As the NFL draft winds to a close, I start a TD that was supposed to be finished. As for the question, I am going to say NO.
On average, the NFL draft lasts over 14 hours. It takes about 30 seconds for each team to make their decision. So approximately 2 hours of this mind-numbingly dull event is meaningless projections that are almost sure to be wrong.
So why do people watch the NFL draft? I tune in when my favorite team, the Bears are picking, and even then, I don't watch that after the first day. With technology now, you can look at the draft picks online, or have ESPN or a friend text you the picks of either your favorite team, or every team. So what could you be doing in this time?
hanging out with friends, partying, working overtime, working out, watching entertaining TV, practicing football so you can enter the Draft next year, watching the NBA playoffs, watching the NHL playoffs (welll, maybe not that) watching baseball
Hell, anything is more entertaining then the NFL draft, and you'd be better off just about anywhere but your couch, drooling mindlessly with a beer in hand, listening to Mel Kiper Jr. droll on about prospects who will likely never play a down in theNFL

This really depends on one's level of fanhood, Nomarfan... while I myself watched not a minute of draft coverage, it can be beneficial for these reasons:
1. People are losing their mind for ANYTHING football this time of year. The draft is their best shot at getting NFL action for months...
2. For those fanatics who NEED football to sustain them through the day, the draft offers ample analysis from every conceivable angle... especially because they have plenty of time to do so...
3. Many people don't WANT to leave their couch on a Sunday. The draft helps fanatics keep their couch spot in shape for the REAL football season, when I am sure even YOU will be, "drooling mindlessly with a beer in hand"...
4. The internet has spawned mock drafts, fantasy football, and other statistical analyses for fans. Watching the draft coverage gives a fanatic the best possible opportunity for success in these pursuits.
For the casual sports fan, the draft can appear nothing more than a lot of bluster. But there can be drama... from guys like Brohm and Quinn and Rodgers sliding down the draft, to Eli refusing San Diego, to Leaf/Manning debates, the draft offers football fans something to digest.

I do agree, but for one to waste all that time watching the draft, their fanhood level must be that of an owner or GM.
1.Pretty much every reason you stated used the term "fanatic." Now I know that fan is short for this, but most sports fan's don't consider themselves fanatics. I personally, along with many others, am sick of NFL 24/7, and am content with baseball and basketball right now.
2. True, many people sit on their couches all Sunday, but who really wants to wathc rounds 3-7, where the chances for finding a star are slim, and the biggest argument is who will be more of a bust, Zbikowski or Booty. Most of the action and "Drama" you claim exists occurs Saturday, where oppurtunities for actual fun are boundless.
3. also disagree with your statement that draft coverage on TV is the best. Draft coverage sucks almost anywhere, but TV is probably the worst. The difference? If you disagree with one blogger or website, you go to a new one. If you disagree with Kiper, than too damn bad, cuz your watching him ALL....DAY....LONG....
Bigalke said 04/27, 08:49 PM
Recognize that this throwdown did not say, "Is the ENTIRE NFL draft worth watching?" By your own admission, the draft is worth watching when your favorite team is up to the podium... so you already concede that there is some value in televised coverage of the draft.
The reason I used the term "fanatic" is because it is used to denote those ardent, hardcore NFL fans from the casual sports fan. To these fanatics, the Draft is the kickoff to start speculation about the new NFL season. From giving new variables to fantasy-league games, to new hope for struggling franchises, there is something in the draft to captivate every football fan's attention...
The caveat here, Nomarfan, is that we aren't talking about people wasting a full 60 hours watching the draft. I agree that such overload is usually reserved for owners/GMs...
But blindly asserting that the NFL Draft offers NOTHING worth watching is a power statement to make; one which, by your own admission in the first argument, is patently false. Whether a fan wishes to tune in to see just the first round, or bunkers down for the entirety of the coverage, the NFL Draft can offer entertaining viewing for ALL levels of football fan...

Come on BigAlke, we gotta meet halfway here. It says watch, not glance, or pass by. That would imply that someone is devoting a good deal of time to watch the NFL Draft, not just their favorite team's draft.
And yes, fanatics will watch the draft, but is it worth it to devote your time to being a sports fanatic? Just because people do something does NOT mean it is worth it, and fanatics of all kinds waste their life on an area of expertise.
I never stated that the NFL Draft offers nothing worth watching, but rather that there are other things that are a better use of your time, and you could still stay informed on the goings on of the draft. I knew every pick the second they happened, yet didn't even turn on the TV. You don't need a TV to experience the drama of a draft. Get a social life for god's sake, and have some fun. The draft doesn't have to be something you make sacrifices to watch, it can be something going on, that, while you can remain aware of it, need not watch it in its entirety, or even very much of it at all. Its like the news. Is all of the news worth watching? Do i wanna hear about a cat who dialed 911, or where Josh Morgan was drafted, maybe, but probably not.
Bigalke said 04/28, 06:55 PM
Okay, Nomarfan, you want middle ground... but then you try to argue not that the draft is NOT worth watching but there are things more worthwhile to be doing. This is inevitable... it would be better to plant a tree or volunteer in the community than watch the draft. But, for those seeking passive entertainment (i.e. something where they don't have to do anything to be entertained) the Draft offers such an avenue.
There are other means by which people can hear about draft picks -- text-message services, the internet, the radio. But none of these can give the type of in-depth analysis all in one place as well as television can. Statistical junkies can get their numbers while simultaneously keeping up with future pick projections, trade news, etc. Casual fans can still glean more knowledge from television than they would blindly searching around the internet. Football fanatics can satiate their spring craving to start getting hope for the upcoming season...
Whether one tunes in merely for the opening round, the entire draft or only their favorite team's picks, the Draft is worth watching from a news and an entertainment level...

Some people would argue that burying one's face in FanNation all day isn't worth doing as well... this, in the end, is subjective and subject to the whims of the individual sports fan...

I'd say it's more worth watching than having to see all the TD's created on it's outcome etc. on Fannation.

"Is the NFL Draft worth watching?"
Depends on what you consider worthwhile. I'd rather watch the entire NFL draft than 10 minutes of a NASCAR race, for example.
