People obviously don't understand the term "underrated". This is silly. Just because a guy is a star doesn't mean he can't be underrated. It means at first glance, you don't realize how great a player is/was. And Steve Carlton had the highest HOF voting percentage all time 98.7%, so I don't think he can be discussed as underrated.

Steve Carlton didn't have the highest. I believe that was Tom Seaver. Carlton did have a high percentage though. I think it was 95%. However, what the HoF committee thought in the mid-90s doesn't apply to today. Carlton is usually forgotten about because of the emergence of dominant pitching in the 1990s. Carlton is the greatest left-handed pitcher since 1960, but he is constantly overshadowed.

As for Gossage, the committee refused to put him in the HoF for a long time. I don't know why though. He is one of the greatest closers of all-time.

Manny Ramirez isn't underrated. He thinks he's the greatest left fielder in Sawks history, and a lot of people would agree to a certant extent.

I think Glavine is underrated as is Greg Maddux. Maddux is going to end his career with the most liveball era wins of all-time. This is always lost in the hoopla over a practically meaningless stat like strikeouts. Maddux may not have pitched a perfect game, but he is the most consistent pitcher of all-time, and he only has been in the news for his 350th win, unlike Clemens, who ESPN covered his every move. Maddux was clean, which most pitchers of his era were not.

Forfeited Turn

Okay. I guess you gave up. Oh well.

I really don't know how you think Gary Carter is underrated. You have a lot of players I wouldn't consider "underated".

If you aren't going to go forfeit..or let me know you are taking the challenge...

Manny Ramirez is underrated? He's been mentioned as the best right handed hitter since Dimaggio. He's completely appreciated.

May 15, 2008  09:14 PM ET

how is Tom Glavine Underrated?

May 15, 2008  09:37 PM ET

Do you ever hear him discussed among the best Left Handers of all time? Don't say yes because if you do you are a liar. He will finish with 300 wins, and 3500 K's, yet gets no talk when talking about the generation's best.

yeah i dont get this td.. manny is not underrated

May 16, 2008  12:03 AM ET

No vote both lists have a bunch of highly rated players. Manny, Todd Helton, Maddux, Glavine, and Gossage!! None of those players are underrated

May 16, 2008  12:18 AM ET

In my opinion Craig Biggio is one of the most overrated players ever.

May 16, 2008  12:47 AM ET

Both lists are absurd.

I completely agree. Underrated at 2b? Maybe Ray Durham.

And CCC, both lists are absurd, but I know from experience that these kinds of lists will just make everyone angry, and no one will agree with you

"And CCC, both lists are absurd, but I know from experience that these kinds of lists will just make everyone angry, and no one will agree with you"

True that. But come on. Names like Manny, Glavine, Carter, Helton, Carlton, Maddox, and Gossage as UNDER rated? These were some of the biggest and most popular stars in the game during their respective careers. Nobody EVER under rated those guys. They feared them.

May 16, 2008  06:43 AM ET

Irish, really? Carlton AND Maddux? I can't buy it.

Yeah, I defintely agree. Helton may not be one of the most popular stars, but he sure was respected. And Gossage is one of the few closers in the HOF. For closer, I'd say maybe Lee Smith, Quisenberry isn't a bad pick

May 16, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Manny should not be on a list with under rated

May 16, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Glavine and Ramirez underrated? Thats news to me.

May 16, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Gossage took so many years to get into the HoF, it's ridiculous. Carlton and Glavine SHOULD be mentioned as the greatest pitchers of the live ball era, but Clemens, Ryan, and other power pitchers always end up with that distinction.

May 16, 2008  03:31 PM ET

There are different levels of underrated. There are people like Simmons, Larkin, and Baines who are practically no names today, and there are players like Carlton and Maddux, who are the best at their position, but constantly get shafted by the media.

May 16, 2008  04:06 PM ET

Harold Baines played over 60% of his career at DH...

May 16, 2008  04:35 PM ET

He played around 40% in the outfield however.

May 17, 2008  05:13 PM ET

"People obviously don't understand the term "underrated". This is silly. Just because a guy is a star doesn't mean he can't be underrated."

If everyone knows him, and knows the fact that they are good, he is not underrated...

Maddux is my favorite player of all time but he certainly is not underrated. He was named the best pitcher of the 90s.
