The Bills of the early 90's were second class citizens...they simply weren't good enough to compete with the NFC powerhouses.

41-1-3 in the last 30? You find a following, or something? ;-)

Four straight years the Bills lost the Super Bowl. Amazing accomplishment to get there 4 years in a row, but still, they were just the best of the worst. People talk about an AFC dominance now have no clue. Back then the NFC was not only dominant, the AFC had almost zero chance.

Not only did the bills lose 4 straight years, they lost all of them to teams in the same DIVISION in the NFC. Clearly the NFC East alone was better than any TEAM in the AFC those years.

I love Marv Levy, Thurman Thomas, and Jim Kelly. They played some of the most amazing playoff games I've ever seen. Great team.

But, not a team that could hope to compete with their NFC counterpart. Yeah, you can demonize the kicker in the Giants game. It was all HIS fault, right? Who gets the blame in the two blowout losses to Dallas? Personally, I love the Bills and that whole pre-salary cap era of football.

Point is, the Bills, although dominating the AFC back then were only the 5th or 6th best team in the NFL.

"People talk about an AFC dominance now have no clue. "

Wanna talk AFC dominace???

1990 Passing leaders: Warren Moon led the NFL in EVERY PASSING STAT. Completions, attempts, yds, TDs. Oh yeah, he was in the AFC

1990 Rusing leaders: 3 of the top 5 rushers were in the AFC. Thurman(#2), Marion Butts(#3), Bobby Humphrey(#5). Derrick Fenner of the AFC West Seahawks led the NFL in Rushing TD's

1990 Sack Leaders: 3 of the top 5 sack leaders were in the AFC. Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas and Leslie Oneal.

1990 INT leaders: 2 of the top 3 are from the AFC

Thats just 1990 and when it comes to passing and rushing, the AFC was clearly the more dominant conference overall. Sacks and INTS were clearly in favor of the AFC as well.

1991 - For starters, Thurman Thomas was the NFL MVP from the weaker AFC. Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, and Bernie Kosar are in the TOP 5 for passing yds. Yes, thats 4 out of the top 5 QB's in the NFL are from the AFC. As for passing TD's, 4 of the top 6 are from the AFC including #1 Jim Kelly. As far as REC's go, 4 fo the top 5 are from the AFC also

Out of space, More to come......

I don't know where you are going with individual stats. Certainly individuals can have a great personal performance from either conference. That AFC offenses dominated AFC defenses in 1990 and 1991 doesn't really mean much to this argument.

None of it has anything to do with the complete and utter dominance of the NFC in the dozen years leading up to the salary cap.

Consider this. From 1985 - 1996 The NFC was 12-0 in Super Bowls. Outscoring the AFC an incredible 455-198. Average score in the Super Bowl in that run:

NFC 38 AFC 17

The Bills were best of the losers...losing 4 of them and being outscored 139-71. Average score 35-18. Slightly better than the overall AFC average but still an embarrassing average margin of loss of 17 points. And that's with the Norwood game factored in

"1991 - For starters, Thurman Thomas was the NFL MVP from the weaker AFC."

No doubt they had a great offense that year. But you leave out the fact they were ranked 27th (out of 28 teams at the time) on DEFENSE. Go back to that average margin of loss in those Super Bowls to find out why, despite having one of the best offenses in the NFL, like every other AFC team for 12 years they couldn't win the SB.

Lets throw individual stats out the window.......

1990: The top 2 Offense's in the NFL belonged to Buffalo and Houston.
1990: 3 of the top 5 Defense's are in the AFC - Miami, KC and Pitt

1991: 2 of the top 4 offense's are in the AFC - Buffal and Houston
1991: 5 of the top 10 Defense's are in the AFC

1992: 5 of the top 10 Offense's are in the AFC
1992: 2 of the top 4 Defense's are in the AFC

1993: 3 of the top 5 offense's are in the AFC
1993: 5 of the top 10 Defense's are in the AFC

Where OH WHERE is the dominance by the NFC?? In the Superbowl, but thats NOT WHAT this about. This isnt about who won the most SB's in the 90's and what conference was better in the post season. Your TD imply's that not only the Bills, but the rest of the AFC was weak. They may have been weak in the SB, but during the regular season they went stride for stride with the NFC, and at time SURPASSED the NFC in statisticaly catergories.....Why do I rely on stats??? Because Jim Brown goin for a career average of 5.0 per carry and 100+ yds per game are BOTH stats. Stats is what seperates the good teams, from the bad teams.....

"In the Superbowl, but thats NOT WHAT this about."

Uh, it's EXACTLY what this is about. And cherry picking team stats doesn't change that.

Why in 1990 do you only mention the top 2 offenses, in 1991 the top 4, in 1992 the top 10 and in 1993 the top 5? Hmmm.

Why in 1990 do you only mention the top 5 defenses, in 1991 the top 10, in 1992 the top 4, and in 1993 the top 10?

Seems kind of odd that you would jump all over the map from year to year until you get to a happy median to support your argument. That's a classic example of abusing stats, Goodell.

And not a one of those stats explains away the FACT that the NFC not only won the Super Bowl for 12 straight years, but did so convincingly almost every year. Utter and complete dominance in the only game that mattered year after year can't be covered up with hand picked stats.

Who cares if the Bills had a great offense when they were severely lacking on the defensive end of the ball? Offensive football was good enough to get them to the big game in the AFC, but wasn't going to beat the likes of the Redskins (who had an even better offense) or the Cowboys who had top 5 defenses to go with excellent offenses. They lacked balance.

"And not a one of those stats explains away the FACT that the NFC not only won the Super Bowl for 12 straight years"

How am I supposed to do that?? How am I supposed to explain somthing there is no explanation for? The NFC did win 12 straight superbowls, but in doing so they beat some good teams. The TD isnt even about winning SB's. The TD title says NOTHING about winning or losing SB's..

1985 SB: SF vs Miami..I guess the fact that Dan Marino threw for 5000 yds and 48 TD's and lost the SB makes Dan a second class citizen, right??

I guess the fact that John Elway took his Broncos to the SB's 3 out of 4 years makes him and his efforts second class just like the Bills.

John Elway = Jeff George in your opinion

Did you call me out on this TD to try to get me another loss, or to point out the fact the Bills lost 4 SB's??? If you did it to point out that the Cowboy's of the 90's were better then the Bills of the 90's, you have some issues. In the 90's, the Cowboys were better then the Bills.Duh

From 1990-1993 the Bills went 4-2 against the NFC in the regular season. One of those losses was to the Redskins in week 16 when the Bills had already CLINCHED Home field

Outstanding TD idea! The Bills are a bunch of losers! Always have been always will be!

Nice thought for a topic CCC.

May 14, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Roger is going to drop this TD- He will only have 24 hours to replace his PC after slamming it against the wall.

CCC - If I never hear from you again 'cause Roger has found you, nice knowing you.

Play nice, gentlemen...

May 14, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Is this coming down to rings versus numbers...?

May 14, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I have to subtract points from Goodell's argument for putting Bernie Kosar in a sentance with Dan Marino and Jim Kelly....lol

There was a reason the sack leaders were from the AFC, the lines weren't very good across the board, and picks can be explained by bad QB play.....

the NFC was dominate record wise, I mean Buffalo was the best team in the AFC no doubt, but they couldn't beat even the second best team(s) from the NFC.

May 14, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Ring's dont matter porkins......Are you saying that Brady and the Pats were second class cause they got beat in the SB???

May 14, 2008  10:35 AM ET

still waiting to vote though
