Rushing TD (19)
Consecutive games w/ TD (9)

Emmitt was the greatest All around RB, He could run the ball, Catch the ball, was an excellent blocker, and more importantly, his durability made him a threat week in week out.

It is Jim Brown.

Brown may not have as good of career stats as Smith but Brown played only nine seasons in the NFL, to Smith's 15. Brown played in the era of 12 and 14 game seasons, Smith played in the 16 game season era. Lastly, Smith had about double Brown's career carries.

So, if Smith had double the carries, shouldn't he have double the touchdowns and double the yardage? He should. But he doesn't. If he was truely the best back of all time, he would.

Smith has 18355 career rushing yards. Brown had 12312. To double Brown's stats (like he should) Smith would need 24624 career rushing yards.

Smith had 164 career touchdowns. Brown had 106. If Smith had double Brown's total, he would need 212 career touchdowns.

Brown also never missed a game.

Brown:
5.2 YPC
104.3 YPG
.045 touchdowns per attempt

Smith:
4.2 YPC
81.2 YPG
.037 touchdowns per attempt

Brown is just plain better.

I agree that Brown was an amazing RB, but he too walked away from football way too early. You say Emmitt should have double the yards, double the touchdowns? So I guess Brown never would have peaked, he would have just kept running over guys for the rest of his days? He walked away from football, so no one knows what he could have accomplished the rest of his career, its all speculation. Emmitt on the other hand left no room for speculation, he played 15 seasons in the NFL, accumulating numerous titles and records. Most notably All time leading Rusher! I don't want to hear that Brown could have or should have, because he didn't. Same goes for Barry Sanders. Who knows, they could have suffered career ending injury the next time they touched the ball, or they could have went on to be the best running back ever without question. But there is the question of what could have happened, and any answer is speculation.

Wow . . . I wish I could give you a standing ovation for that argument. Not.

Brown played in the era of 12-game seasons and 14-game seasons. He could have an extra 26 games if he was playing at the same time of Emmit Smith . . .

. . . and I am sure that Brown would love to play during Smith's time. When Brown played, Running Backs weren't supposed to 1,000 yard seasons like Brown, it was just too hard back in that era. In Smith's era, it was much easier to get yards.

Anyways, you are saying that if Brown would have played another few seasons, he would have done terrible in them? Well, as Brown got older, he got better. I think he might have even gotten better if he played more seasons.

Brown had a career year in the last year of his career, totalling 21 touchdowns, 133.7 total yards per game and a 5.3 YPC.

The thing that makes Brown so amazing (other than his stats that were the best by an RB ever) was his duribility. He never missed a game. That pretty much cancels out your theory about having a career ending injury.

The thing that makes Smith overrated is that he ran behind a fantastic line. Ryan Howard could run behind it and get a 1,000 yard season.

Brown would love to play in Smiths time? You have to be kidding me. In the modern era of football players are bigger, stronger, and faster. Players are groomed since pee wee football. Some spend the majority of their adolescence and young adulthood fine tuning and developing their game. How would Brown benefit from playing in the modern era? And the fact that Brown played in 12 and 14 game seasons only attest to Smiths durability. Smith had to play against bigger stronger and faster defenders longer. I think Brown would have done good in a 16 game season, but thats speculation. Who Knows? You say Brown got better as he got older? He retired in his peak! And Who knows what could have happened, more speculation. The only facts are the records Smith made. Even in Arizona Smith was productive. There goes your fantastic line theory. In 2004 at the ripe old age of 35 Smith started 15 games and rushed for 937 yards. After 14 seasons he still had it in him, running behind the Cardinals line at that. And let me reiterate, HE IS THE ALL TIME RUSHING LEADER! If there is any gauge to tell if a RB is good or not it's Yards accumulated. We all know where Smith stands there. 18,355 yards. still#1

I'm almost positive Detriot Steel is going with Barry Sanders.

May 14, 2008  06:06 PM ET

For the 1000th time...Its Jim Brown

May 14, 2008  06:06 PM ET

He is #2, Guru. I am sure you can guess the 3rd with EEE's...

Barry Sanders was great, but walked away too soon. Who knows what could have happened?

May 14, 2008  06:23 PM ET

I love Barry Sanders but I thought that Brown is much better.

May 14, 2008  06:29 PM ET

Ki-Jana Carter?

May 14, 2008  06:32 PM ET

Brown's Stats might have went down if he had played as long as Emmitt. I Believe it was Overall RB. I Agree with BrownMagik, Smith did it longer and better than anyone. Plain And Simple.

You could've went with both Brown or Sanders or Sweetness and gotten my vote. I figured you would choose Sanders due to Lions being your favorite team.

May 14, 2008  06:35 PM ET

1: Barry Sanders
2: Jim Brown
3: Walter Payton
4: Deuce Mcallister

Cedric Benson could run behind the Line that Emmitt had..... And I think your a Better RB than Benson Steveo

May 14, 2008  06:51 PM ET

Magic, your whole argument is basically saying that stop saying could of or should of. Why not throw some more stats in there and talk more about Smith, not about something else. Just for that, you've lost my vote.

May 14, 2008  06:54 PM ET

its jim brown. he played in a time period where runners didn't get the yards he did. and most incredibly to me- HE NEVER MISSED A GAME!!!

May 14, 2008  06:56 PM ET

Brown was ona Pro Bowl team for EVERY SINGLE YEAR OF HIS CAREER. If he would have played 16-game seasons then he probably could have had about the same stats as Smith, even only playing for nine years.

Even Ryan Howard could run behind that line, and he is the slowest player in the MLB
