I will remind everyone I did not choose the topic for this TD.

Dennis Eckersley (1992)

To begin with, he was a pitcher. Now, pitchers rarely win the MVP unless they have an outstanding season. The thing is, Eckersley was a closer, a relief pitcher. Yes, he had 51 saves, but his 1.81 ERA was not a blow your mind away ERA, Joe Nathan, Papelbon, and other closers have had that ERA. And he didn't have a ton of strikeouts. 87 K in 80 innings. Yes, 51 saves is a lot, but it is not the most in a season. Yet he is the only relief pitcher to win the MVP award. A closer should not win the MVP unless he has over 50 saves, has an ERA under 1.00, and has around 1.5 times the number of strikouts than innings, and no blown saves. Eckersly has only the over 50 saves part down.

I will remind everyone I did choose this topic for the TD. This is a guy near and dear to all of our hearts, I hate to bash on an MVP, but this was a travesty.

1925 was the year and Roger Peckinpaugh was the MVP. You ask, WHO?

Lets delve into the season he had, shall we..... He hit .294 with 4 HR's and 64 RBI's. So you are saying I am sure his competition did even worse, right? Harry Heilmann led the league in average at .393 with 13 HR's and 134 RBI's. Bob Meausel led the league in HR's with 33 as well as RBI's with 138. So in total he was .99 behind the batting leader, 29 HR's behind the HR champ and 64 RBI behind the RBI champ. I can also tell you this he wasn't top 5 in any offensive category. He also was not known for his defense, as in that years world series he had 8 errors in 7 games.

I am sure Roger Peckinpaugh was a great player but an MVP he was not.

I will delve into Eck next.

Forfeited Turn

Eck was the most important player on the best team in the Al. He had a huge impact in over half of their wins. There was not a better closer in the game than him. He was dominant, and please list for me all the pitchers who have meet your 3 criteria in the history of baseball. Also strikeouts are nice but don't hold as much value as you say. Did he deserve the award, uh, I don't know.

I do know he deserved it a heck of alot more than Roger Peckinpaugh.

I will be out of town so probably will not be able to give a third and final arguement.

How many blown saves eh?

3. 51-3 is not a bad record.

The a's went 96-66 tied for best record in the league, and won the division by 6 games.

"Yet he is the only relief pitcher to win the MVP award."

Wrong. Rollie Fingers and Willie Hernandez both won the MVP award and CY Young award in the same season as relief pitchers.

Thanks CCC, I had not even looked into his arguement yet, just wanted to make mine. Short on time today.
