Jason has gotte the short end of the stick and I believe it is time for him to get out of Miami. New coach, Tony Saprano called out Taylor for not atteneding camp (not a great way to start things coach) and now Miami did this to themselves.

Thanks to Saprano's mouth things are more fragile than before. To Jason's credit he hasn't acted like Chad Johnson or Brian Urlacher being in terms of not attending camp and he has bee basically everything owner, Wayne Huizenga has asked for out of his players off the field it can't get much better than that right? Jason has had a great run with Dolphins but, he is also getting on in years and would like to find a team that would most likely get to the Super Bowl in the next 2-3 years. Jason isn't going to find that in Miami, it is at least going to take Miami a while longer to get to the Super Bowl and with the Coach's great speech, that has even made Taylor and Miami's relationship more "messed up." Taylor may want to stay (although I'm not so sure after this) however he just really needs to get out of Miami.

I'm going to tell you a story.

Many years ago, one of the NFL's best defensive players was coming off of his greatest season. His team had made the playoffs the season before, and had made it all the way to the Super Bowl a few years before.

This particular season, however, turned out to be one of the worst in franchise history. Our defensive end was still productive, but it seemed that nothing else on the team was working. They struggled to a 4-12 season, and our defensive end was very disgruntled.

"I want out" said the defensive end. "I want a chance to win a Super Bowl".

It wasn't to be, however. He had just signed a huge extension, and his team couldn't take the cap hit were they to trade him. Instead, he just stayed put, and the team rebuilt their defense around him. The next season, after a solid draft, his team was improved, but not that much...they finished 6-10.

The team got better fast, though. After this losing season, they started a run of 3 straight playoff seasons. At the end of the 3rd, they won one of the greatest Super Bowl victories of all time, with our star defensive end being a key contributor at age 36.

Who am I talking about?

Uhhh let me think..................

Look, I'm not interested in playing Trivia Pusuit, I'm sick of it now... I get the moral of the story though.

However the Coach called Taylor out, condemn him as if some sort of parasite that they can stand to see anymore (and that also has affected trade offers just throwing that out there). Miami knows that Taylor is a great defensive player they can hopefully build around but, calling him out like that didn't really help make things better and Taylor hasn't really officially said he wants out but, that calling out certainly didn't help the team's relationship with Jason.

And did I also mention there really is no stable QB (sound familiar)? Even though they got a good draft pick and have made some changes for good, probably it will take a while before we see the Dolphins in the Super Bowl.

I was talking about Strahan, of course.

To me, Taylor is in a good situation in Miami. He is there with a new staff and a young team who needs veteran leadership, which is exactly what he should be providing. There is no reason to think he can't be effective 3-4 years down the line (as Strahan has been), at which point this team very well could be a playoff contender again. In the near term, he remains one of the best defensive players in the NFL, clearly a player that a defense can be built around.

I think there is also something to be said for athletes who make the decision to stay with one team their entire careers. Taylor is playing for a legendary franchise, for which he has put up (to this point at least) a Hall of Fame career. If I were in his position, I would do my best to help rebuild this team, which would cement my status as a legendary player on a legendary team, instead of just cutting and running.

That said, if Taylor wants to really help this team, he needs to get his head out, take charge as a leader, and show the young players how a classy veteran performs.

If he can't do that, he shouldn't be playing in the NFL anymore.

I agree with you that he is there with a young staff and a young team who needs veteran leadership and yes he is playing for a lengendary team but, you can't just look at thing like that either. There are the little things that are factoring in also.
I'm sure everyone would like to see Taylor stay especially the fan base but, Miami is beginning to alienate Taylor; First, if they somehow want Taylor around (again, that seems impossible to believe at this point), what Sparano said only alienates the Dolphins from their best player. Second, if the Dolphins want to trade Taylor, they have only decreased his value by making it appear they don???t want him.
Off the field, Taylor has been everything that Huizenga has asked of players. In short, Taylor has more than held up his end of the bargain as a member of the Dolphins.
Yes, he wants out right now. But at 33, after having missed the playoffs for the past six years and facing another rebuilding project, Taylor isn???t asking for something completely unfair. Finally, to Taylor???s credit, he never has acted like Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens, trashing a franchise as he tried to get out. Taylor has tried to exit quietly.

Personally, I think Sparano has every right to feel aggreived. This is an unproven head coach taking over a 1-15 team. He's working under intense media scrutiny, not to mention the watchful eye of a legendary NFL coach.

At the least, Sparano deserves the right effort from his best veteran player. Instead, Taylor has spent his time on TV (not that big of a deal) and lied outright about his attendance of OTAs (a much bigger deal to me). He hasn't stepped into the role of a leader as he should have, choosing instead to take his ball and go home.

The reason I brought up the Strahan comparison is that Strahan was in the exact same position a few years ago. Instead of pressing his desire to leave (by not showing up to OTAs, etc), Strahan buckled down, took the defense under his wing, and rededicated his effort to get his team to the Super Bowl.

End result? The Giants developed a couple of superstar young defensive ends, won a Super Bowl due in large part to the play of their defensive ends, and more or less ensured Strahan's Hall of Fame entrance someday.

Why isn't Taylor willing to do this?

To who ever accepts I will probably not make my next arguement until tomorrow.

i agree with you on this one cowace...Taylor should be looking to stay, Miami looks to be heading in the right direction and fast...

Real Sports has the wrong story. He's talking as if Jason Taylor is the victim. Actually, the problem is that Taylor has decided that his stupid "Dancing w/ the Stars" hobby is more important than his EXTREMELY HIGH PAYING/HIGH DEMANDING JOB. I'd lose my job if I decided to take a sabbatical when I know I'm not supposed to, why should Taylor be treated differently when there is so much money invested in him?

I agree with you Lifer, Taylor chose what he wanted to do. It's a shame these mini-camps aren't mandatory. For the amount of money he gets from the Dolphins, he sure has his priorities messed up. I think he's doing this on purpose because he wants to go to a contender and he's the one trying to force a trade.

I find it hard to sympathize with any player who signs a long term deal, then decides to back out when things don't go his way. Taylor, less time learning how to mambo, more time spent working on your spin moves.

May 25, 2008  02:08 AM ET

On the court spin moves, of course.

And by court I mean field. Damn, too much basketball lately. haha

Tony Saprano is a character on a made for cable television series. Tony SPARANO is the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

That out of the way, who CARES what Jason Taylor wants? He signed the damn contract, live with it or retire. Miami will trade him if and ONLY if they get fair market return, which is quite a lot for a guy who was the defensive player of the year just 2 years ago. He's not helping his trade value by staying away from OTA's, BTW. Parcells doesn't give players away and he sure isn't going to give Jason Taylor away.

Want to play football? Get your **** to the OTA's and prove it to the new regime. Want to go hollywood? Send your retirement papers into the NFL and pay back the pro-rated bonus money. Either way, Fing primma donnas like this can NOT be allowed to dictate their own future and a hard **** like Parcells sure as hell isn't going to let him.

Well, I think it will be interesting to see the outcome of this Taylor vs. Miami Battle.

May 25, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Good story but no argument

I agree with Lifer and AdamLee. Taylor is not the victim, and I find it hard to sympathize with him. He needs to play through his contract. End of story. Don't punk out of something you frickin' SIGNED and AGREED to. No love for Taylor here. He needs to be a man of his word and man up and play some dang football.
