Ok Hemo here we go,

You say that Jason Elam doesn't have a chance at the NFL Hall of Fame. But here is why he will make it in EASILY!

-Elam holds the NFL record for the longest kick in history with a 63 yarder

-Fastest player to 1,600 and 1,700 points.

-Elam's 51 yarder in SB XXXII is the second longest in Super Bowl History

-Best extra point percentage in NFL history!

-Elam holds the NFL record for most points scored by any player for one team EVER!

-Holds NFL record for most consecutive extra points made

-His 4 game winning field goals last year was the most by any kicker in over 17 years

-15 seasons with at least 100 points, only player to EVER do that, and he did it in 15 consecutive years.

-Not that rings matter for a kicker, but Elam has 2.

So as I see it Elam is one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, scores more than any kicker in NFL history, and has a stronger leg than any kicker in NFL history. How exactly is he NOT going to Canton?

George Blanda.

Lou Groza.

Jan Stenerud.

The three men who made the Pro Football Hall of Fame as kickers.

Blanda held the all-time point record, the games played record, and had an MVP as an AFL QB.

Groza was a 6-time all-NFL tackle, and has a rule named after him prohibiting the use of aids in kicking.

Stenerud was a pioneer of soccer-style kicking, and had seasons of infallible accuracy, hitting 70% of his field goals in the AFL when the league average was 50%, and in 1981 where he went 35 of 36.

However, Jason Elam doesn't have the credentials for the Hall of Fame.

He's only made three Pro Bowls:

Blanda has four
Groza has nine
Stenerud has six

He's never lead the league in field goal percentage:

Blanda did 3x
Groza did 5x
Stenerud did 4x

He's only led in field goals made one time

Blanda didn't ever
Groza did 6x
Stenerud did 3x

Elam only led extra points made one time

Blanda did 8x
Groza did 3x
Stenerud didn't ever

As for those longest kicks, Steve Christie and Tom Dempsey aren't in the Hall.

And no, Jason Elam's not the #1 all-time extra point kicker in accuracy with players who have at least five years of NFL service (which qualifies for NFL records), he's #6.

PLEASE tell me that you are not using Pro Bowls as a criteria for this. I mean no joke Jeff Garcia, Vince Young, and Mike Vick are all "Pro Bowlers". That is a popularity contest, and at times not even a good one.

Now on to Elam's case.

Since 2 of your 3 kickers played other positions, lets go "Apples to Apples" and see how Elam stacks up with Stenerud.

Stenerud's career numbers
295 for 447 (65.9%)- total Field Goals
458 for 478 (95.8%)- Extra Points
11 for 47 (23.4%)- 50+ yard FG's
64 for 126 (50.8%)- 40-49 yd FG's

Elam
395 for 490 (80.6%)- Total Field Goals
601 for 604 (99.5%) Extra Points
31 for 61 (50.8%)- 50+ yard FG's
98 for 153 (64.1%)- 40-49 yd FG's

Stenerud IS in the Hall of Fame, and sure he made a Pro Bowl, or led the league one year (which matters more on the team you play for than it does with you ability), but the bottom line is that Stenerud IS NOT BETTER THAN ELAM IN A SINGLE STAT!

How do you let Stenerud in and leave Elam out?

Well, I'm sure that if Jan Stenerud had the advantage of the thin air of Mile High Stadium, his long distance kicking numbers would be a lot more attractive than they are now

Stenerud led the league two more times in made field goals, and you attempt to discredit that, but then you list off his extra points, and then you list off his Super Bowl rings

You may be comparing apples to apples, but Stenerud played in an era where trees had different soil. Compared to his contemporaries (players that were playing in the 60's or 70's for Stenerud), only Blanda and Nick Lowery have him beat for points. Meanwhile, Elam's relation to his contemporaries (players in the 1990s and 2000+) is 5th, behind Morten Andersen, Gary Anderson, Matt Stover and John Carney

The middle year of Stenerud's career, 1976, the field goal rate was a cool 59.5%, where Stenerud's career average is 10.4% higher than that. 2000, the middle year of Elam's career, the success rate was 79.7%, and his career average is 80.6%, a .9% increase

Also, there was a period where Jason Elam wasn't even doing kickoffs. A major handicap to a team with a strict roster size, having to carry another specialist solely to do kickoffs

So, you are saying that records aren't records?

When Ruth hit HR's he DESTROYED the competition, meanwhile Aaron was consistently better than the competition, should we take away Aaron's numbers?

Should Favre's record for consecutive games not matter b/c he has better equipment?

RECORDS ARE RECORDS! Doesn't matter where you play, if the other guys are pretty good, or garbage.

Elam didn't "crush" the competition, but you even admit that the competition WAS BETTER.

He has been a top kicker for 16 seasons.

Your guy's CAREER FG% was 65.9%, Elam's WORST year 72.2%

You wanted to compare...

M. Anderson, 10 more seasons than Elam, 758 more points, Elam has NEVER had less than 100 in a season, & is more accurate.
G. Anderson, 8 more seasons, 648 more points, again LESS Accurate
Stover, 3 more seasons, 36 more FG, & compare Stover's 13 career 50+ yard FG's to Elam's 31!
Carney, 3 more seasons, 26 more points.

Only thing you have that says that Elam has NOT been the best kicker over his time is that these guys played longer?

BOTTOM LINE, Elam has consistently played better than what has been required in the past to make the HOF.

In perspective, Ruth was still a better home run hitter, wasn't he? He hit more in an era where people hit less. Same thing applies here.

Elam's career percentage is right at the league average for his time. Only a 1 percent difference, whereas Stenerud's difference is a whopping 10.4 percent. There's no way you can deny that. No way. Stenerud dominated his era. Elam was just a player who had good talent that came to the NFL in an era where kicking was better.

You've also got to look at the teams that Elam played on. Denver's been a relative powerhouse (*sigh*) since Elam came into the league, he's only had two coaches, Wade Phillips and Mike Shanananananahan, the latter leading Denver to a .625 winning percentage and ranking in the top 10 in points 9 times in his 13 seasons in the Mile High City.

It's all about the team and the era for Elam. Look at how much more RELATIVE success that Stenerud had in his time than Elam in his, and look at how high scoring Shanahan's teams have been in Denver.

Also, Jan Stenerud was the first NFL player to use the soccer-style kicking method, a method that all 32 placekickers in the NFL use at this time, INCLUDING Jason Elam.

I think Elam will make it but based on arguments i like hemos

May 26, 2008  08:01 PM ET

I'll go right for now. But its close. I'll be watching.

May 26, 2008  08:44 PM ET

Dude... MARK MOSELY. Last (and best) straight-on kicker in the league.

May 26, 2008  08:46 PM ET

Morten Andersen will.

May 26, 2008  09:04 PM ET

Sometimes the kicker is the most valuable player on a team if the games is on the line, and Elam is top 3 all time kickers so vote left

May 26, 2008  09:20 PM ET

Vote left for now, but its really close. And Morten Anderson will not make the Hall of Fame.

May 26, 2008  11:48 PM ET

Sorry BS, MUCH better arguments right. I think Elam is in, but Hemo's arguments are case closed vote right.

May 26, 2008  11:56 PM ET

Elam doesn't hold the record for longest kick either... Matt Bryant hit a 64-yarder against the Eagles a couple years ago

May 26, 2008  11:58 PM ET

Actually, I believe he hit a 62 yard field goal. I know it wasn't 64.

May 26, 2008  11:59 PM ET

Johnny Elam still holds the record, dunno who lied to you

May 27, 2008  12:59 AM ET

OK, how in the HELL is BS LOSING here? That second argument should have forced a forfeit! Hemo brought up the HOF players already in thing and BS showed why Elam was BETTER.

May 27, 2008  01:02 AM ET

Sorry BS, MUCH better arguments right. I think Elam is in, but Hemo's arguments are case closed vote right.

J (Browns 19-0) Carbathlee | 05/26/08, 11:48 PM

really? when he compared straight kicker to kicker, ELAM had Stenerud's beat in every statistical category....and Stenerud's in the HOF...

May 27, 2008  01:04 AM ET

J(Browns) i guess if you didn't see BS second argument...then there is a good reason to wait for all arguments to be in place before voting...

waiting on hemos response...

65.9% on career FGs? A coin flip percentage for 40 yarders? How the F did Stenerud even get in in the first place? Vote left cuz if Jan is in, so should Jason.
