The worst thing people did to win in modern sports.

I am going to say the government of the GDR doping athletes. They doped over 10,000 athletes, and changed each individuals life profoundly. They doped them without their knowledge and consent. Girls as young as twelve were brought into the program and doped.

The after affects to these people were out right criminal, the side effects were anything from depression, male-type hair growth, deep voices, liver problems, infertility, heart disease, miscarriages, and in some cases death.

Some woman had to go get sex change operations years later, due to their body and mind acting like a male. Cancer is prevelent in many of the woman.

Singlehandedly the government of East Germany performed the worst act to win that people have done to achieve sports greatness. It impacted the lives of over 10,000 individuals, and the effects of the program still resonate today.

Maybe its just me, but Modern doesn't really concern acts from 25 + years ago.....when the alleged actions of your article takes place...just me...will see what the people think...

Now i could do all the doping scandals that are happening present day but that would be quiet similar to your argument...but just of todays time frame...

Sports recruiting in college level athletes...and the money pay offs and scandals that go down with it...

You may not see all the stories from who gets busted and which coach was fired all the time...hey it might not even be the most POPULAR way to cheat these days...but if you think it doesn't happen your blind....

The reason i chose this topic is becasue it goes to show that GROWN ADULTS will do anything to get a college recruit on their team..even if that means breaking the rules...this hurts the NCAA the college of involvement and most importantly the athlete....it could go to screw up his professional career and worse its telling him it's ok to break rules just to win...no what kind of example does that set for the impressionable 18-19 year olds going into college?\

Take this money and break some rules just to come wins some games...Horrible

GROWN ADULTS can choose to do what they want. Children who are forced into a doping program is just palin wrong.

The NCAA has policing mechanisms in place to prevent and react to these situations. The Government of East Germany not only sponsered the program, but thousands of indviuals worked for it. This was not some back closet discussion beteween a trainer and a athlete. This was a horrendus act perputrated by people who wanted nothing more then to show their system was better then anothers.

Taking money for wins is a problem, however sponsering the doping of 10,000 athletes is worse. I can choose to not take steroids, or take them. I can choose to do the right thing and run a clean program. Hundreds of schools around the coutnry do. When your government forces you to cheat and doesn't even tell you, how can you compare the two?

40 years ago is modern???

very good you watched a TV series of events that happened 4 decades ago when 85% of the people on this site weren't even around for...where does the word "Modern" fit into any of that?

Jimi Hendrix, the who, zeplin, clapton, floyd, the doors were all Modern people back then, and i can fairly day that it was a long time ago...

When you say modern history, what is your cut-off? But I do agree with the East Germans... what they did was psychotic.

May 8, 2008  12:42 PM ET

May 8, 2008  12:44 PM ET

How about Tanya Harding?

May 8, 2008  12:49 PM ET

May 8, 2008  01:07 PM ET

May 11, 2008  04:34 AM ET

modern to me = anything after WW2. lol

May 11, 2008  06:26 AM ET

"Maybe its just me, but Modern doesn't really concern acts from 25 + years ago."

It is just you because you are an idiot. Great_1 hit the nail on the head with his statement. When people speak of the modern era, they are speaking of anything that took place after World War II. As far as your comment concerning plasma televisions being proof of the modern era, please refrain from being a ****.

May 11, 2008  09:27 AM ET

I call "modern" post-WWII.

May 11, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Many of you guys should go back to school or if you're already there, study harder

The modern age refers to the period beginning with the Industrial age in the 18th century, up until today
