Brian McCann, he has better stats than Soto, but is trailing in voting by 100,000 votes how should this not be starting as a catcher in the all star game?
.320 avg
.580 Slg%
32 RBIs
58 hits
9 HR
18 doubles
1 triple
Detroit Steel said 05/29, 03:17 PM
Why Brian McCann is trailing in the voting to Geovanny Soto?
Because Soto's stats are just plain old better.
Soto...........................................McCann
.305 avg ................................. .320 avg
.400 OBP .................................383 OBP
9 HR .............................................. 9 HR
36 RBI .......................................... 32 RBI
29 BB ............................................ 19 BB
.969 OPS .................................. .963 OPS
See, better stats.
McCann has also been hitting .238 with just one run batted in in his last six games. This could mean that a slump is coming up.
Soto just has had a better overall hitting perfromance so far this year. He also is the better fielder.
Soto has caught 32.4% of runners trying to steal on him compared to McCann's 19.0%. Soto also has more assists and almost as many put-outs in less games started.
Soto should be the NL All-Star starting catcher.
outlaw is Jerry Jeff Walker said 05/29, 03:55 PM
you left out slg% which McCann is leading .580 to .569, McCann has 18 doubles to Sotos 17, 58 hits to Sotos 53, and you posted about a players performance in the last 6 games??? like everybody doesn't go though a small slump like that, McCann is hitting .298 with RISP compared to Sotos .255, and McCann has the higher Batting avg more doubles, higher slg%, and more hits.
Detroit Steel said 05/29, 08:43 PM
Your argument was two sentences - I don't even get what you are trying to argue.
I left out slugging percentage but Mccann is leading by just .011. McCann also has a few more at-bats and that may have been where he got his 18th double. Doubles aren't a huge stat so that is why I left it out.
Again, McCann has more at-bats and more games started. That may have been where he got his "whopping" five more base hits.
McCann may have the better average with runners in scoring position but either way you look at it, Soto still has more runs batted in. I could care less about average with runners in scoring position as a coach, the only thing I would care about is the runs batted in.
So, everywhere else other than slugging percentage, average with RISP, doubles and hits (barely in three out of these four), Soto is doing better.
Soto has McCann in runs batted in, OBP (the stat that is more valuable than hits), BB, OPS and fielding. Soto is just more deserving.
outlaw is Jerry Jeff Walker said 05/29, 08:49 PM
He's not more deserving, the fact that McCann has more at bats and started more games means he's more durable, and ready to play, how is RISP not important, if the games tied in the 9th with 2 outs and a runner on second, I believe I would want a player that hits for a high average in clutch situations, and you left them out because McCann was barely beating him lets take a look at what you put earlier
Soto beats McCann .007 in OBP
Soto beats McCann by 4 in rbis
Soto beats McCann by .006 in OPS
Detroit Steel said 05/29, 09:02 PM
Why are you stating the fact that Soto beats McCann in some catagories? He is barely beating him in those catagories?
Okay, unlike doubles and hits (in more at-bats), these are stats that are really important. And last time I checked (now), Soto is leading in all of them.
I know I said it was close on doubles and hits and RISP but when one player has more at-bats than the other, McCann is sure to have more hits and more doubles.
Right now, you are saying that McCann should be the starter ahead of Soto because in the important statistic areas, McCann was ALMOST better than Soto.
So . . . .007 - I'll take that, it shows that Soto is better.
For runs batted in . . . four is a lot considering that four is exactly 1/8 of McCann's current RBI's.
On OPS . . . I believe that .006 more is still better.
Soto has better stats around the board pretty much.

you'll take the ones Soto barely has McCann beat in, but for some reason refuse to acknowledge the ones that McCann has him beat in, avg, RISP, Hits, Doubles, SLG%, and I'd rather have a player thats in there everyday like McCann and apparently according to your arguement, Soto who you claim has way less at bats

McCann actually has a higher OPS+ then Soto because Turner Field is more friendlier to pitchers then Wrigley Field. However, Soto's catcher's ERA is lower and he has done a much better job gunning down runners on the basepaths then McCann. Hopefully, neither catcher gets screwed out of an all-star berth.
