I think Rudy Gay deserved it more...
Rudy Gay's stats (2006-07 stats on the left & 2007-08 stats on the right)
10.8 PPG 20.1
4.5 RPG 6.2
1.3 APG 2.0
.9 SPG 1.4
.9 BPG 1.0
1.79 Turnovers 2.35
Hedo Turkoglu stats (2006-07 stats on the left & 2007-08 stats on the right)
13.3 PPG 19.5
4.0 RPG 5.7
3.2 APG 5.0
1.0 SPG .9
.2 BPG .3 BPG
1.96 Turnovers 3.0
Rudy Gay increased his stats in every major category. He was at 10.8 PPG and nearly doubled it to 20.1 Hedo Turkoglu on the other hand was 13.3 PPG from last season and 19.5 PPG today. Hedo Turkoglu's really only advantage is assists but when you think about it, who does Rudy Gay really have the opportunity to pass to, this is a team that went into rebuilding mode mid season when they traded Gasol (look how he helped the Lakers).

Hedo Turkoglu deserved the Most Improved player award and he won it becuase so.
Although Rudy Gay's stats increased more this year than Hedo's did it also has to do with the amount of playing time both received. Rudy Gay had considerably less stats last year because he wasn't playing as much
Hedo won the award because of the way he held his team to the playoffs with Howard, he was very deserving of an all-star selection, and even had a couple of huge game-winning shots for the Magic. Hedo is the Most Improved player and he deserves to be most improved player.

Their minutes are comparable. 37 minutes versus 36.9. Hedo Turkoglu had a 5.8 minute increase while Rudy had a 10 minute increase. But the fact that Hedo Turkoglu greatly increased his turnover rate while Rudy barely increased does not help Turkoglu's case. All of a sudden, Rudy Gay is becoming the future of the team and he has no one to rely on and he has no trouble doing becoming a franchise star. Rudy showed that the Grizzlies drafted right by drafting Rudy Gay (and showed why many of the other teams should have drafted him earlier). He is one of the NBA's best G/F's while he only just finished his sophomore season.

I wanted something to argue against but I am left with nothing this turn so I will add more to what I already said.
Rudy Gay started with less. When he was a rookie he scored 10.8 PPG. This season as a sophomore, he has become an elite G/F by averaging 20.1 PPG. Compare that to Hedo Turkoglu who a year ago averaged 13.3 PPG and this season he averaged 19.5 PPG.
This means Rudy Gay averaged 2.5 PPG LESS than Hedo Turkoglu. However, he scored .6 PPG MORE than Hedo Turkoglu this year. His 20.1 scoring average is an improvement of 9.3 PPG (from 10.8). Hedo Turkoglu was at 13.3 PPG and only improved by scoring 6.2 PPG more this season.
Summary of this...
*Rudy Gay IMPROVED by 9.3 PPG while Hedo Turkoglu IMPROVED by only 6.2 PPG.
*Rudy Gay was only in his rookie season and already he is a better scorer that Hedo Turkoglu.
OK, now Rudy Gay just lost Pau Gasol. Now if you look at the LA LAkers, you can see the difference he makes (they just swept the Nuggets). Hedo on the other hand increased his turnover rate from 1.96 to 3, that is a 1.04 increase in turnovers. Rudy Gay on the other hand barely increased his turnover rate which was originally 1.79 and now is 2.35.

Turkoglu also score more while having Howard. On a team with no other scorers, since gasol got traded, Gay got more opportunities to score, and did so

I think it's a rather large toss up. Turkoglu was certainly deserving as was Gay. I know that ORL has a filry stacked team and Hedo had help, but that shouldn't immediately discount him for it.
I'll wait until later to make my vote. Leaning left, but it could go either way...

Turkoglu is the obvious choice. The Magic was going to him late in games and he produced. Dwight Howard had a monster season but Hedo proved to be a great compliment to him.
