What can I say the stats say it all. 7 Gold medals (he would`ve had 8 if his teammate hadn`t started before early),5 world records and he didn`t just brake them, he shattered them. In a Sport where every 100th of a second can make the difference between winning and losing he knocked more than a full second off 2 world records. He`s going to brake Mark Spitz`s record of 7 Gold Medals in 1 Olympics with ease.

The same could be said for Lance Armstrong. He dominated cycling for years and everyone breathed a sigh of relief when he retired. Name another cyclist. I cant think of any, and he won 7 consecutive Tour de France titles.

Lance Armstrong? You might not know but, he`s RETIRED! We`re talking about current players here.
Maybe I exaggerated. Phelps won`t break Spitz`s record with ease but, c`mon! He has a darn good shot at it. If he does do it hopefully people will finally recgonize him for who he is.

Since when does someone have to be retired to be the most dominant athlete in a sport? You said yourself the most dominant athlete in the world in an individual sport. In that case Tiger Woods totally dominates Golf, Lance dominated cycling, Federer dominates tennis, and the list goes on..

That is not what I said! I said we`re talking about current players and he is retired,so he doesn`t count. Got That? And the reason I said individual sport is because I don`t want comparisons to guys in team sports like football and basketball. I only want to compare guys in individual sports like tennis and swimming. I`ll gladly have a Throwdown about players in team sports, once we`re done here.

No actually, thats not what you said. But whatever.

June 18, 2007  02:27 PM ET

June 18, 2007  02:30 PM ET

June 18, 2007  02:31 PM ET

June 18, 2007  02:33 PM ET

lance armstrong is retired. this is about current athletes.

June 18, 2007  02:34 PM ET

Ya, one name, Tiger. How about another, Sorenstam, and another, Carl Lewis, how about Lance Armstrong . . . the list goes on. Phelps isn't even close to those four.

June 18, 2007  02:34 PM ET

Federer?

June 18, 2007  02:35 PM ET

Well forget about Lance and Carl then, Tiger and Sorenstam are still better.

June 18, 2007  02:59 PM ET

What is the counter argument?

He is unreal... and he eats 10,000 calories a day, thats impressive.

June 18, 2007  05:22 PM ET

I agree with HappyCocks. I think that Tiger, Federer, and Sanderson are better.

June 18, 2007  07:30 PM ET

Federer seems pretty dominant.

June 18, 2007  10:04 PM ET
