Close- Dennis Eckersly not enough room for his stats

so we have Bench Vs. Berra, Mays Vs. Williams, Thomas Vs. Bonds, Clemens Vs. Maddux so thats 2 per argument. Here we go to start off.

Johnny Bench Vs Yogi Berra
Bench HR-389 .267 BA
Berra- HR- 358 .285 BA
Bench hit more home runs than Berra, Berra had a higher batting average though. Bench was a 2 time MVP (70,72) he was also the 1976 World Series MVP. Ted Williams in 1968 wrote on a baseball to Johnny Bench during spring training "Johnny Bench a hall of famer for sure." That coming from the great Ted Williams. In 17 years Bench was a 14 time all star, that is amazing.

Ted Williams Vs. Willie Mays
Williams- .344 BA 521 HR
Mays- .302 BA 660 HR

Williams also had three seasons where he batted over .400 a feat that Willie Mays never accomplished and the closest he got was .347. Williams was also a two time MVP (46,49). He was also a 6 time batting champion. Williams is one of the best hitters of all time, Mays hit more home runs but Williams was a better hitter.

Thomas Vs. Bonds and Clemens Vs. Maddux in next argument

Johnny Bench Vs Yogi Berra

You failed to mention that Berra had more league MVP's, and more all-star games.

And I don't see how it's relevant that some old geezer told another old geezer 50 years ago that he was a hall of famer, I bet Yogi Berra was told that he was a future hall of famer every other day.

Ted Williams Vs. Willie Mays

First of all I would like to point out that Ted Williams only hit over .400 once, also I seriously doubt Ted Williams had anywhere near 12 gold gloves and that's the main reason I gave Mays the edge here, because of the fact that he was a better power hitter, and a much better fielder.

Ok the reason Ted Williiams does not have 12 gold gloves is that award was not around then

Frank Thomas or Barry Bonds
I would like to point out that Barry Bonds is not a DH. Frank Thomas is the all time DH home run leader. Bonds didnt play DH so he doesnt count.

Greg Maddux or Roger Clemens. Maddux has a few less wins than Clemens but Maddux did his without the use of steroids. After this season Maddux will have more wins then Clemens all time. Roger Clemens legacy has been torn because of the roids talk. Greg Maddux also has the most flawless pitching mechanics i have ever seen.

With the Bench and Berra all star situation, Berra played more seasons than Bench and only had one more all star appearence.

"Frank Thomas or Barry Bonds

Yeah but if he would of played in the Al we all know that he would of been a DH, and his whole time in San Fran he was basicly a glorified DH.

Also when congress finds some DNA samples or roder Confesses I will admit that Madux was better, but until then I would prefer to stay in my own fantasy world in which Rodger never took steroids and never had sex with someone my age.

I beleive that playing more seasons should contribute to your status because that proves that Berra had better longevity and that is a decideing factor when major leaguers are scouted.

barry bonds for dh assuming he didnt use steroids

May 28, 2008  02:13 PM ET

Not a big MLB guy so i passed on this one. Frank Thomas? Nolan Ryan? Dennis Eckersly?

May 28, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Nolan Ryan is the MLB all time leader in strike outs

May 28, 2008  02:57 PM ET

so we meet again lsurocks

May 28, 2008  03:05 PM ET

May 28, 2008  03:44 PM ET

3B- Brooks Robinson

May 28, 2008  04:42 PM ET

Um Ted Wiliams only hit over .400 once. .406

May 28, 2008  04:48 PM ET

screamindemon check your facts .406 in 1941 .400 in 1952 and .407 in 1953

May 28, 2008  05:09 PM ET

lakers he played a total of 43 games in those last two seasons combined. in 1952 he played just 6 gamaes. The hardly count as a .400 season. I love Williams just saying that theres no reason to manipulate the stats that way.

May 28, 2008  06:12 PM ET

Well my bad i only was looking at BA i didnt see his games played well the point still being he did have a .400 batting average season and his lifetime batting average was only 3 points under Willie Mays' best batting average season

May 29, 2008  02:50 PM ET

Nolan Ryan might be the most overrated pitcher of all-time. He doesn't belong in the same breath as Clemens, Maddux, Johnson, Spahn and Young.

May 30, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Nolan Ryan is not overrated he is the all time leader in strike outs and pitched 7 no hitters that doesnt sound like an overrated pitcher to me

May 30, 2008  10:16 PM ET

I would lie to point out that I never Throwdown about MLB, so I'm a bit out of my element.

May 30, 2008  10:16 PM ET

Like not lie

May 31, 2008  01:05 AM ET

I guess u want DNA samples from bonds too to prove he toke steroids. And there is no such thing as a glorified DH in the NL when he goes out and plays his position just like anyone else

May 31, 2008  07:28 PM ET

"guess u want DNA samples from bonds too to prove he toke steroids."

No not really I've just always been such a big Clemens fan I just decided to be one of those unrealistic fans that won't belive there favorite athlete is a fraud until they see a negative drug test, but Bonds is a jerk, I'm glad he got caught and humiliated
