards of the LA Rams & Indi Colts. So much so that those two teams would have to pass for 835 more yards to match his total. BTW... according thier average passing yards per game it would take them 3 games a piece to come close and still not pass him.

He passed for 400 or more 4 times - a NFL record
2 games in a row with 400 passing yards
9 games with 300 - 2nd in the record books
6 games with 4 or more TDs

63% of miami's 1st downs were his doing. 63%
HE was the MVP that year NOT Dickerson.
So i guess the voters were more impressed with Marino's STATs

Forfeited Turn

We are debating greatest single season achievement.

Well we both gave you two to choose from. Please note that both were from 1984.

Marino was MVP of the league that year.
Dan marino beat dickerson in that voting.
So even the NFL wrritters thought that Marino's was a better season.

Interesting TD. Football is a team game and is it possible that one of these choices had to rely more on his teamates than the other?(as opposed to single-handedly getting off) Hmm....

April 24, 2008  09:37 PM ET

Got to change the Avitor..... sorry Cain

April 24, 2008  10:32 PM ET

i thought about the Rice thing but a in-complete season is tee'd up for a torpedo argument.

April 24, 2008  10:36 PM ET

i didn't want the question of "was it a full season"
even though it would benifit Rice.... but we would never know

Gotta be LaDain for 32 TD's and 1,800+ yards.
And even though he's repugnant, O.J.'s 2,000 in 14 games deserves mention.

monster year for LT

Didn't Dickerson always run out of bounds and never "finish" off his runs...
Can't vote for a guy like that regardless of his #s, it's the NFL man.

Wow AllStarz, voting based on a mans reputation and completely disregarding the td topic. Thanks

RB that gets 2000 plus yards is much bigger than QB getting 5000 yards
