You can argue that glenn dorsey or branden albert were good steals, but it really only took 2 teams to pass on them for the chiefs to get both of them...Todd mcshay of espn had mendenhall ranked 8th on his big board and dropped to pittsburgh at the 23 spot...not only did he get passed up by the panthers for johnathan stewart, but the lions, bears, cardinals, and cowboys also passed on him...no one expected RM to drop to the steelers and he was the biggest steal in the first round.

Dont get me wrong here, I Know Mendenhall's worth....Im an Illini fan myself, while i only see one team that passed him up that needed a RB...and thats Arizona...and your probably like WHAT? They have Edgerin..yes they do but he is a 9 year vet who has NO back up what so ever...ther next in line for Zona RB's is Marcel Shipp a man who has 20 some touches for 40 some yds...So other than that teams needs going to a CB..which i dont know why? many other teams had a need for OT, DE DT or MLB....this has been probably the draft with the most OT/DT and Linemen drafted in the first round....saying this your probably like what dos this have to do with RM? Well when a team doesn't have a great need for one position than another its silly, in my eyes, to go for that position that hold lesser need....and this is what happen with RM, its not that people didn't want him, its that people didn't need him...
RM is a 1 year starting running back that was a up the middle hitting runner, not really a pass blocker or drop out from the box and catch the ball RB...something you look at as well as the running aspect of a RB...he had only 1 FULL season of running the ball in Illinois and yes did very well

Even if you say that all the teams in the teens that passed him had a greater need, that doesn't diminish the skills or value of RM...you could say that your making my point clearer because you even said that even though they passed on him, he was still the best possible player available, just not for those teams...I also disagree with you that a team shouldnt go for a player who fills a lesser need than someone else who would fill a greater need...You can look at the steelers and the falcons for example in this years draft...the steelers could have gone for an OT like Duane Brown or a DE like Kentwan Balmer that would have filled a bigger need than RM filled, but the Steerlers chose the best player available...on the other hand, the falcons traded up because they felt that Sam Baker was the last legitimate left tackle but they got criticized for filling their largest need because he was a reach at #21...You have to assess the talent available when picking for need. Who do you think was the biggest steal of this draft?

I couldn't disagree more
your right it being passed up in the draft doesn't diminish your skills, but its doesnt mean that your a steal when a team doesnt have a need for you or your position to be filled. Its a steal when other playes go before you when the need is there and you are a higher rated prospect
Second RM wasn't the best player left in the draft when he was picked up...he has had ONE season of full time running, behind a spread offense...which in case you havent seen, the NFL doesnt have that in any of the teams play books
3rd.. take the best player available for the position you need to fill...not the best player for a position not needing to be filled...that is my way of seeing how drafts should be done...not what the actual teams did
4th Best steal of the First round was Mike Jenkins out fo S. Florida, there were 2 other CB taken higher than this guy and he, IMO is a stud. Kick return saftey and CB are all skills he honed in College. he averaged 30+ yds on kick returns, and a 100 yds kick off return for a td.
He recorded 133 tackles 7 Ints, and 41 pass break ups...he was the top CB prospect for the draft and dallas got away with taking him at the 25 pic

I couldn't disagree with you more
You mention that RM ran out of a spread offense and he was only a one year starter and scouts and teams took that into consideration but also noticed the talent that RM had that would transfer well to the nfl. Who cares about what the biggest need is in the first round...obviously if there is a talented player that fits a need, a team is going to take him, but in the first round, many teams look to add a player that is going to help win them games, whether that fits their biggest need or not...do you think rb was the biggest need when reggie bush was taken by the saints...do you think the raiders really needed a rb when they took DMAC this year? No, but those guys were special and so they took them so that they could help win games. Also, you can fill your larger needs in the later rounds or in free agency where you can find role players to fill your needs. The first round is about finding a guy who will help win you football games, and possibly add another dimension to your football team. You mentioned the 4th best steal of the first round but what was your number 1 steal in the 1st round, who cares about the fourth.
Steveo16220 is a GGTK said 05/01, 02:06 AM
Of the examples you gave me with Reggie bush and so forth...how has that turned out for them? The Saints still have Deuce McAllister running the ball, Reggie has had NO impact on the position...and they still lack a good TE that they could have drafted...or the Raiders have 4 running backs now with 3 of them last year having 75 + touches...how is a 4th man going to help that?
Thats what happens when you draft for best player and not need
You say you can fill your larger needs in latter rounds....if that was the case then why would you WAIT to fill a BIGGER need with a statistically lower caliber player? when there are better ones in the earlier rounds? That just sounds ridiculous...why would you do that?
That WASN'T my 4th best steal of the 1st round....hahaha.. i was numbering my arguments...you didn't catch on to that?
Mendenhall, great college back who had a great season of play...i do not think that it was obsured for him to drop that far down, in fact i even thought he would be second round with all the Tackles and linemen that were being drafted...good RB but a steal? nah...NOW the #! prospected CB going 25 after 2 other CB's... steal!

No votes for Harvey at 8?
Okay seriously though I think the biggest steal of this draft was Dorsey. He was at the top of a lot of analysts' and teams' draft boards and for him to fall to 5 is a big steal. A lot of people believe he could be a truly great player - a top defensive lineman in the league. Until people and teams start respecting the RB again, and stop going with the idea that we can put any guy behind a great line and get similar production, I am going to have to choose Dorsey.
