Michael Beasley is the best pick for the Chicago Bulls

My first throw down.....here we go: Michael Beasley is the best pick for the Chicago Bulls for many reasons. He fills more of a need for the team at the PF position. At PG, where many think they will draft Derrick Rose, they have Kirk Hinrich and a very reliable Chris Duhon to back him up. Hinrich averaged 6 assists per game this year, dead even with Tony Parker, while averaging 11.5 ppg (almost 3 points below his career average...clearly just an off season) and 1.2 spg. They have good options at every other position with Gordon and Hughes rotating at shooting guard, Luol Deng and Nocioni rotating at small forward, and a young, developing Joakim Noah at center. Their weakest position is PF, with Tyrus Thomas not turning out to be the player they hoped and I highly doubt they feel Drew Gooden is the answer there. Instead of taking Rose (and worry about trading Hinrich and not getting what is deserved for a player of his caliber at such a crucial position), they should take Beasley and try to get rid of Thomas & Gooden together. They would absolutely get more in reciprocation for the two than they would for Hinrich. This would give them one of the best starting lineups in the East.

I could easily see the Bulls taking Derrick Rose. He is the hometown boy, having played at Simeon High School in Chicago. There is no question Rose will be an NBA star and premier PG. What would the Hornets have been this year without Chris Paul at the point? Playoff-less for sure.

The Bulls can get the body and player-type of a Micheal Beasley with the players they will trade(the PGs they have now in Hinrich and Hughes and possibly even forward Drew Gooden) because Rose will be replacing them.

Rose will beautifully distribute to Tyrus Thomas, Ben Gordon, and Deng. Who of those three would you bench when bringing in Beasley? Plus, then you have the disappointing Hinrich distributing to a rookie? How does that help the Bulls make the playoffs next year? Chris Paul showed us a 23 year old can use selfless skills to make his big men play bigger than they could as individuals and that is why the Bulls should go with Rose here. He will make the Bulls big 3 that much better. What would West and Chandler have done this year for the Hornets except be nice statues without a solid PG to lead them?

The Bulls can get a player like Joey Dorsey in the 2nd round for a low post presence.

Yes, I can see the Bulls taking Rose as well, but the argument is which is the better pick. And I say Beasley. Beasley is superstar material as well. Carmelo Anthony with better shooting and more post presence. And yes, Hinrich didn't score as much this season, but his field goal % was on point with his career average. He just split more time with Duhon. Hughes started at SG, his natural position, this year after his arrival in Chicago and they had Gordon coming off the bench as 6th man. With Hinrich distributing the ball to Gordon, Hughes, Deng, Nocioni, Beasley, and Noah, his assists average will definetely raise at least 2 per game. Hinrich was not the disappointment this year, it was the coaching and the team chemisty. And come on...do you really think Joey Dorsey will be the short term impact player the Bulls need? He will be a Glen Davis type bench warmer at best. Chris Paul was mostly responsible for the Hornets huge improvement this year, yes, but they didn't have a reliable point guard like Hinrich on the team before they drafted him. So I say take Beasley, and trade Gooden & Thomas for the best offer that will fill a team need.

Well John, I think I went way out of my way in stating in my first argument y Rose would b the better pick for the Bulls, dont you think? I know u say Beasley and you said that very clearly in your TD title and in your first argument. However, repeating it over again only goes to reinforce you are relying more on your opinion of getting what you think is the best player available, instead of filling a huge hole the Bulls have at PG. Yes they have players there, but no one the caliber of Rose and with the player movements that would result from Chicago making a PG pick, they would free up the dough to get an experienced bigger body and can even capture a player somewhat similiar to Beasley in the 2nd round as I have previously stated.

Nobody coming out of college is going to necessarily be a future anyone, let alone a Carmelo Anthony clone. Lets see how this guy handles the NBA and what team he plays for and what role he is placed into before annointing him with being a twin of a current premier NBA player.

Hinrich career averages arent what the Bulls want to see again next year from the extremely important PG position. You cant be a reliable and disappointing PG, John

I didn't say Beasley would be a Melo clone. I merely said he is similar to Carmelo but I see him with a higher shooting % and more of a post presence (the first probably being due to the latter). This is what they need to make the team complete. Hinrich has not been a disappointment. His play with the team was praised until now and that was because they had a disappointing year but as I already stated, this was not due to his play, but to the poor coaching and team chemistry. He only scored less because he split more time with Duhon. Bringing Beasley into the picture in Chicago would give the team a huge scoring option and the post guy they need. His scoring would mix well with Deng and Gordon and take pressure off Noah down low. Rose wasn't considered a No. 1 pick until the tourney run. The void is at the PF position not PG, and whatever guy they get in the 2nd round would turn out to be a disappointment like Tyrus Thomas has been thus far. Holding onto the PG that has been reliable and knows the team already is wiser. And they even have depth at the position! Thomas&Gooden together on the trade block would bring better offers and bring depth to Chi and strengthen the rotation

You keep saying Hinrich wasnt a disappointment last season. Well at PG primary function is to rack up assists. Hinrich averaged 6.0
I think you would agree its disappointing the players below did better:

Raymond Felton, 7.4

Lebron James is a small forward and he averaged more assists than Hinrich at 7.2

Hinrich averaged 11.5 points per game. That is below average and disappointing for a guard with good big men around him to take the pressure off. These guards averaged better:

Jamal Crawford 20.6

Monta Ellis 20.2

Brandon Roy 19.1

Leonardo Barbosa 15.7

Andre Miller 17.1

Rafer Alston 13.1

Kevin Martin 23.7

Cuttino Mobley 12.8

If K-Mart can average 23+ for the Sacramento Kings, Hinrich at 11 is very disappointing for the Bulls and screams this position needs a serious upgrade.

And its not like KH is a good rebounder. He averaged 3.3 which is way worse than:

Monta Ellis 5.0

Bonzi Wells 4.5

Kevin Martin 4.5

Baron Davis 4.7

Jason Kidd 7.5

The Bulls need a replacement at PG! They need it asap and they have to give up nothing to get him at #1. His name is Derrick Rose. His immediate availability should silence Beasley chant.

Good luck John and welcome to Fannation.

Thanks Cassidy. At the end let me know how I did and if you don't mind I'd appreciate some tips for the future.
PS: GO PENGUINS

May 27, 2008  02:11 AM ET

i like both, and i see alot of moves that could be made to accommodate either player...arguments thus far im leaning towards cass...

May 27, 2008  02:20 AM ET

I'm saying they already have one of the better PGs in the East with a good backup as it is. So take Beasley to fill the PF void and trade away Gooden and/or Thomas and make the Bulls a deeper team.

May 27, 2008  02:32 AM ET

Favre Fan I'll tell you right now what you need to do. Break up your arguments into paragraphs. It's a tough read on here when your entire argument isn't broken up at all.

May 27, 2008  02:33 AM ET

Here were the top 21 PG numbers for points per game for the NBA this year:

Baron Davis 21.8
Chris Paul 21.1
Deron Williams 18.8
Andre Miller 17.1
Chauncy Billips 17.0
Steve Nash 16.9
Rafer Alston 13.1
Derek Fisher 11.7
Jose Calderon 11.2
Jason Kidd 10.8
Earl Watson 10.7
Jarett Jack 9.9
Roger Mason 9.1
Steve Blake 8.5
Antonio Daniels 8.4
Janero Pargo 8.1
Keyon Dooling 8.1
Anthony Carter 7.8
Bobby Jackson 7.7
Brevin Knight 4.6
Jacque Vaughn 4.1

Do you see any Hinrich or Bulls PGs up there? Me neither. Kind of sad that the Hornets and Rockets have TWO PGs up there and the Bulls have none.Thats a problem area for the Bulls that needs to be addressed asap and Rose is sitting there for the taking.

May 27, 2008  02:48 AM ET

You're trying to tell me that Jacque Vaugh averaged more than Hinrich this year? And that Hinrich didn't even average 4.1 ppg? Weird...go to NBA.com and check out his stats...he'd be between Calderon and Fisher at 11.5 ppg andddddd 6 apg.

And Duhon averaged 5.8 ppg and 4.0 apg.... not bad considering he only averaged 22 minutes a game. So the Bulls have 2 on there too. So PG is not a problem area for them.

May 27, 2008  02:53 AM ET

The stats I am using dont even have Hinrich as a true PG, just a generic guard. See here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/stats/byposition?pos=G&conferenc e=NBA&year=season_2007

When you look at stats for point guards, Hinrich wasnt worthy of the title apparently.

May 27, 2008  02:54 AM ET

Do the same thing for forwards...You'll find the Bulls backup small forward scores more than the starting power forward. If you look at the top 50 forwards by PPG the only Bulls power forward on there barely cracks the list at No. 50 with 12 ppg (Gooden). Power forward is clearly the problem position.

May 27, 2008  02:54 AM ET

This is my list of players listed as point guards:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/stats/byposition?pos=PG&conferen ce=NBA&year=season_2007

May 27, 2008  02:56 AM ET

It's got nothing to do with worthy...it has to do with their rotation having Duhon, Hughes, Gordon, and Hinrich all clocking more than 20 mpg so they have many different backcourt combos. He sometimes comes in at the SG position too. Hence the Guard label...not just PG. He's not just reliable but versatile.

May 27, 2008  02:56 AM ET

My point is Hinrich doesnt and will never have the potential of a guy like Rose who is there for the taking. The time is now for the Bulls to lock up their long-term PG.

May 27, 2008  02:56 AM ET

Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox.....thanks for the tip that will definetely by helpful in the future

May 27, 2008  02:57 AM ET

Good night John. Will finish this tomorrow morning west coast time.

May 27, 2008  03:02 AM ET

Why take Rose when you have a more than capable starter and solid back-up? They have two options at the position already. PF is the problem for them and getting Beasley would increase Hinrich and Duhon's assists and take pressure off of Deng and Gordon (the other main scoring threats) and Noah (the other guy in the paint). Beasley and Noah would be a great combo down low for years to come. With Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Beasley, Noah starting and Nocioni, Hughes, Duhon, and whoever they get for Gooden&Thomas coming off the bench, the Bulls will be guaranteed a playoff spot in 08-09.

May 27, 2008  03:02 AM ET

Both arguments have compelling points, but also things I disagree with. Dorsey to me is definitely not what I would call a low post presence. Didn't they try that one with Ben Wallace, a similar player (low scoring, monster defense)? And I don't think you can use PG ppg with Hinrich as an example if you aren't going to call him a PG.

I would bench Thomas before Gordon and Deng. And Gordon would be useful as a 6th man, which is what he is known for anyway.

Tough call. Gonna have to think about it. Didn't Hinrich sign a contract recently?

May 27, 2008  03:02 AM ET

i probably wont be up til noon your time since its 3am right now in jersey. night cassidy.

May 27, 2008  06:12 AM ET

Having a low post player will open Hinrich/Gordon/Deng to light it up from the outside. Adding Derrick Rose would simply make them a slightly version of last years team. Even if Rose is another Chris Paul, he has low post players to dish it to on the drive, and open up the outside shots. Without a post presence, Rose will have to rely to much on a jump shot, which needs improvement. Beasley also brings them a big rebounder. Noah will be solid, but other then that who do they have to grab those rebounds? In my opinion Beasely has to be the pick here. I mean he put up better overall numbers then Durant, and you can't tell me Durant would npt be the hands down best player in this draft. It may not be the popular pick, because Rose is the hometown guy, but you gotta choose the piece that will fit best with your current roster, as making all kinds of trades with throw off chemistry.

May 27, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Pick Rose and trade Hinrich for that low post scorer. It kind of makes sense. Vote for Cass.
