Since Penn State started Big Ten play in 93, they have sunk from a premire CFB program, in the same sense that programs like USC, LSU, Florida, and Ohio State are today, and are now a 2nd rate program. heres why
Since 1993 they have:
had 4 losing seasons, they had 1 the previous 55 years
2 Conference Titles, Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin have more and Nothwestern and Iowa have 2 as well
1 BCS appearance, as many as Hawaii, Purdue, Maryland, Boise State, Oregon State, K-State.
Thier recruitment classes are routinely at the bottom of the top 25 nationally, if at all.
Have only 4 top 10 finishes
6 finishes in the top 3 of the big 10
0 Natl Titles or Title game appearacnes
This level of performance is unbecoming of a a top rate program, they are an enitre level below the top programs today such as OSU, Oklahoma, Florida, USC, LSU, or Texas. They are more on par with programs such as Purdue, Washington, Nebraska, BC, Cal, all good programs but not elite.

I have 2 issues with your statement
1) it is NOT the fault of the Big 10 that dispite poor match skills- Penn State has fallen to a tier 2 school- this is not like some in Miami who claim the ACC is the reason they fell off due to poor competition or Houston looking at the Big 12 for killing thier cash Cow
Ohio State, Michigan and others have done JUST fine with the peice of the pie that the Big 10 gives them
2) Penn State HAD to join a conference and as far as Football is concerned the Big 10 was the best choice- other than ND ALL big time D1 schools had to go to a conference
The ACC was out- their academics were too high at the time
Big 12 was out not even close to the other schools
The SEC was out even further away
The Pac-10 was even FURTHER away
and the Big East at the time would have made a good option- but when the ACC took 3 teams then Penn might have suffered like the 'cuse did.

Im not blaming the big 10, im blaming Penn State or bashing them for joining the Big 10. Im stating the obvious that they have fallen from a prominance to mediocrity since joining the big 10
Ill even argue that Penn States fall all lies on the program itself. They are afraid to force paterno out, and hes killing this team. Hes not the coaching legend he once was anymore. Now hes a selfish, stubborn old man whos lost control of his team and whom you cant understand a word he says anymore. The LEAST the could do is name a successor to Paterno, but they wont even go as far as to do that. Joe MUST go and Penn State, and thier fans need to realize that.
Its been a decade since PSU was even considered to be a Natl Title contender in the preaseason. Going to bowls such as the Alamo, Outback, or Capital One have become the best Penn State can hope for in the past 10 years. This is why they are a second rate program.
But they can get back on top, USC, and Oklahoma did that. They were medicore for a while and now look at them. Penn State can turn its fortunes around

The Past 3 years Penn state has won 11, 9 and 9 games and WON thier BCS game- showing they belonged unlike some of the teams you mentioned and are 3 for 3 last 3 years in bowl game
Penn State was ranked THIRD after the 2005 season
Considering they only have 4 games on the road next year they should be pretty good next year
And you talk about the lack of talent in Penn State
2007 Levi Brown Pick 5
2006 Tamba Hali Pick 20
and Dan Connor can make it 3 years in a row number 1 picks
USC can;t say that
MICHIGAN can;t say that
ANTI-NASCAR said 04/26, 12:31 AM
They cant win thier conference, they go to mediocre bowl games, they cant beat OSU or MICH. Top programs do all of the above whiile Penn ST doesnt. They lose thier big conference games, are good once every 5 years. Top programs win Natl Titles, PSU doesnt. Top programs are fixtures in the BCS, Psnn St has been there once. How can you call this a top caliber program? To call PSU a top program is an insult to Ohio State, USC, LSU, etc.
A throwdowner named NCshvDavid said 04/26, 10:15 PM
There is ONLY one national champ a year- and only about 20 teams have a shot- and Penn State is one of those teams
They beat MIch or Ohio state- since they don;t play every year - and they almost have a bye to the top 3
You can say over the past 3 years PSU has improved a great deal- With the W/L WINNING their Bowl games - and the ORANGE bowl IS a big deal and high draft picks show the respect PSU still has today

Ummmm, don't you invalidate your entire TD when you list A BIG TEN SCHOOL as a premier CFB program?
Not to mention Michigan is also a premier CFB program who is also A BIG TEN SCHOOL.

i may be wrong, but anti-nascar is merely saying that PSU has become a tier -2 CFB program over the last 15 years. The strength/weakness of the Big 10 doesn't matter. I'm with you Anti-nascar. I would actually put them behind OSU, MICH, UW and maybe Iowa in terms of strength of programs since the turn of the century.

Thats exactly what im saying. Theres nothing wrong with the big 10. OSU and MICH are priemer programs, penn state however is not anymore. Its about PSU, not the big 10

Then why didn't you make the TD title "PSU has become a 2nd tier CFB program"
By stickin the Big Ten in the title, it does almost seem that you're drawing a comparison that their presence in the Big Ten has made them a 2nd tier.
And its not like the fall of PSU isn't unexpected...programs rise & fall - some programs just don't fall as far.
