The Prodigy is Hawaiian for #1 said 05/07, 10:08 AM
As much as I would love to say a Penguin should win this, I simply can't. 11 goals and 14 points in the playoffs ain't a bad resume to bring in, but if you add the fact that he put in three game winning shots, it's a lock. Unless something crazy happens and he can't get his team past Dallas (anything is possible but cmon) he will win it.
He might just be the best player, on the best team in the West (which is supposed to be better then the east)

If I'd have to give out the Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL Stanley Cup MVP) right now the guy I would give it to is...
Marc-Andre Fleury Goalie from the Pittsburgh Penguins
Look at his Playoff Stats thus far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs...
8-1 1.76 Goals Against Avg 2 Shutouts .938 Save Percentage and has only given up 16 goals in the 9 games that Pittsburgh has played so far.

You are correct sir, the stats while seemingly conviencing are a little inflated. First they faced Ottawa, a team ravaged with injuries, that kinda pretty much rolled over in the playoffs. Don't have to make too many plays when the other team isn't getting oppurtunities to score.
I would say this series more then the one against the Sens, shows Fluery's maturation in goal, however while Fluery is good, he is not the best player on that team, and it wasn't him scoring in bunches to lead his team. When I think MVP I think who could you take off a team and that team fairs worse. To me the Pens could have won both those series without Fluery, they may have given up a goal or two more, but it's the offense that powers that team. I love Fluery, and his play this year has been otustanding, however Malkin has a better case for playoff MVP then Fluery.

The Sens were in the Finals last year and were/are a very good playoff team. And the Rangers haded the Penguins there only loss thus far in the Playoffs
Lets look at who has scored for Pittsburgh thus far in the playoffs...
Malkin has 6 goals
Hossa has 5 goals
Sykora has 4 goals
Crosby has 2 goals
The scoring has been very balanced for the Pens with no one blowing it away in the playoffs.
Fleury has been the difference thus far in the playoffs for Pittsburgh.
Also here's an interesting stat on what position player is more valuable in the playoffs...
In the last 10 Stanley Cup playoffs a Goalie has won the Playoff MVP award 4 times.
The Prodigy is Hawaiian for #1 said 05/07, 12:14 PM
Hossa you can discount cause he racked up all those on the Sens. Which while yes were a playoff team last season, they weren't in any shape to even compete in the playoffs this year.
Fluery has been outstanding there is no doubt, but if a goalie was gonna win it wouldn't be him. Osgood while he didn't start every game, has been redonkulus in goal. His 1.52 against is the best in the playoffs right now, or how bout Turco his play against he Sharks was unreal.
Finally to your point about which posistion is more important, if a goalie won the MVP award 4 times out of the last 10, then 6 other posistions have won, including 3 centers and 3 defensemsen.
Foosball said 05/07, 12:38 PM
The Pens only scored 16 goals in their 4 game sweep of the Senators & 15 goals in their 4 wins aganst the Rangers (the game that they lost they were shut out 3-0)...So your agruement about racking it up aganist the Sens doesn't hold much weight.
Also your pick for the winner for the Conn Smythe was Johan Franzen, yet you haven't agrued for him at all during this TD except your opening arguement...then you starting agruing for Malkin then Osgood and thenTurco.
Also yes 6 others have won the Playoff MVP in the last 10 times..her is the breakdown.
4 goalies
3 centers
3 defensmen
0 right wingers
0 left wingers
So that proves that the most valuable position in the NHL playoffs is the Goalie and so far Marc-Andre Fleury from Pittsburgh has been the best and has lead his team to the Eastern Conference Final.

If for nothing else, I rode Fleury hard down the stretch in my fantasy league and he was the difference maker for me.

This is such a hard Td because in reality...Neither the Wings or the Pens have played any team that is that good. The Pens had it easy in the first round and the Wings in the 2nd with an injury riddled Aves team.
Both now will have to show what they are really made of...I have been so impressed with Dallas and the Flyers...I'd go out on a limb and say Turco or Briere.
But of the above 2...I'm going with right. Partly due to the fact that the Stars have a big shot at another upset. Detroit has the weakest goaltending they have gotten so far. The Pens and Flyer is going to be one heck of a series.
