this is, in my opinion the mavericks deal for jason kidd....dumb

Not a fan of the pick only but it was the Phoenix Suns getting Shaq.

Don't vote based on the picks please.

Good luck hokie

ok i respect that pick, seeing how their series is going, but they are not particularly getting exploited at the position they lost or the position shaq plays.

the mavs are being exploited at the heart of their trade. face it, kidd cannot keep up with paul and keep him in front. paul tore it up the first two games and the mavs finally had to switch and put jason terry on paul. kidd has been an horrible disappointment. if the mavericks still had harris they would have a better defender against paul

ok so yeah jkidd has been on the all nba defensive team 9 times, but welcome back to the new western conference kidd. this isnt the east anymore.

Not only did I pick the Shaq trade because of how the Suns' series is going against the Spurs, but for how they performed during the regular season as well.

The Suns game has been all about the run-n-gun style of offense for the past several years. Shaq is quite possibly the worst person to have in that kind of offensive attack. He just isn't capable of running up and down the court as fast as they would need him to, so they had to change their offensive style mid-season. Never good for a team that has a title chance.

Nash is the type of point guard that like to penetrate into the lane and kick it out to someone else. With Shaq in there clogging the lane, that's pretty hard to do. Nash said himself that it was harder to play his game when Shaq was in the lane with the defenders that accompany him.

The Suns also lost Shawn Marion. They may have improved slightly in the rebounding stats, but they depreciated greatly in perimiter defense. In the West, which is dominated by slashing point guards, perimiter defense is key. You mentioned yourself that the Mavs were having this problem. So are the Suns with Tony Parker. Marion would typically cover him Parker and do it well.

another big thing here is how much depth the mavs gave away for kidd....seven players??!?!?! are you serious? they sold away their whole future of the franchise on a risk of winning now

what was wrong with devin harris? he's only a few years into the league with loads of potential. you just said the west is for slashing point guards...harris slashes, kidd....not so much.

harris was also proven to be an excellent defender, running tony parker almost to death in the playoffs two years ago. one question, when does this stop? the mavs give away great point guard after great point guard. they got rid of kidd before his prime, let nash slip through their fingers in free agency, and now got rid of harris? maybe he will hit his prime in jersey as well and in 8 years the mavs might want him back.

you bring up the suns losing more in the regular season.
record before shaq : 37-15 (winning percentage of 71%)
record after shaq : 18-12 (winning percentage of 60%)
ok so yeah they dropped off by 11% but....
mavericks
record before kidd : 35-18 (winning percentage of 66%)
record after kidd : 16-13 (winning percentage of 55%)
so in all reality they both saw the same drop off

"so in all reality they both saw the same drop off " No, the Suns got a much worse deal then the Mavs did. What was the main reason that the Suns acquired Shaq? To defend Tim Duncan and the other big men in the West. He has been unable to do that effectively. He was supposed to be the perfect compliment to Nash and bring the Suns a championship. He has failed in both aspects.

The Suns run and gun offense was based on Nash having the ball and Marion was usually the guy that would receive the pass. So not only did they lose a key perimeter defender, but they also lost a guy that produced a large number of their fast break points.

Back to Nash's play. He loves to drive into the lane and dish the ball to teammates. With Shaq in there taking up space and having defenders draped over him, that makes this task much harder to accomplish. Nash is now running into huge seven footers, whereas with Marion, the big guys would all be outside defending him.

By inputing Shaq into the Suns offense, they have ultimately destroyed themselves. They don't have Marion on the fast break or on the perimeter. The Suns have effectively ruined themselves for a couple years to come.

Ram: I agree. Jerry West should be drawn and quartered for that one but Heisley still signed off on it.

I don't feel either were a mistake. Both the Mavs and Suns are playing teams that would have beat them regardless. The Suns have been the same for like 4 years now, they haven't imporved, primarily due to their style of offense and lack of defense. The Mavs have sped up their offense, but once again lack in D. And to say that these were bad trades is foolish, they both traded for hall of famers. And to me both Nash and Dirk, the 2 "mvps" do not make their teams better like mvps should, because they are/were never mvp caliber to begin with, is part of the reasons for their problems.

Why are people are always talking about run and gun offense and how Shaq messes that up or Kidd is too slowt o play D. On normal fast breaks you only have 2-3 people out anyways, so why is it that your 5th guy(Shaq) is needed to fast break too? Secondly, its not as if the Suns have now stopped running and/or are incapable because Shaq is there. Bad esxcuse. How about we blame Nash for giving up 41 to Mr.Longoria and Dirk for nearly getting pimp slapped by D.West.

The Shaq deal only looks bad this year. It's going to take him an off season and some of next year for him to gel with Nash and Stoudamire. The Kidd deal looks bad so for the purpose of this TD, I vote left.

However, the worse deal was the Gasol deal. I'm a Laker fan so it benefits me but the Grizzlies GM was an idiot for taking so little for him.

Yeah but the thing is that Shaq doesn't have one or more good years left.
