This TD is to attempt to prove that even though one player may hold a large statistical edge over another, that does not definitively make him a better basketball player.

Here is my case: I will argue that Tayshaun Prince is a more valuable basketball player than Carmelo Anthony. Since they'll obviously be brought up, let's get the stats out of the way:

Prince: 12.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, 46.3 fg %, 36.5 3-point %, 1.2 turnovers

Anthony: 24.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.0 apg, 46.2 fg %, 29.4 3-point%, 3.1 turnovers

*To those who vote on names or who wins in stats, feel free to vote for my opponent now*

At his best, Anthony is a sub-par defender. He's slow on rotations, and would never be counted on to stop an opposing teams best player. Prince has made 4 consecutive NBA All-defensive teams while being matched up against the best scorers of the opposing teams. He makes critical defensive plays in big games.

On offense, Carmelo is more talented. However, Prince is better at playing within an offensive system. He doesn't score 25 a night, because that is not his role on his team.

If you want glory stats and highlights, take Melo. If you want to win, you take Prince.

More Valuable? Who is more valuable? It's Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo Anthony has achieved more than Tayshaun Prince in so many statistical categories. Scoring. Rebounds. Assists. Steals. The list goes on...

Prince has NEVER recieved a single MVP vote. In his 6 year career. Carmelo has recieved votes for MVP in THREE different years of his 5 year career!

Sure, Prince might have the "potential" to score a little more if he focused more on offense than defense, and perhaps inch closer to Carmelo numbers, but 'potential' is meaningless unless you let it out!

Carmelo is about 4 years YOUNGER than Prince, and this last year scored 25.7 points a game. Prince scored 13.2 Prince's defense brings him closer to 'melo, but not nearly enough to pass him.

1) Melo was fourth in the NBA in points per game!(topped only by LeBron, Kobe, Iverson)
2) Carmelo had a higher FG% than ALL those 3!
3) Only LeBron had more rebounds.(7.9 to 7.4)!
4) Melo had a higher free throw % than LeBron!
5) Melo had a higher 3-point shooting % than LeBron AND Iverson!

Carmelo is the real deal. As far as Most Valuable goes, Carmelo is the man.

Wait...you're saying Melo's stats are better? Gee. Thanks. I hadn't noticed.

"Carmelo Anthony has achieved more than Tayshaun Prince in so many statistical categories"

That's great! Has he achieved any, you know, actual success? Pretty stats win you fantasy leagues not necessarily basketball games. Does Melo make his team better? Or does he just jack up shots until his ppg is pretty? Why is ANYONE who shoots 29% from 3, jacking up 800+ threes in 5 years? For his teams good? Or for his shoe contracts good?

Ever see Melo in the playoffs? His "screw-passing-just-drive-and-shoot" game gets stuffed by teams playing good defense (39% fg and 4 turnovers per assist in the playoffs).

Melo received votes for the MVP? Yeah, his best finish is 13th. Awesome. Dominique Wilkins once finished 2nd in MVP voting, but do you want him on your team for a Finals game 7, or just in a dunk contest?

Melo's 25 ppg are pretty worthless if the guy he's guarding goes for 35. With Prince on my team I can make an opposing player the calibur of Kobe cry in futility, and demoralize his team (see Finals, 2004). Guys like that help you WIN, which is why you play the game.

Carmelo played on a team that scored 107 points a game. (2nd best in NBA) The Pistons scored 90.1 points a game. The WORST in the NBA. Obviously these teams are totally different in how they play. The players are coached differently and coaches focus on different things. Carmelo is encouraged to score, score, run, run. Prince is told to play defense.

Lets look at when Detroit/Denver played head on.
Prince: 13 points, 2-4 freethrows, 1-2 3point shooting, no steals
Anthony: 27 points, 9-12 freethrows, 2-3 3point shooting, 3 steals

Prince: 20 points, 6 rebounds,
Anthony: 23 points, 11 rebounds,

Detroit won the games against Denver, but in each of them, Carmelo outplayed Prince. The simple fact is, Prince had a better team around him that all did their job and had some good nights against the Nuggets who dont. All the Pistons need Prince to do is play defense. The Nuggets w/o melo are garbage. The Pistons w/o Prince are still a good team.

Carmelo's shooting % and 3P% is steadily growing better. He scored more ppg this year than KOBE at his age, with a better fg% and more rebounds!! This kid is just as good as Kobe at his age, and YOU just don't like him!

I LOVE how you left out that Prince had 9 assists in EACH of those games. (I guess you cherry-pick stats like you do TD's? :-)

How about we look at more than 2 games?

Average game of Melo when guarded by Prince:

7 fg on 19 attempts (37%), 18.4 points, 5.2 reb, 2.9 asst, 2.5 TO

Average game of Prince when guarded by Melo:

5 fg on 10 attempts (50%), 12.5 points, 4.1 reb, 3.5 ast, 1.2 TO

Prince's team is 8-2 in those games. If you're shooting 37%, you're hurting your team.

I've heard the "without him they're garbage" argument about AI, Grant Hill, Vince Carter, etc. It's rarely true.

Prince has an excellent post game, can use either hand to finish, has a good mid-range shot, and can hit the 3. Were he a selfish player, he could pull a Joe Johnson and find his way onto a losing team where the offense is all about him. Johnson averaged 14 ppg in his role on a winning team. He went to Atlanta and instantly scored 22 ppg and started making All-Star teams. But not because he was a better player.

This isn't fantasy basketball, its real. If you've ever been on a court, you know a team of 5 Tayshuans whould horsewhip a team of 5 Melo's anytime, anyplace.

1) Prince was third on his team in points. (melo was 2nd on his team)

2) Fourth on team in rebounds!(melo was 2nd)

3) 9th on team in steals per game! (melo was 3rd)

4) 7th on the team in blocked shots per game(melo was 4th)

5) 4th in assists(melo was 3rd)

I realize people have probably already made up their mind on
voting(IF they haven't shamelessly voted already), but they need to realize that in all your flashy arguments you have failed completely to address the honest truth that Prince is SURROUNDED by a BETTER team! The whole argument that Prince is a winner says more about his great TEAM around him, and their coaching than only him personally. Prince is ONLY valuable, when surrounded by people who DO score.

Carmelo is strikingly simaliar to Kobe at his age. Melo had MORE PPG, better FG%, better 3-point %, and more rebounds per game. You've seen how Kobe, when combined with a good big man can win MULTIPLE championships.

Bottom line: Would you rather have a skinny, long-armed ball-slapper who scores 13.2 a game, or one of the brightest young stars in the NBA? If you are building a team, GET the scoring star, and then the defensive players selected.

Good luck, Cain-Willis.

May 14, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Melo was involved in the gang gathering that resulted in the Death of Darrent Williams, not sure I would want him on my team

May 14, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Melo was also carrying my backpack once....I never did get my "stuff" back.

May 14, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Hey, Frank. Is Tayshaun on steroids? You say every professional athlete is but he's built like a twig.

I'll need it. Especially if my haters finds out about this td, and your NMI posse....

May 14, 2008  09:15 PM ET

You'll get a fair hearing, especially now that you're not pounding on someone who's clueless.

May 14, 2008  10:45 PM ET

lol.....or am I?

May 15, 2008  02:24 AM ET

Good offense vs. defense matchup...but I'll take Prince. Melo has no disciplines.

May 15, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Once this is finished I'll send it out to the Fannation community. Since you took a while to post your first argument it never got on the board. Good job, and good luck Willis/Cain

Great throwdown so far, gentlemen... I came into this actually excited to see someone stick up for Tayshaun Prince, who I have long felt was far underrated and under-appreciated at his position. Carmelo is definitely great for stats, but in this throwdown the most telling was the 37% from the field... hitting 20 points a game is great, but if you have to take 20 shots to get there it all kind of seems like a moot point. His team gets to 107 a game DESPITE him, one might argue -- a team has a finite number of shots it takes in a game, and if one of your guys who takes a high percentage of them fails to convert regularly on those shots, it is a detriment and not a boon for the team. Carmelo may get 20-25 a game, which is great stats and pads the bank account... but if it takes 20-25 SHOTS a game to get those 20-25 points, it is counterproductive to the ultimate goal of winning championships...
