Broadway Joe Namath is still considered a Legend of Football. In his day he was a HUGE celebrity, showing up regularly on Carson, TV Shows, Dean Martin roasts, Commercials, and he even had his own sitcom. There is so much hoopla about him still today, that some geniuses here have even included him on the all time great QB List.

But if you look at his stats, the dude was average at best.

Career:

50% Completion Percentage
QB rating of 65 (Tavaris Jackson had a QB rating of 70 last season to give you an idea)
173 TD's vs. 220 INT's
140 Career Rushing Yards in 140 Career Games (1 yard per game avg.)

And don't tell me about his SuperBowl Ring, because Trent Dilfer has a higher % rate, QB rating, and INT to TD ratio. Dilfer also rushed for 853 yards in 130 career games (nearly 7 times what Namath ran for)

Namath actually sorta sucked.

I think it might be safe to say that Joe Namath isn't a thought of as a great QB....as you pointed out by his stats he was dismal at best...but to consider him overrated for the fact that his career stats suck is not fair...

This is the QB that lead the Jets over the Colts when the AFL was still around...this was a huge upset, one of the biggest of all time in almost all sports...and JOE lead it...Why is this so big? Because with this win, the AFL made a statement that it could compete with the NFL...

Contracts were signed and the merge went as planned...this game was the most influential game in making the NFL...and the man who made it mostly possible was himself Joe Namath

When i think of top QBs in the league, past and present, he isn't a top one...and I'm sure many people don't see him as that either...they see him as the QB that made the merge for the NFL possible...he had a career game and it couldn't have been on a better day...
heck ESPN, Si fox sports and numerous other top ten qb list don't have him in it

BUT he was the first qb to throw for 4,000yds in a season, and he did predict the biggest upset in football history...and he did make it possible for the AFL the NFL

He had 1 Big Season..... so did Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Stan Humphries, and Rich Gannon. Big Deal.

The AFL-NFL merger had to do with a great many players, many who were much better than Namath, including:

Len Dawson
Lance Alworth
Daryl Lamonica
Ken Houston
Gene Upshaw / Art Shell
OJ Simpson

The fact that you give him credit for making the merger possible is a testament to just how overrated that dude is.

What? the guy had the biggest game of his career, in which the out come adversely effected how NFL football would have been played to this date...

All the players you mention that had big games, had little impact on the LEAGUE ITSELF...it brought them a championship...Namath brought a league together to make the NFL what it is...i never said it was ALL Namath that made this possible but his win made a huge impact on it

The players you mention played DIFFERENT positions yet you claim they are better...how can you compare? hahaha

Overrated: Warren Sapp.

Doesn't even rank top 25 in sacks...
No where top of the leagues leaders in tackles...
never recorded more than 50 tackles in one season...
No major contributions to the league except discipline problems, and fined repeatedly for unsportsmanlike like conduct...

With 8 pro bowl selections it was all popularity for this man...his mouth got more attention than his actually playing skills....Im not sure which was bigger his ego or his actual size...

Warren Sapp...???!!!!

The Biz Markie of the NFL???!!!!!

This is not even close. Namath didn't even have that great of a SuperBowl statistically, but he gets credit for the win. Their defense was stellar and Matt Snell deserved more credit.

Namath is EASILY the most overrated player in NFL history.

Ok seeing you made NO argument against sapp i will just say this...

You call Broadway Joe the most overrated player to ever play in the NFL...

So how about those players that are given millions of dollars and cant even play 4 season long...let alone win a Championship or even make the playoffs...

Like
Ryan Leaf,
Ricky Williams
Heath Shuler
Akili Smith
Ki-Jana Carter

These athletes along with COUNTLESS others were paid MILLIONS of dollars to play and didn't do squat in this league...and you wan tto call a QB from the AFL which was favored heavy to defensive tackles and against QBs the most overrated player ever? Year after year player gets top rated and they turn out to be flops....yet a HOF QB from the hay day is EASILY the most overrated? thats a joke...

Pick coming next....

May 27, 2008  02:02 AM ET

Will wait for all arguments before voting. Should I really even need to say this? These days, yes.

May 27, 2008  03:08 AM ET

Bradshaw was statistically better than Namath and had 2 Super Bowl MVP's and a League MVP. He also has a hand full of rings.

Namath beats him hands down.

May 27, 2008  03:22 AM ET

The Savage is most likely a jealous Clowns fan, but since he lists no hometown or favorite teams and doesnt back up his choice with any reasons, I am just going to say he was blowing smoke out his arse to be nice.

May 27, 2008  03:23 AM ET

Everyone is still talking about Namath 40 years later like he is a legend or something. But statistically, he doesn't even surpass Trent Dilfer in ANY important QB category, yet they both have played a similar number of games.

And don't day it is just about the era, otherwise you would have to explain away Unitas and Tarkenton.

May 27, 2008  08:11 AM ET

The problem is that you can't directly compare stats across eras. It's insufficient to look at his comp % and his TD:INT and say he was overrated.

Aside from the ridiculous upset in Superbowl III, he led the AFL and the NFL is multple categories in various years. The QB position has changed over the years.

While I don't necessarily agree with the Sapp pick either, I have to go right.

May 27, 2008  08:12 AM ET

He is not easily the most overrated. That's an overstatement. I really don't even consider Namath overrated at all. Vote right.

May 27, 2008  09:10 AM ET

It's important to note that QB stats completely changed once Walsh invented the west coast offense. completion percentages went way up, as well as a bunch of other things, it's completely different. You always have to compare players to the league in which they played, not to the league decades down the line. It's like saying Carl Yastrzemski in 1968 was worse than Justin Morneau in 2006 because Morneau beats him in most categories, the problem is the difference in the hitting in those years. Yas led the league in hitting with a .301 average. The league hit .230 that year. You have to know what you're comparing to, and you have to be able to adjust if you want to compare across eras.

May 27, 2008  09:48 AM ET

You are aware that Warren Sapp was a defensive tackle, right? Why on earth would he be in the top 10 in ANY statistical category? Defensive tackles aren't SUPPOSED to be league leaders in anything.

HUR Anthony Munoz doesn't even rank in the top 25 in rushing in NFL history he's overrated too dur.....

May 27, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Also, Namath was an excellent QB in his era. As has been pointed out, quarterbacks simply used to throw a LOT more interceptions than they do now, due to a variety of reasons (harsher rules for receivers and QBs, simpler offenses, etc).

Directly comparing Namath to a guy like Trent Dilfer based entirely on their statistics is an incredibly stupid argument.

May 27, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Great arguments right, vote to steveo

May 27, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Hes remember for his prediction, not his play.He affected the game a great deal, but so did a lot of great AFL players and the Cheifs winning the next year was huge.I dont think hes overrated,I never hear his name mentioned when the "experts" talk all time QB'S.

Sapp may be the best DT of our generation.

Bradshaw had 4 super bowls

May 27, 2008  12:49 PM ET

That's stupid...you can't say a guy that won is overrated. Besides, I don't recall anyone putting him on an all-time great list. He was infamous as a personality, as opposed to being considered a great QB...there's a difference.
I say McNabb or Alexander

May 27, 2008  12:49 PM ET

Namath may not have been a top ten all time QB, OK so he wasn't, but he is not the single most over-rated player ever, even if you think he was over-rated.

May 27, 2008  02:33 PM ET

It DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS THE MOST OVERRATED IN NFL HISTORY!

NAMATH is WAY more OVERRATED than SAPP! What are you people thinking???!!!

Does anyone understand sports or is this just a vote for your buddy thing?

May 27, 2008  03:05 PM ET

Most overrated - Terry Bradshaw

May 27, 2008  03:05 PM ET

maybe the reason sapp doesn't have the stats is because he was usually double or tripple teamed because he was so huge and strond. Nose tackles are no meant to rack up sacks or tackles they are there to plug the whole and if i am not mistaken the Bucs was highly known for stopping the run. I wonder what the reason was????? SAPP.

May 27, 2008  03:06 PM ET

ChicksDigMe | 05/27/08, 03:08 AM

A good O-Line and a great D will win you rings... I'm a huge Cowboys fan, but just ask Aikman how a great O-Line and great D can will you 3 rings in 4 years. Aikman had little to do with it.

Jose_Canseco | 05/27/08, 02:33 PM

Obviously a number of people would disagree with you. And some of us (at least) do indeed understand sports.

Plus, you vote based on arguments, not just the choice.

May 27, 2008  03:17 PM ET

One is arguing Namath, the other Sapp.

Sapp is truly great, and DT's are not known for sacks, that is DEs. DTs are not known for tackles, that is LB's, so the Sapp argument is pure BUNK. If you TRULY understood sports you would gather this. At least the Namath argument holds merit.

Namath was a flash in the pan, and took credit away from a great Jets Team, with a stellar defense.
