If the MLB season ended TODAY, your American League MVP should be Josh Hamilton

Here is what I know about what Josh has done for his Rangers team to keep them within 5 games of the AL West lead without much help offensively or defensively(pitching):

He leads the American League with 51 RBIs

He has at least 5 RBIs every week of the season to date.

He has hit a HR in every week but one(11 total), second most in the league

His on base average+slugging percentage is an amazing .974

He is in the top 10 in runs scored(30)

He LEADS the AL in hits(63)

He leads the AL by far in total bases(115)

He is second in the AL in batting average(.328)

He leads the AL in extra base hits(27)

Without Josh, the Texas Rangers would be in the basement, having a season like Seattle, Detroit, or San Diego to name a few of the worst.

With Josh, they are simply outscoring people thanks to his explosive numbers.

The Rangers dont have a pitcher in the top ten in ERA, Saves, Innings Pitched, Hits Allowed, or strikeouts.

Josh has almost twice as many RBIs(52) as the next closest guy on his team, David Murphy(31).

Josh has a slugging percentage of at an amazing .599!

If Andre Dawson can win an MVP for a last place Cubs team in 1987, lets look @ Josh

Look at it this way, the MVP has come from a playoff team in the AL. The last one to win the MVP and his team miss the cut was A-Rod in 2003

Im going with Kevin Youkilis

Yes, Youk has 6 less hits (57) than Hamilton (63) but he has also had 14 less atbats (192-178).

And look at the XBHs. Youkilis has the same about (27) in his 14 less at bats.

Youk also gets on base at a higher rate than Hamilton. Youk's OBP is .386 and Ham's is .375.

And you have to know what Youk means to the Sox. He is keeping them alive when Papi has been struggling. And they are in first and if the MLB season ended TODAY, they would be in the playoffs

also, another player to consider is..

Cliff Lee
Cliff is tied for 2nd in wins with 6 and only one win behind the leaders while pitching one less games than them.
He is #1 in ERA with a lights out 1.37 ERA
He is also #1 in the AL in shutouts.
He is also in the top 10 in K's in the AL.
He has the 3rd best Win% in the AL (pitched one less game than Joe Saunders)
His opponents are batting .202 against him. That is barely past the Mendoza line.
He leads the MLB in K/BB. He has 9.20 while the #2 guy has 5.70
He is also #4 in the AL in H/9

Y did A-Rod get the MVP despite missing the playoff cut? Gee, I am going out on a limb and say it was because he had the best INDIVIDUAL season & that is exactly what Josh Hamilton has done 2 date. He leads Kevin Youkilis n virtually every ind. offensive category there is & he should not be punished in the least for not playing for the Red Sox nor should Youkilis benefit by playing for a better team when the question here is: an individual award(last place wasnt precluding Dawson in 1987 from the ultimate consideration).

The more amazing Josh Hamilton is getting all these hits and production with inferior talent around him. Lets look at who bats ahead of Josh: Ian Kinsler and Michael Young. Who protects him? Milton Bradley.

Now lets look at who is on base consistently in front of Youkilis who bats much further down the order(thus the less at bats): Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowell. Protecting Youkilis way down in the 7 hole is JD Drew who is hitting .290, 4 HR, and 22 RBI. Not bad to have this guy behind you as a 7th hitter!

You gottta stop whining about the less at bats when its obvious a 6(Youkilis) cant get the at bats of a #3 hitter(Josh).

Forfeited Turn

This is my second TD in a row where my arguments have rendered an opponent speechless. Nice.

I congratulate you in capitalizing on my arguing blunder by coming back with a mind blowing argument to put your TD win in the bag.

Obviously, unlike you, I have a social life and i cannot make my schedule around when my TD arguments are due.

Yes, maybe A-rod did win the MVP in 2003 by being the best player, but, maybe the fact that his stats blew out every AL hitter in 2003. That is what put him higher than the Playoff and +.500 teams.

The closest player to A-rod in 2003 in the AL was Frank Thomas.

A-Rod
181 hits
47 HRs
118 RBIs
17 SBs
.298 BA

Frank-
146 hits
42 HRs
105 RBIs
0 SBs
.267 BA

2003 Blue Jays- 86-76
2003 Rangers- 71-91

When the numbers are all in favor of one player on a losing team, its his. But, when they are close like in the case of Youkilis and Hamilton, it goes to Youk because of his team's record.

MVP=Most Valuable Player. How can a player be MOST VALUABLE when his team is scraping at the bottom of the division?

Try to keep your hormones in check on this one this time dude.

May 22, 2008  03:25 PM ET

dude have i faced you before. sorry lol good luck mah dude

May 22, 2008  03:27 PM ET

actually sorry i cant take this because i agree with you 100%

May 22, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Who wouldnt? Oh, hello LSU..........you must be the one.

May 22, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Well, I did my research and your completly right, I have no argument against you so I'm not gonna take this one. He's in the top 3 in the AL in Batting AVG., HR, RBI's, and H. Your getting an easy win here.

May 22, 2008  03:45 PM ET

I feel an Oriole MVP coming on and I didnt even call Miss Cleo.

May 22, 2008  03:48 PM ET

i almost took this too. easily josh hamilton. the only other candidate he can really choose is Kevin Youkilis and he only beats Hamilton in BA and doubles but is close in everything else. Hamilton though becuase of triples....gives him an edge and slugging %.

May 22, 2008  03:50 PM ET

Hamilton has been the best player. Must have been tough to decide who to argue for.

But MVP has that pesky "value" component- it's not just the guy with the best numbers.

If the "season ended today" the Rangers still wouldn't be anywhere close to the playoffs. I'm not sure that finishing in third is so much better than finishing in fourth. Is a guy really so valuable if he and his team are still watching the post-season on TV?

May 22, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Kevin Youkilis has like 30 less at bats also

May 22, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Don't make it look all fancy shmancy. Just get to the point and make a better comparison of Doubles and Triples. Just say "Extra Base Hits" because some players get their triples off of speed and players like Prince Fielder and David Ortiz who can hit the ball well enough don't get the triple, however they get the extra bases. So I think that is how it should be looked at, and not as 2 individual statistics.

May 22, 2008  03:54 PM ET

No sh it shurlock, how'd you figure that out?

May 22, 2008  03:55 PM ET

I got a job interview so I will check back on this later. Dont worry, I am not applying for asst. shmancy manager.

May 22, 2008  04:07 PM ET

This also is very hard to argue considering Hamilton leads in just about every offensive category

I'm not keeping track of this, so I'm not venturing an opinion. I have OTHER things to worry about today. (You all might want to read my ONLY blog of the day...it explains ITSELF!!!)

good argument for youk....dont like the cliff lee one thuhg...he has pitched agianst 2 last place teams, and 3 second to last place teams...the competetion he has faced thus far has been mediocre to below average

May 23, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Normally agree about playoff team but Cass has a damn good argument

im goin with cass

He is the MVP, but to say he gets no help is ridiculous.
Bradley is batting .327, Blalock .300, Murphy and Kinsler are both right around .295. They have the 2nd best team BA and OB%. He gets PLENTY of help.
