This is the series many have hoped for.
The absolute BEST from the West and 1st overall Red Wings versus the 2nd seed Pens from the East.
Who will win?
The Detroit Red Wings who also hold HOME ICE advantage!

Overall differences between the two. 1st the Wings have experiece on their side as many have been to the dance before. Most notably, Nick Lidstrom, the Wings Captain and best defenceman in the entire NHL. Nick's age has not hindered his performance this year as he is once again favoured to win the Norris Trophey, his 6th & one more than Ray Bourque.

However, unlike the Penguins, Detroits defense is deep and goes far beyond the single stud that the Pens have in Gonchar.
Experienced blueliners Brian Rafalski & Niklas Kronwall* (leading all defencemen in points in the playoffs) support Lidstrom to a tee.

The Wings early stumble over the Preds was rectified with Osgood replacing Hasek in Net where he went onto 9 straight victories, including a sweep of the Aves before losing game 4 to the Stars 3-1 & 2-1. The Wings rebounded in gm 6 to eliminate the Stars 4gms to 2 with a 4-1 Victory in Dallas. The Stars, a fast team coming off wins vs the Cup Champs & Sharks.

Home ice would only matter for the Wings if Pittsburgh needed a 7th game to win and they were a bad road team, neither of which is true.

Experienced is overrated. The Edmonton Oilers of the 80s were a young bunch who won Cups. Look at how the Superbowl-virgin Giants took out the Patriots, a much more seasoned postseason bunch, in the big game.

Lets get a quote from the Red Wings Dallas Drake discussing the Penguins young roster: ???They???re a young, energetic team. They???re going to have a tremendous amount of energy. But that???s just the way the league is now; the better players are all younger.??? Thats right folks, the best players in this league are younger, not older and wiser. This is a young-man's speed game ala Crosby and Ovenchkin-dominated.

Plus, Detroit's best goal scorer this postseason, Johan Franzen, is out for game 1, which is a much bigger loss to the Wings in the pivitol opener than it is for them to be on home ice. Who cares if Wings fans toss an octopuss onto the ice before the game? Surely one of the Penguins defensemen will pick it up for a pregame snack, sashimi style.

If Dallas and Nashville can take two from Detroit, Pitt can take 4 and Cup.

Home ice my dear Cassidy, means that the Pens play the first 2 games in the Joe.
Home ice advantage means there is an an advantage for the Home Team...on Every Face Off, Every Final Line change for match ups & bench vacinity. Oh yeah...then there is the home crowd thing.
The Wings have a puck possesion game, they have the BEST faceoff percentage in the Playoffs and the Pens have been weak all season on the draw.
Starting with the puck is a clear advantage for the Wings.
To use YOUR example & is an excellent one, The Oilers of 82-83. They won the regular season championship, shattered scoring records & were without a doubt more talented then this years Penguins.
However, in their 1ST...Note 1ST FINAL for the Stanley Cup against an inferior talent but with much more "overrated experience" The NYI defeated the YOUNG Oilers, a 4 STRAIGHT game sweep!

Your Dallas Drake quote is in reference to his retirement. Lets not take it out of context. Additionally, Datsyuk & Zetterberg are not exactly grey beards & both are point leaders in the Playoffs with Zetterberg #1. Both these guys are also Selke candidates. That means best defensive forwards.
See a theme...
Team Defence!
more.

Well considering the Dallas Stars can win at the Joe, we all know Pittsburgh can win there. Its not like the Joe sells out anymore anyways. We may see one third of the fans in black and yellow.

I know what home advantage is, no need for an explanation of one of the most fundamental things in sports. Here is the rub though: Pittsburgh is too young and confident to even give a whip where the F they are playing. They treated Madison Square Garden and the Wachovia Center like their personal training grounds, winning in both places so some banJoe isnt going to have any Penguins skaters losing their edges.

If you want to talk about why the Wings are so good at faceoffs, why dont we ask the Stars who say the Wings cheat by going in motion before the puck drops. See story here:
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/50999?eref=sircrc

The Wings will need all the advantages they can get just to balance out the speed deficit that will have them chasing the Pens all over the ice all series.

While you guys are standing in your own zone defending your goal with that defense, Pittsburgh will be peppering Osgood with enough shots to score goals. Goals win games.

You discount how good Dallas was. They beat the defending champs & the 2nd best team in the NHL!
In the 2 Dallas wins, Turco had to stop 71 shots!
Franzen missed that series but is expected back for this one soon.

Osgood leads the playoffs in G.A.A!
The Wings avg.36 SPG & 23 SA. The Pens avg.32 SPG & 28 SA.
The Wings limit teams to parameter shots & clear rebounds.
The Pens have not faced anything close to this level of foe yet!
The Wings roll 3 good lines & have 6 solid D-men & the team is pretty healthy. Something else the Pens are unaccustomed to.

The Sens were a joke, NYR weaker & injured & the Flyers D was completely decimated. Hatcher was their #1 guy!

Experience does matter. Ask Gretzky.
This is the Cup Final!
Nerves are jittery, players over hype, adversity happens & we have already seen that Malkin & Crosby can be shaken with just a little adversity in N.Y & Philly. The have also been held pointless in 2 gms. That proves they can be stopped!

The Wings don't stand still!
They are a FAST transition team that controls the puck & has teams chase them. They will screen Fleury & attack from everywhere.
Babcock is the Best coach.
Pens have met their match!

What I do know is Dallas is not as good as Det & Pitt is. What Dallas accomplished @ the Joe & having taken 2 games from the Wings overall tells me that the Pens can do twice as good. Its not a matter of discounting the Stars, its the easy math considering the new variables.

Turco had 2 stop all those shots bcuz the defense in front of him wasnt playing all that good. Without Franzen the Wings shouldnt have been peppering Marty with that many shots! Unfortunately, guys like Zubov were more concerned about pressing the issue than protecting their blue line. The Penguins are a much more disciplined bunch with their offense resulting in a collapsing defense similiar 2 what we saw from the early 90s New Jersey Devils.

Thats funny how u listed Osgood as leading n Goals Against Average(GAA), by only .1 over the Penguins goalie Fleury by the way, but FAIL 2 mention who LEADS THE PLAYOFFS n (a) Save Percentage-Fleury (b) Wins-Fleury (c) Shutouts-Fleury. Of the 4 most important stats for goaltenders, the PENGUINS goalie leads in 3 out of 4.

You say the Penguins opponents were jokes. Maybe that might explain why the Pens rolled thru them.

Nobody skates faster than Pens

Good Luck Cassidy...

May 23, 2008  05:33 PM ET

this should be a good one

May 23, 2008  08:14 PM ET

Good luck Baun-ded.....my last argument will be tomorrow. Have a great night.

May 23, 2008  08:18 PM ET

It goes 7; the Pens win. Vote went right.

May 23, 2008  08:40 PM ET

Hopefully that argument will come early...before game time.

May 23, 2008  08:43 PM ET

Nice to see "voters" waiting for arguments...

May 23, 2008  08:51 PM ET

I'm going to wait for final arguments... however...

I have a few problems with the argument to the right. First, using a "Truth & Rumor" link is hardly verifiable evidence. If the Wings were indeed guilty of such indiscretions, and were there substantial evidence to take action, the NHL would already have taken steps toward punishing Detroit... so the words of the vanquished aggrieved (Dallas) are hardly to be construed as concrete proof of indiscretion inre: Detroit & faceoffs...

So far, none of the arguments regarding experience have been refuted; in fact, the Datsyuk/Zetterberg argument has also gone completely untouched, so it should carry over in favor of the left...

As I said, waiting for final arguments but so far leaning left (no matter what my own predictions say on the matter)...

May 23, 2008  09:04 PM ET

The home ice clarification was not necessarily for you Cassidy. Several folks that do not follow hockey may not be aware of what the NHL rules are concerning home ice. I was simply trying to be informative for those that might not know who are reading the arguments. Several people on here are not overly familiar with hockey you know. Besides your comment about home ice was in fact mis-leading to readers. Which is why I clarified it.

May 23, 2008  09:27 PM ET

i have to wait for final arguments before i can vote

May 23, 2008  09:34 PM ET

Wings will win

May 23, 2008  10:50 PM ET

Crosby and Malkin will prove too much for the Wings. Pens in 6.

May 23, 2008  10:52 PM ET

The Wings may have better d-men,but Pitts. plays a better defensive game. Their 1.86 G.A.A is a play-off low.

May 23, 2008  10:54 PM ET

The Winga have been averaging a play-off low of 22 shots per game.........i seriously doubt that they can hold Pitts. to that average.

May 24, 2008  12:47 AM ET

bostongm...The Wings are not just a defensive team...as you will note from my arguments, they also lead in shooting at the other team. Regarding your other comment...Malkin & Crosby have been shut down which you will also see in my arguments. As well as the level of competition the Pens have met so far is nothing to what the Red Wings have. All also stated in the above argument.

May 24, 2008  01:57 AM ET

Their average shots for is 37. Against is 22 shots. To be exact.

May 24, 2008  01:59 AM ET

The Pens average 32 shots for,and 28 shots against.

May 24, 2008  03:39 AM ET

Wings win, but a close series with close games. Wings defensive forwards being the diference.

May 24, 2008  07:50 AM ET

bostonsg. So fine then...your're saying the Wings are even better than I did for and against.

May 24, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Wings in seven. Offense wins games, but defense wins championships and Detroit's defense is deeper and better than Pittsburgh's. Voting Left.

May 24, 2008  10:52 AM ET

damn, very good arguments, i cant vote in this one, too close
