Pete Rose should be in Cooperstown, regardless of his ban from major league baseball?

I think that Pet Rose should be in the Hall Of Fame no matter what! Not only is Charlie Hustle the Games best ever singles hitter(Hitter),he was also one of the games most influential players ever! He was a charismatic charmer that had his way with the media, with his quick 1 liners and knowledge of the game. He was also the most maketable player of his time( Nestle crunch and gold star chili, mizuno). then there are the many records that he still holds 2 decades (also known as the steraroid era!!!) after his RETIREMENT?! Now understand i am in no way saying i think Pete Roses' bannishment from baseball should be lifted, he bet on baseball games as an acting manager of a professional team and should never be allowed to have that chance again. But i am saying Pete Rose should be allowed to at least be granted a one day pardon that would allow him(if the voting committee were to concur) to be enshrinned into Cooperstown for his Awsome accomplishments as the best proffesional player of his generation and questionably all time. I agree that Pete Rose the person is a piece of poop for the most part, but he's 4 sure no worse than the roiders that will get into the hall!! 14

The Baseball Hall Of Fame isn't just about numbers ... It's about character. The fans look up to these players who are enshrined as roll models. Would any parent want there kids to look up to a man like Pete Rose ... No. Pete Rose is and will always be a gambler. He bet on baseball. He bet on and against the teams he played on and managed. Which is aganst the rules. And got him banned for life.

Look at Black Sox Scandel none of the 8 were ever convicted in a court of law yet they were banned for life. There is lots of proof that Shoeless Joe Jackson and Buck Weaver from the Black Sox were not involved in "The Fix" during the 1919 World Series but because they knew about it and didn't report it they were banned. And that ban has stayed into effect.
Look at Mark McGwire he has Hall Of Fame stats (583 HRs) but because of all the supected involvement with steroids and performance enhancing drugs he has only received approx 25% of the vote in his first 2 years of eligibility. Yet he never admitted to taking steroids or failed a test nor was named in the Mitchell Report. But his character is in question.

Pete Rose all time hits king Yes ... Hall of Famer NO

You think he should still he banned but put into the HOF? That seems to be contradictory.

April 30, 2008  11:54 AM ET

not sure how you could think so, but yes i believe he should still be banned in the compacity that he is now with the exception of a one day only commishioned basis soley to be inducted into the hall of fame IF the committee would vote him in WHEW but im sure i stated this in principal in my opening arguements.

Pete violated the biggest rule in baseball....a rule that every team has a BIG FREAKIN SIGN about in their clubhouse....NO BETTING ON BASEBALL.

there are worse characters in the HOF (Ty Cobb) but none of them broke the cardinal rule of baseball and then denied it. If Rose had owned up to it way back when, he would have been suspended for a couple of years but not for life and would be in the HOF today.....because he denied it that's the only reason he got the lifetime ban.

The man is an idiot - that is the biggest reason he ain't in.

now way

April 30, 2008  01:46 PM ET

guys who play there hearts out for years upon years that just don't quite have the numbers don't even get a shot at coopers town, yet you want someone who broke a golden rule to get a chance? please

April 30, 2008  01:52 PM ET

I wanted to take this, and I could have presented an argument against. But truthfully, I believe he should be in the Hall of Fame, and I couldn't bring myself to argue otherwise.

April 30, 2008  02:01 PM ET

Should he be in for what he did on the field - YES....problem is, unlike the Football HOF the baseball HOF actually takes off the field morality into the voting.

April 30, 2008  02:05 PM ET

no HoF for that clown....ever

April 30, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Morality...I don't think you can walk too far down that road with falling in a pothole or two.

Cap Anson and Ty Cobb were raging bigots. Mantle and Ruth were inveterate drunks. Not to mention drug use, philandering, criminal activity...The Hall is rife with flaws of character and morailty. What's keeping guys like Rose out is that someone somewhere decided that gambing was a less forgivable sin than others. That kind of arbitrary judgment doesn't work for me.

If someone could prove that Rose ever bet against his team, threw a game, or otherwise did something on the field to further his gambling success, than I'd agree he should never get in. But betting on games in and of itself, while disgusting and tremendously stupid, does not outweigh the positive impact he made on the game and the record books.

If you're going to punish, you have to punish all sins. Not pick and choose.

April 30, 2008  02:19 PM ET

He admitted to betting on his own team but with as much lying as he's done, can you truly believe him that he didn't bet against his teams?

April 30, 2008  02:20 PM ET

it wasn't illegal in baseball to be an ****hole....or to be a drunk...however it is in the rule book that you cannot bet on the sport...

the thing about Rose that gets me is, if you bet on the game...why lie about it for so long? and then after FINALLY coming clean about it, you want people to believe you that you never bet for your team to lose...of course no one will believe you if you lied about the entire subject for so long...if he lied about not betting what makes you think he is telling the truth about not betting against his team?

April 30, 2008  02:20 PM ET

Problem with Rose Porkins he violated a WRITTEN RULE and THE written rule at that....yup, Anson and Cobb were bigots but it wasn't against baseball or even against the law back then. Being drunk wasn't illegal either.

April 30, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Look at what's been going on in baseball today.......makes the Rose thing a little weak. What's going to happen to Bonds, Clemens and the rest of them?

April 30, 2008  02:24 PM ET

should Jordan be allowed in the NBA hof? he did the same thing rose did, morality that one?

April 30, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Jordan never got busted for betting on basketball.....that's the kicker....gambling is fine as long as it's not on your own sport.

April 30, 2008  02:27 PM ET

the personnel in the Mitchell report are getting off Scott free...at least from the MLBs part...

April 30, 2008  02:28 PM ET

jordan wasnt forced to retire that first round for betting on baseball

April 30, 2008  02:36 PM ET

I agree- but then your morality argument goes out the window.

And what about guys who have violated drug policies. Or curfews. Or clauses in their contracts. Are you prepared to say there are no rule-breakers in the HOF?

I'm not saying Rose doesn't deserve to be sh it on, but a lot of others do as well- and yet some of them still made the Hall.

April 30, 2008  02:38 PM ET

players know bet on baseball and you are banned for life

the players are then free to choose to do it or not they are not however free to choose the consequence the punishment is already established when the choice is made
