Throwdown teams tourney: Greatest ending to a game.

1982. Cal-Stanford.

Stanford has just taken a 20-19 lead with 4 seconds to play. Radio announcer Joe Starkey summed the situation up succinctly: "It would take a miracle for Cal to win this game".

The place was going nuts and the band started taking the field right after the ensuing kickoff. 5 laterals later and after having to avoid not only Stanfords players but also their band, Starkey had is miracle. After several minutes of arguing by coaches and players and referees huddling to decide what the heck just happened it was ruled a TD and Stanford was penalized for too many men on the field (players AND band)

In what has to be the wildest and one of the most controversial endings to any games ever played, that play has been scrutinized countless times and 26 years later is still the most memorable ending in the history of American sports.

2007 Fiesta Bowl: Boise St-OK

Now I wasn't alive in 82 so I'm afraid I missed "The Play", but the 07 Fiesta Bowl HAS to be the greatest finish in any sport ever. How could anything possibly top that?

Anyways, here's how it went:

Boise St v OK didn't seem like much of a competition to most avid college football enthusists. Oklahoma is a team with a history of being one of the best and had a fantastic squad led by Adrian Peterson, who was set to make his return after a lengthy injury and guide OK to victory. Boise sate played in the weak WAC and weren't given a chance...

However, Boise State led the game until 1:02 left when Marcus Walker intercepted a Boise St pass for a TD, making the score 35-28.

Boise were determined to win, though, and pushed down the field. With :07 seconds on the clock, they succesfully completed a 35 yd "Statue of Liberty" to tie up the game.

In OT OK got the ball and scored first from a 25 yd TD from AP.

Boise State then scored off a nice TE release and decided to go for the 2 pt conversion for the win. Needless to say, if they didn't score Boise St would've been seen as the biggest losers ever, but with a ball fake, Boise St won 43-42.

OK, The '07 Fiesta bowl was nice, but best ending to a game ever? Nah. Just another OT game under the silly College OT rules of starting with the ball at your opponents 25. Sure, going for two was intriguing, but hardly unheard of.

The Play received that nickname because no other trumps it. And that it came on the last play of the game, upsetting Stanford in John Elways last collegiate regular season game, with Stanford needing a win to land a bowl berth, and between those two schools who were intense rivals made it even more special. After Elway did what he would go on to do so many times in his NFL career and seemingly brought his team back from certain defeat and clinch a bowl invite to cap his College career, The Play instead ended John's College career early.

You may not have been alive when it happened, but guarantee you've seen a few times over the years. It ranks right up there with The Catch among most replayed sports moments.

Even more amazingly, Cal only had 10 men on the field. They not only had to pull of the impossible with Stanford having too many players on the field AND fight through their band, but had to do it a man short because of their own confusion.

8-0 already. wow CCC you win again.

Im busy and I dont see myself coming back from an 8 vote deficit so I'm just gunna go and give this one to you...

Honestly I woulda said Cal-Stanford too but for the sake of arguing I just took the FIesta Bowl. Good job.

I seen a TD like this before, it was a lop-sided turn out.

Yeah, the Boise State finish was incredible. Amazing ending. But 20 years from now, it will not stand alone, but be part of the BCS mess. The Play stands alone, 25+ years later. I wasn't alive either when it happened, but that doesn't mean it wasn't the best.

Cal-Stan IS the play.

"Good video to check out all the scoring."

Good video, but this is about the best ending to a game, not the best final few minutes...If it were, nothing could beat Miracle on Ice.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen The Play, or doesn't recall it. ;-)

I've seen both. Boise St was an exciting ending, but Cal-Stanford was just amazing. I mean, everyone thought that game was over, and the complete and utter chaos that ensued as they argued the too many men penalty will (most likely) never happen again. The band was on the field for crying out loud!
