My selection is France. They not only have the most talented team in the tournament, but they have excellent team chemistry to go along with that.
They were also the runners up in the 2006 Fifa World Cup, a tournament they should have won if Zidane didn't deliver that headbutt. The defining factor in this team is the infusion on youth and experience, a key factor for Champions League winners Manchester United on their way to the title.
They have a veteran keeper in Gregory Coupet who provides superb leadership and is a rock in front of net. The back four of Gallas, Mexes, Sagnol, and Abidal/Evra is argubly the best in the world.
Superb defensive midfielder Claude Makelele ties the fine midfield together while German Bundesliga player of the year Frank Ribery and the likes of Florent Malouda and Samir Nasri (new Zidane) fly down the flanks.
But what strikes fear into the heart of Europe is the deadly attacking combination of veteran Thierry Henry with the most coveted youngster in Europe, Karim Benzema.
This is a long tournament and to be backed up by Vieira, Anelka, Flamini, Ben Arfa, and Toulalan shows the depth, experience, and quality of this incredible side.

Well, I'm going to go with the very team that beat your now-Zidane-less France team. You can't call Nasri a new Zidane, because Zidane was centrally-located on the pitch whilst Nasri is more of a wing-oriented player.
Gianluigi Buffon in goal is still the best in the world, going from the first game to the last game in the '06 World Cup and not allowing a goal between them.
Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi (more than a punching bag), and Gianluca Zambrota help form a formidable back line.
Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, and Mauro Camoranesi make for a talented midfield in attack and defense.
Alessandro Del Piero and Luca Toni round out the team's key players, Del Piero in a supporting role as a second striker, and Toni as the main striker, who can use his size, speed, and strength to get himself space in the box.
As for it being a "long tournament", it's actually one round shorter than the World Cup, which Italy didn't have too many problems winning in 2006.
While the Italian side may not be as deep as the French side, only 11 players take the pitch at once, and the top 11 is where the Italians have the Frenchmen beat.
jeevs BS said 05/26, 07:54 PM
I would seriously refute your points.
First of all, a Zidane-less France may be a better France with the attack not being focused around one player, creating balance between the team and allowing different points of attack and different players creating for others.
Having played with Zidane all tournament long, they didn't know what to do without him once he got sent off. That problem will not occur anymore, and players such as Nasri, Ribery, and Ben Arfa can create.
The biggest problem with the Italian team is that they are all old names living on past glory, they have little young talent and most of their players are no where near as good as they once were.
Cannavaro has been absolutley terrible for Real Madrid since the World Cup, Zambrotta has lost considerable pace, and Camoranesi's mobility down the flank has been slowed.
At 33, Del Piero also has lost pace, which will provide difficulty outside of the Italian league in different styles of play, and Toni is also very slow, causing problems. And don't forget, Italy's top striker Francesco Totti retired after the world cup.
Italy are not as good as the team that won the world cup, while France are better now.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 05/27, 02:27 AM
The attack of France not being focused around one player is a bad thing? Didn't Manchester United just win the Champion's League through Christiano Ronaldo? You say this also as if Zidane was NEVER used as a decoy. The man drew the defense to him every time he had the ball, it's always a bad thing to lose a player of his stature.
Old names living on past glory? Pretty sure the same was said about the Italians before the World Cup 06 and they went and only gave up two goals in the entire tournament.
No way, there's no way that the France team fielded now is better than the one with a younger Coupet, Zidane, and Trezeguet was two years ago.
As for the French not being able to play sans Zidane, HE ACTUALLY MISSED A PREVIOUS WORLD CUP MATCH! He'd acquired two yellow cards against Switzerland and South Korea respectively, and was forced to sit out the match between France and Togo.
After that, Zidane proceeded to have a foot in the next five goals scored for France, one setting up Vieira, one himself, one to Henry, and the second and third himself via penalty kick. You're trying to say that the French will be better without the man who's face once graced l'Arc de Triomphe?
jeevs BS said 05/27, 05:15 PM
First of all, Ronaldo and Zidane are totally different players. Ronaldo scores great goals for being in the right place at the right time and playing off others who create for him. Zidane is the creator, playmaker for the old France, and since there was only one, unlike with United's many playmakers, their attack was based around him.
The fact is, now, they have more players who do what Zidane did, creating balance from the team and multiple points of attack, which is deadly. Ribery, Nasri, Benzema, and others draw defenses like Zidane did. Many of these palyers weren't there in the World Cup.
In 06, Cannavaro came in as a fine defender, Zambrotta had pace, and Materazzi was solid. Coming into this tourney, the defense isn't that good, and without totti and faster forwards, neither is the offense. In 06, they were old, but still had pace and form.
Whoa, he sat out against TOGO! France could beat them with reserves.
Trezegeut didn't score in 06, and can't play well in France's new scheme, there is a reason he was overlooked. Two years for goalies makes little difference.
But this side has Benzema, the top scorer in France, Nasri, Flamini, Ben Arfa, etc. unlike 06.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 05/27, 07:37 PM
You know what, it doesn't matter who he sat out against, France still had to play all of their other starters, that's 90 minutes of game time they'd had without him previously.
Trezeguet isn't a deep-lying striker, his job was as much to set up Henry and others as it was to put the ball in the net himself, he and Del Piero are quite similar in role.
As for the Ronaldo comparison, they're both midfielders, not strikers, and all facets of the offensive game go through them, be it directly or indirectly. Defenses constantly have to have at least one man marked on him at all times if not two, creating holes for others to exploit.
Did I mention that Buffon's the best goalkeeper in the world?

I donno if i should vote.... I dont think either will win, actually, I think one of these teams wont even make it out of their group. But between these two, France is definitely more talented and many of Italy's main stays such as Pirlo, Gattusso, Canavarro and Zambrotta had poor and tired looking seasons for their clubs. Del Piero and Toni are coming off hot seasons, but neither are young. I'm looking forward to seeing if Cassanno plays a key role.
Anyways, my arguments for Spain in short would have been... best forward partnership in Europe, most talented and deep midfield, very physical defense, Iker Casillas.

Between these two, I would say France but I am putting all my money on Portugal. I think Cristiano and the boys finally win this one. Plus, after losing to Greece in 2004 in the finals I think they are determined to win.

Nasri isn't the new Zidane. Let him actually do something on a bigger stage then Ligue 1 before we proclaim him that.

we have 5 players to replace what zidane did from different point of the field. zidane was great, but we dont need him anymore, becasue balance can be even more deadly

A good ThrowDown usually has a dozen little tiny things that catch the voters eyes and this one caught mine. jeevs dove into this one head first by picking France, He already had the better team and only needed a good argument to win. Thehemogoblin you did well in your counter arguments minus the third one. Everyone is aware of Buffon's Goalkeeper prowess. But he's given up 205 career goals.......he can be scored on. Your third argument may have been your demise with alot of space stating the obvious. With the score already 14-6, I'm not seeing a need for me to cast a vote. It would be a token gesture at best and I really don't want to vote against either one of you anyway. Good TD you guys.
