Top 5 pitchers ever. (List first, argue second and third)

1. Bob Feller
2. Cy Young
3. Nolan Ryan
4. Walter Johnson
5. Greg Maddux

1. Walter Johnson
2. Cy Young
3. Christy Mathewson
4. Grover Cleveland Alexander
5. Sandy Koufax

Forfeited Turn

Christy Mathewson-One of the few people willing to speak out on the Black Sox scandal. 5 times led league in ERA. Lowest rate of walks in the league 7 times. Had a book written about him called 'The Celebrant'. Career winning percentage of .671. Averaged 312 innnings per season almost 100 innings more than the average pitcher of that era(1901-1915). His career ERA was 2.10 when the era average was 2.77. He won 22 games a year for 12 straight years!

Sandy Koufax-Recorded 2396 strikeouts in only short 11-year career!
Between 1961-66 went 129-47 leading the league in ERA 5 out of those 6 years. Won MVP of the league in 1963. Won 4 strikeout titles and 3 CY Young awards. Had two 18 strikeout games. Led Dodgers to NL crown in 63, 65, and 66 as their ace. Retired at age 30 due to arthritis, yet still elected to Hall of Fame in 1972.

Grover Cleveland-Won 373 games for garbage/average teams. One good team he played on in 1926 was the St. Louis Cardinals. He got the World Series clinching save that year. His career winning percentage was .647 yet the teams he played on had only a .533 career winning percentage. He pitched 80 innings a season above average and his ERA career=2.53

Bob Feller-266 and 2581 strikeouts despite missing probably his best 4 seasons due to military service. If you just add in a modest (for him) 20 wins a season and 200 Ks, then he would have had 346 wins and 3381 strikeouts, which would easily put him as one of the best pitchers ever. Also threw 3 no hitters, 14 one-hitters, and was known to throw at least 100 mph. He was a legend.

Nolan Ryan-No respect at all. 5714 career Ks! More than 1000 more than second place! He also threw a ridiculous 7 no-hitters, by far the most all time. Won 324 games, and played for a whopping 27 seasons, being very effective in all of them. How is he not one of the greatest pitchers ever.

Greg Maddux-I saw some comments saying Roger Clemens was better. Have you guys been under a rock since December? Maddux has 350 wins, 3300 career strikeouts, won 15 games or more for 17 straight seasons, and all this pitching against players built like houses. In an era where hitting stats ran wild, Greg Maddux put up Dead-Ball era like numbers. Career 3.12 ERA too, what's not to like? And has he EVER been accused of steroids? Maybe the best finesse pitcher ever.

I am going to let my case rest on my list and justifications above.

Nolan Ryan? Ouch.

Ryan is a borderline top 20 pitcher of all-time. He's not even close to being in the top 5.

Report Offensive Comment

Fake bigdleech, wow, get a life.

Ryan has more no hitters than everyone put together on both lists. He was dominant in his 20's and his 40's.Hes among all time k leaders, hes not top five mine are-Bob Gibson,Greg Maddux,Sandy Kofax,Walter Johnson and Young.Young did have 511 wins, but he did lose over 300 games.Wj is alltime leader in shutouts, way ahead of anyone else.

I wouldn't put Maddux in the top 5 all time. ONly because I'd put Clemens ahead of him.

Way skewed TD. Baseball TD's almost always come down to stats because most people don't have the first clue about the differing era's in baseball and think you can compare a Cy Young to a Roger Clemens simply by looking at their stat sheets. Cass will win this in a landslide because she took mostly dead ball era pitchers and is going to shine in the stats department. Though, Nolan Ryan is definitely a head scratcher from the left. So is Maddux, for that matter. Pedro was better than either of them, so was Rocket.

"Ryan has more no hitters than everyone put together on both lists."

So what? No-Hitters are a matter of LUCK, much more than skill. Yeah, it helps if you can throw the ball through a brick wall, but not necessary.

Having only one would be considered lucky. Pitching is not about luck, its SKILL!

I don't really understand why people are downplaying Greg Maddux's accomplishments. The man has 350 career wins in an era when 20 win seasons are hard to come by. Maddux was not the most exciting pitcher to watch but he was every bit as dominant as the other greats. His 271 ERA+ in 1994 was the fourth highest ever. In 1995, he had a 262 ERA+ which was the fifth highest ever. Pedro doesn't come close to Maddux's longevity. Clemens had a better career then Maddux mostly due to his mysterious renaissance after he left Boston. Maddux is vastly underrated if people think he isn't even close to being a top 5 pitcher.

Walter Johnson
Christy Mathewson
Cy Young

Those 3 have to be in the top 5, the other 2 spots are debateable but Nolan Ryan isn't in it....I would have a hard time believing Nolan Ryan in the top 15 let alone top 5....just way to inconsistent....

Good catch Nick....didn't realize this is a fake bigdleech....

I thought leech went crazy.....Ryan in the top 5?

1. Why in the hell would you steal another user's identity?
2. Why in the hell would you put Nolan Ryan in the Top 5?
3. Why in the hell would you put Bob Feller at #1 overall?
4. Why in the hell have four people actually voted for you?

the Ryan love is almost as big as Madden's love for Favre.....

Report Offensive Comment

Favre is the only player in NFL history to win three consecutive MVPs. He was deserving of the praise. Ryan averaged 12 wins a year, walked a ton of batters and never won a Cy Young. The man had more style then substance.

Report Offensive Comment

Angelos - not saying the Favre love isn't warranted, just comparing the amount/size of the love...

Report Offensive Comment

Imitating another user? Wow that's pathetic.

Report Offensive Comment

Maddux has over 350 wins and has done it clean.. as far as we know. You gotta list him..

Report Offensive Comment

Nolan Ryan wasn't even the best pitcher of his era, Carlton, Palmer and Seaver were all better.

Report Offensive Comment

Is it just Cassidy-hatred that's keeping this so close? I can't think of any other reasons.
