I know that some may think that Nascar is not a sport beacuse all they do is sit in a car and drive around a track. But what defines the word sport, well a sport is an activity in which a strength is played out in terms of competition. In nascar, or any auto racing, the mental strength of driving at 200 mph bumper to bumper for 500 miles takes a toll on you. Imagine driving on the freeway with massive volume and their all travelling at 200mph. I bet you couldn't do it

"sport is an activity in which a strength is played out in terms of competition."
--So you're saying because mental strength can be a sport if its in competition, than Law School is a sport?

I'm in my first year of Law School. It's finals week right now (i am in desperate need of a break hence this TD)....Law School is 3 years worth of gruelling competiton of mental strength and stamina to be tops of the class. Does it make Law School a sport? NO WAY!

On the drive home from work everyday, I try to take shortcuts and back roads (often exceeding the speed limit). Its agongizingly tough and mentally frustrating...is it a sport? NO WAY!

If the only way you recognize things is whether or not you can do it, then almost everything would be a sport. Sewing, singing, playing the flute (etc..) would be sports

The car in nascar does the majority of the work. The driver steers it and the pitcrew modify it. So is the car the athlete?

The nascar drivers rely on the automobile and the talents of their pit crews to win the race.

It is dangerous and mentally tough and your life is on the line, (and i sure wouldn't want to do it), but that doesn't mean its a sport

Forfeited Turn

glad to see you had time to vote but didnt have time to make your second argument.

There's not much left to say i guess....The definition of sport is way too general and all encompassing. Everything you do is a sport based on the definition, and I think there needs to be a more specific definition. Maybe call some professional sports (baseball, basketball, hockey, football, soccer, etc.) call others leisure sports (golf, fishing, etc.), call others racing events (nascar, F1, horse racing), and finally call the rest no skill events (poker, spelling bees)........i dunno just a start.

as i was saying before. The car is the true athlete and the driver isnt anything. If you do the activity on a date it shouldnt be considered a sport. I drive my girlfriend places to go, therefore driving isnt a sport

First of all you obviously don't have any idea how the SPORT of nascar works. Yes the driving force comes from the car. But the building of the car, the testing, the qualifying and all of the stuff that happens before the actual race is all in the spirit of sport. If the car is the true athlete that why can't anyone be a dominant driver in the sport like a Jeff Gordon, Jimme Johnson or Dale Earnhardt Jr.

I do have a great idea how it works....it works the same was as me driving to work when i'm late. I go as fast as i can. Except when I go to work, I don't just drive in circles making left turns. I also don't have a pit crew helping me make sure my car is working properly. I also have cops to look out for. My car doesn't go 200 miles an hour...but otherwise its the same concept. The gas pedal and brake pedal are in the same location.

I'm not sure what your dominate driver argument is about. No one is dominating Nascar now, there seems to be a wide spread of "talent" (aka the cars). Now that they've added the restrictor plates, the competiton is even closer. It's not about the driver...it's all about the car.

No way is this on the same level as baseball, football, hockey, soccer, or basketball....

i know i'll get smoked by the nascar fans....but according to his definition, nascar shouldnt be a sport unless you consider it on the same level as school and playing the flute

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Some of the physical sports include association football, basketball, water polo, and baseball.

duqu still makes a valid and better argument

NASCAR is a sport. You don't like it, but that doesn't matter. I dont' like Golf, Tennis, Baseball, and non-World Cup Soccor, but they are still sports.

May 8, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Its a sport. Lets stop these TDs. Its over done. If you don't like it fine but its still a sport. I can't stand it but the drivers have great skill and need more concentration than most other sports depend on. Most other sports your concentration only has to last a 10 seconds if that, in NASCAR you have to be totally aware of everything the whole time your car is running. Football you get a 30 second breaks between 5 second plays, baseball you can doze off when you team is batting and in the field the ball is rarely in play.

not a sport

May 8, 2008  11:21 AM ET

anyone actually reading the args besides prodigy?

May 8, 2008  11:36 AM ET

I did. And I agree that law school is a sport.

You get "drafted"
You "compete" for rank
You "perform" for judges
You get "scores"

What more do you want?

May 8, 2008  11:44 AM ET

If you have a flock of admirers and half naked women wanting to see you drive 200mph,...thats a sport! the audience is what makes anything a real functioning sport, its entertainment and it revolves around competion..so its a sport.. i'm sure duguesne has a couple of fans cheering him on thru his law school journey..but not half naked women or beer bellied men.. that i'm sure of...

screw it, if its on ESPN, then its a sport,..ex. the national spelling bee,(those kids are crazy smart!), and the cup thingy, idk but it looks hard!..lol.

May 8, 2008  11:45 AM ET

so poker, the spelling bee etc are sports?

May 8, 2008  11:52 AM ET

What we have from the definition is that Chess, Go, and Scrabble are all sports. Maybe we should have some Scrabble TD's on fannation. Not.

May 8, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I think NASCAR is a sport, but I don't think the drivers are athletes. Further, I think NASCAR is separated from other sport categories because it is a "motor" sport. That differentiates it from football, baseball, basketball, etc. I'm leaning left, but the argument is going to have to be a little stronger. Will wait for further argument.

May 8, 2008  12:42 PM ET

people define sport in their own different ways. This is too subjective to really pick a clear winner. If you're competing in law school and use strenthg to go about that, then yeah it is sport in the true definition. We live in the 21 century though, where people dont often think outside the box and everything has to black and white to make sense...in other words we arent very creative as a whole anymore. Getting people to think any activity other than that which uses a ball is a sport is almost impossible because they are trained to think otherwise. For most people, it's a struggle to think outside of what society has presented to them as the norm. It's sad, but true. Most people believe and always will no matter what Webster's tells them, that to be a sport it must involve running, jumping, and some soft of stick and/or ball...

May 8, 2008  12:55 PM ET

The last TD I saw on this, someone was trying to argue the fact that NASCAR wasn't a sport, but IndyCar was.. it was pretty bad. Some people think it is, some don't... whatever. If you don't like it, don't watch it... just ignore it. I don't like curling, but you don't see me making a huge stink about how curling isn't a sport (which it is, of course).

May 8, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Anything done in a competitive nature for entertainment is a sport. So yes NASCAR, competitive eating, poker, bowling golf and non-world cup soccer are all sports. They may be bad sport and either not fun to watch or just stupid in their conception but they are a sport. In essence anything could be a sport.

But you are completely diluting the term that way. When someone says "I play sports" the colloquial nature of the term lends itself to more meaning than simply "anything at all that can be construed as competitive in any way." The connotation is that the person engages in athletic competition and doesn't just play tiddlywinks, Halo 3, or weave baskets.

I'm voting right because I've had it with seeing this throwdown in it's many forms every single damn day on here.

Guess what....somebody claimed that before you...and then somebody else, then another, and another, and another, and another, and another.
