Well I'm not sure why we have to lose the entire first argument here...However, in an earlier NHL I would have started in goal. The way the NHL is going now though...I will go with the obvious competition.
Since your guy is still in the Playoffs and gaining popularity, lets not forget the regular season and what my guy has done for his team and the NHL.
Therefore, my choice is...

Crosby Won the Hart Trophy (MVP of the NHL) & Art Ross Trophy (Scoring Title) in only his 2nd year in the league.
He was the youngest player ever to win the Art Ross Trophy.
He was the youngest player ever to be named as an NHL Team Captain.
Sidney Crosby quite simply is the Face of the NHL & if the league had any marketing brains they would play up a lot more on his developing rivalry with Ovechkin???.Kind of the same thing that was done in the late 80???s and 90???s with Gretzky & Lemieux. And at only 20 years old (21 in Aug 2008) he could be one of the youngest players ever to win the Stanley Cup.
Pittsburgh has built their team around Crosby & has now made it to the Cup Finals???simply an amazing feat in just 3 yrs. Crosby has a great supporting cast in Malkin, Malone, Sykora, Hossa, Staal, Whitney, Gonchar & Fleury. And the Penguins being still a young team should be a contender for years to come.

But not forget the title of this TD.
Being the guy you build a franchise around is more than just who has better stats. It's about building a team around your superstar & making guys you play with better players.
For a Superstar, Crosby is not afraid to drop the gloves. He recorded his 1st Gordie Howe hat trick in Dec 2007 against the Bruins. With a Goal, Assist & a Fight. He actually had more penalty mins than points in his 1st season (Pts 102 - PIM 110)
The Penguins had filed for bankruptcy 10 yrs ago & almost moved to Kansas City 2 seasons ago. When they won Draft Lottery after the lockout season, they really did win the Lottery. Because when the Pens drafted Crosby season tickets jumped, interest in the team grew & eventually that led to a new arena, which is currently being built and is scheduled to open in 2010 thus keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh.
They were bankrupt & almost homeless & now in the Stanley Cup Final it's an amazing turn around.
Lemieux may have saved the franchise when he took it over but Crosby is The Franchise!

Until LATE LAST yr the Pens were still in trouble & seeking alternatives. Mario has more to do with that then Sid does!
Coincidentally, this franchise solidified its stay not after Crosby, but after MALKIN!
The addition of EM, Gonchar, Staal, Laraque, Hossa & ROBERTS etc. certainly has improved revenues & appeal to the fans!

He also has a little less to work with. W/O Ovechkin the Caps don't make the playoffs. W/O Crosby the Pens still make the playoffs.
