It will NOT take the Pittsburgh Penguins 7 games to beat the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL's Eastern Conference Finals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won 8 out of 9 playoff games for a reason: they are the dominant Eastern Conference team and the Flyers have overachieved in beating two higher seeds.

The Flyers have beaten the Caps and the Habs. Nice. Those teams were both one dimensional(Capitals) and extremely young without a dominant scorer(Canadiens).

Are you telling me they are going to continue to rise up beyond all expectations and beyond being the WORST team in the NHL just last season? I say no. Go with the hottest, best, and deepest team who wiped the Senators and Rangers up with barely a single slice of Charmin.

Should I go on? Should I rant about statistics? About how there is no Sidney Crosby, or Malkin, or Hossa on the Flyers? Should I tell you their goaltender in Brion has never faced anything close to the Penguins offensive onslaught in a 7 game series in his life? No I should not. Any hockey fan knows the Flyers are beyond the underdog in this series and they dont have the playmakers that the Penguins do to compensate and overcome their underdog status.

Penguins win this series either in 4 or 6 games. Whatever it takes. Home ice advantage matters big time here.

There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Penguins are on a major roll. But if we are going to give them credit, like they are bound to be champs, we're supposed to detract from the Flyers because of luck? Or a fluke?

Yes - they knocked off 2 higher seeds. Overachieving is in the eye of the beholder. This team believes. And it WINS.

I don't know if you can call the Caps one-dimensional because 'they just have Ovechkin'. He and his 65 goals are multi-dimensional and that team flew into the playoffs. The Canadiens were the #1 seed. Its as if you made them garbage overnight.

Throw me stats all you want. We're supposed to believe they CAN'T rise up beyond expectations? Like they will run out of gas? What case study has been performed, PRE-SERIES, that determines a series can not go to 7 games because one team had that much better a regular season.

Perhaps the Giants had no chance to win almost a dozen in a row on the road in the playoffs. Perhaps the Marlins couldn't win a World Series as the wildcard, or the Rockies couldn't whitewash the NL in the playoffs last year. Maybe the Red Sox could never come back 3-0 against the curse.

They will fight to the finish.

As if the Flyers had a punchers chance to take this series to the final bell(7 games), now were hear their best defenseman(their only chance at stretching this series was to play great defense and win low scoring games) is out indefinately with blood clots in his left foot. See story here:

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=409624

So what we had was an underdog with a pipedream of taking this series 7 long without their key guy on defense to keep Crosby, Malkin, and Hossa in check. Seems like you guys just got the ultimate hand tied behind your back when you couldnt even afford it in the first place.

Winning and believing eventually run into brick walls that is better known in the sports world as BETTER TALENT. The Penguins have it and dont need to rely on believing because they and hockey fans KNOW it.

The Canadiens were the 1 seed because they had the best team without any superstars so they happen to win the most regular season Eastern Conference games. However, come playoff time, the SUPERSTARS are what are the difference in winning and losing and we saw the "mighty" #1 seed Montreal have to go 7 games just to get past the 8 seed Bruins.

Yes, tragically, their best defenseman is out. This year Sidney Crosby was out and some guy named Malkin took over and ended up a finalist for the Hart. Where did that team end up?

Moreover, the team leading the league in playoff scoring (FLYERS) was hoping all along for a low-scoring affair, as you said. Thats interesting. And a bit contradictory.

So they run into a talented squad. That eliminates every undercard to this series, such as the in-state rivalry, the long absence of a winner shared by both teams, the Flyers knocking off higher seeds and Crosby solidifying his place in the game - all of that. This series is over before it begins in your book. Everything they have done so far means zilch, despite the cases I pointed out to you in my first argument (Giants, Marlins, Rockies, Red Sox).

"The Canadiens were the 1 seed because they had the best team without any superstars so they happen to win the most regular season Eastern Conference games." - Um.....what? Huh? Ok..they had no superstars, 'happened' to win the most games, and...well you lost me.

The Flyers have overcome much adversity. But you say its just going to stop. I say they go on, and lose in game 7.

Well now, lets see......if anybody wants to dream the Flyers are going to win three out of the next six games, be my guest. I don't need to dream. I got a 1-0 series lead and the best team this side of Detroit on my side.

Arguments in throwdowns should be independent of sporting results from any game. Thats just silly. If that is your 3rd argument, then I pity you, whether I win or lose this throwdown.

The Flyers had things working last night, and ended up handing over the momentum of the game with unforced turnovers and bad puck management. When you make sloppy mistakes, guys like Malkin and Crosby will kill you, of course.

I guess you forgot that the Flyers have lost ALL THREE game 1's they have had so far, and gone on to win 2 of the series. Hence the results of last night's game are inconsequential.

The point of this throwdown is not to argue whether the Flyers can WIN this series or not. The object is to rebuff the notion that you can PREDICT a series can NOT go 7 games before it even started, and then enter a 3rd argument based upon the results of ONE game. That in and of itself seems precarious, as you seemingly waited for that game to happen.

The Flyers have their backs against the wall, if you consider 1 game down against the wall. And they have bounced back twice.

If Biron can get settled and they eliminate needless mistakes, this series is far from over.

Your wish is my command. Surely you will do better than 16-1 like your predecessor. LOL

I should be careful what I wish for. Here I am, and I hate all things Philadelphia.

Habs are without a dominant scorer, but they sure could score a lot of goals. Look at their powerplay.

I will finish this up in a few hours. Got to run some errands. Good luck black domer.

Philly cheese steak though is very good!

The chips are stacked against me...as I'm challenged here on a TD regarding 2 teams I despise. Oh well. We shall see.

I haven't taken on the peculiar house of the unknown Cassidy in a long time.

Report Offensive Comment

Wow...I'm losing 4-0 already. Maybe I should decline these throwdowns in the future.

Report Offensive Comment

I would hope people read the arguments going forward, rather than vote blindly. Because thats whats happening. There are particularly weak arguments on the left regarding a throwdown topic that is an easy win.

Report Offensive Comment

Weak arguments dont lead to 4-0 in my favor Dizzle. 0 votes for you would indicate weak arguments on the right. LOL

Report Offensive Comment

Actually...your topic is beyond easy to argue, and in my opinion, your arguments are just stating the obvious. Also...keep in mind...we're friends - i get your fan mail requests to visit td's.

No, i read the arguments to date.

I mean...hey...haha - I'll take the blind votes as long as we get the same amount.

Well, they way I look at it.
- No one was saying the Bruins were going to push the Habs to 7 in the first round
- Many predicted the Caps to finish the Flyers before 7 (outside Philly or course) in the first round.
- Many thought the Stars would fall too the Sharks before 7 in the second round, after being underdogs to the Ducks in the first
- Almost everyone thought the Habs would roll over the Flyers before 7, only to be beat in 5

I'd say the Flyers pushing the Pens to 7 is just as likely as all of the scenarios above were at the time.

Well, these two teams are obviously hot, and I have to hand it to the Flyers for beating the FAVORITE in the Eastern Conference going into the Playoffs, and beating the Capitals, with possibly the best player in Hockey right now (Alexander Ovechkin ~ Washington Capitals). Also, even though the Penguins have been 8-1 in the playoffs, it doesn't mean they will keep flying high and mighty against EVERY team they face, and I think the force stops here.

I think it will come down to the powerplay, and the goal scoring. It may be true that in the playoffs, Marc Andre-Fleury has had a lower GAA, but at the same time, look at the shot difference at each goalie:

Biron (PHI) - 361 Saves
Andre-Fleury (PIT) - 220 Saves

Now you see why this may be a problem when you compare the two goalie's statistics. This tells me that the Flyers have had to defend the better offensive teams. So as of now, I will go right, but the arguments may suay, if they do.

Report Offensive Comment

I hate the Flyers. But their performance so far has to be respected. I've watched the Penguins exclusively and the Senators were a joke - while my Rangers at least put up a minor fight. No doubt that they are among the elite in hockey. I strayed from statistics in this TD..although I may revisit. I don't think there is a need when you are arguing a concept where anything could clearly happen.
