With the Cavaliers' season over, I think it is time to look at what the Cavs should do in the downtime in order to get back to the Finals. I, as a die-hard Cleveland fan am the first to admit that they need another piece to add to complement Bron Bron.

First off, Zydrunas Ilgalskus has become a sort of a liability. His defense is no longer what it has been, and he is not a presence down low on offense. The only facet of his game he still does on a high level is his mid-range shot and free-throw shooting. So what am I saying? Let Z go. Yes, I said it. Elton Brand can opt of his contract this year, and moving him to power forward make a better matchup versus the power forwards in the East such as Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett. This frees Big Ben to go back to his natural position of center, because he at times looked out of place D'ing up Antawn Jamison and KG.

Ron Artest could also opt out this season. His defensive game is obvious, as he was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. Despite his off-court issues, Artest is still a very good player, and doesn't have to be the big star. He can defer to LeBron.

A third option is Baron Davis. Out of space, but will explain next

For Z, I don't really see releasing him as being a possibility. He has 2 years left with around $22 million left on the contract. Z almost averaged a double-double this past year, so he isn't completely incompetent. They might as well keep him for a year and either keep him if he plays well or trade him as an expiring contract in the next offseason.

Ron Artest has already said he will not opt out this year. I also doubt Baron Davis and Elton Brand will leave as well. Brand is a possibility, but he probably won't make or lose money in whatever he does.

If I were Danny Ferry, I would try to trade Wally Szczerbiak. Next year is his last year, so he is an expiring contract that can pull in a big name. He makes $12 million per year, so they have some options.

I would trade Wally for Richard Jefferson. The Nets are trying to get rid of Jefferson. They tried to trade him for Jermaine O'Neal, and now they are trying a Carmelo trade. Jefferson would be what the Cavs wanted in Larry Hughes.

A major priority is to resign Daniel Gibson and Delonte West. Those 2 played very well at the end of the year, and they are too valuable to lose right now.

I'm not sure about Jefferson. He looks like he is on his way to Denver right now, so a deal to Cleveland is unlikely.

Anyways, what is - or should be - the number one concern for Cleveland is a guard. Point or 2 guard, it is important that the Cavs sign one. Delonte West is good, but at times he makes a crucial mistake, such as taking it to the lane instead of passing, etc. He tries a little to hard to be the star, and he is not that great, shown by his 4 TOs a game against Boston in the semis. A trade involving Wally is also interesting, but how about to Golden State for Davis? A trade involving Szczerbiak, Devin Brown and possibly Dwayne Jones or Sasha Pavlovic could work.

I do think Big Z is expendable. The Cavs played at their highest level, not with him, but with Anderson Varajeao and Joe Smith manning the front court. Actually, the Cavs have 5 big men on the roster, and a trade involving any of them (with the exception of Smith, who was as valuable as a role player as you can get against Boston) for Artest would also be an interesting option. Artest and James would be a sight to see, as I think he, not Jefferson would be a better sidekick for LeBron.

I do not think the Nuggets-Nets trade will go through. It seems outrageous for the Nuggets to trade 2 stars for a star, a project point guard, and a draft pick. I don't see this going through.

The Wally-Jefferson trade makes more sense because Wally has one more year on his contract left, and the 2009 offseason has some of the best free agents in the game. The Cavs are a much better team than the Nets, and they are one player like Jefferson away from another Finals appearance.

Golden State wouldn't take Wally, Brown, Jones, or Pavlovic because of their style of play. Davis is the most valuable asset to that team, and he is indispensable. He will be resigned long term.

Z is expendable after this upcoming year when he has 1 year left on his contract. If you trade for him now, you are getting an old center for two long years. If they trade him next year, they could get a star with his expiring contract. Artest would not be traded from Sacramento. He's been too good their to mess with.

Jefferson would be the best trade the Cavs could get. The Nets are desperate for a trade, and the thought of ca space for next offseason could get them to bite on the Wally trade.

But Ron Artest has publicly said that he wouldn't mind a trade, remember that he said he would like to go to among other teams, Denver. He's not happy in Sacramento, and may try to force his way out of there.

Even though it may not make very much sense for Denver to trade away Melo and Camby for Marcus Williams and Jefferson, George Karl no longer wants anything to do with Carmelo Anthony, and Richard Jefferson wants out of Jersey. Numerous places, like ESPN, SI, and the NY Daily News are coming out with stories on the daily about this deal going down. I actually think Karl hates Anthony enough to make a seemingly stupid deal like this.

Another thing I didn't even think of until today was the draft. The Cavs pick 19th , and by then, a Brandon Rush of Chris Douglas-Roberts could still potentially be around. Both players are swingmen that the Cavs could use. The signing of one of these would actually fill the need that either an Artest (that you don't think would happen) or a Jefferson (that I don't think would happen) would fill.

I highly doubt they will trade Artest. We've already seen his inability to keep his mind straight in Indiana, where he demanded a bunch of trades and then said he didn't mean it.

Well now the Carmelo trade for sure is not going down. It is the perfect time for the Jefferson-Wally trade. It is the best deal the Nets can get for Jefferson, and it gives the Cavs a missing piece for their puzzle. LeBron needs a 2 guard like him, and Larry Hughes was not the guy.

In the draft, I like Kosta Koufus as the pick. With the addition of Jefferson, the shooting guard spot is taken, so center is the biggest need. With Z being traded after the 2008 season, they need a young center to groom. Koufus is an all-around good player who can end up being the best European center in the league in a few years. He's got great post moves for his skinny stature.

Atroo showdown.

May 20, 2008  08:53 PM ET

Because of his defensive prowess. That should be the last part of my argument.

Wow...Esco doing a TD.

Its been some time, hasn't it?

Trade Wally, West, Gooden and next years #1 to Memphis for Mike Conley, and this season's #1.

May 20, 2008  10:28 PM ET

**meant Gibson., not Gooden

May 20, 2008  10:32 PM ET

Don't you ever insult Z, Esco!

May 20, 2008  10:40 PM ET

Z's not the same as he used to be.

May 20, 2008  10:41 PM ET

Madmaxxx that is one of the dumbest trades anyone has ever suggested.

May 20, 2008  10:50 PM ET

No, see Maxxx, the point is for the Cavs to get BETTER.

May 20, 2008  11:36 PM ET

Ummm James keeps crying for a true point and he would get one. They would also get rid of 23 million in cap and take in the #5 (HELLO OJ MAYO!!!!!!) And they have the Ca$h to go after Brand... I am sorr but a lineup of Ilgauskas, Brand, James, Mayo and Conley isn't better???? MORONS!!!

May 20, 2008  11:37 PM ET

Ya...2nd guessing is okay guys....

May 21, 2008  06:16 PM ET

OJ Mayo? He's horribly overrated. Conley is too much of a project, and that trade wouldn't work money-wise either.

May 21, 2008  10:43 PM ET

Forgot about Michael Redd. Fack

May 22, 2008  10:12 PM ET

Got that in with 1 minute to spare. I thought they sent me a Time Running Out FM. Way to go, FanNation. Good thing I checked.

Actually I think the Caves pick Chris Douglas Roberts (Memphis) PF. He's a great ball handler (Ambidexstrous) and can shoot with either hand. He also proved that he can hit from the perimeter as well so he's a triple threat as a outside shooter, inside shooter and can assist to the open hands.

Trade any you have to. Keep as your core Veraleo, West, Gibson, LBJ and Roberts. They can fill out the supporting cast from whomever they get and who is left over.
