Rules - defend your choice only in your 1st argument. Minimum 6 years played during the specified time period and only HITTING stats/accomplishments from 1950 - 1959 can be used.

This was tough, there are a lot of great hitters from that time but my choice is Mickey Mantle.

Here are Mickey's stats/accomplishments:

Games: 1246
At Bats: 4478
Runs: 994
Hits: 1392
Doubles: 208
Triples: 54
HRs: 280
Stolen Bases: 98
BBs: 892
Ks: 899
OBP: .425
Slugging %: .569
Batting Average: .311
2 time MVP (1956 and 57)
AL HItting Triple Crown (1956)
Led the AL in Batting Average 1 time
Led the AL in OBP 1 time
Led the AL in Slugging 2 times
Led the AL in OPS 3 times
Led the AL in Runs Scored 3 times
Led the AL in Total Bases 2 times
Led the AL in Triples 1 time
Led the AL in HRs 3 times
Led the AL in RBI 1 time
Led the AL in BBs 3 times
Led the AL in Runs Created 6 times
Led the AL in Extra Base Hits 3 times

Stan the man Musial

Games:1479
AB's:5366
Runs:719
Hits:1771
2B's:356
3B's:52
HR's:266
RBI's:972
SB(not much for hitting but) Mantle has more
BB's 842
SO's(blew me away):339
OBP and slugging could not find acurate numbers
Batting average .303
1951 ML player of year
All star every year in 50's
one of two players to have 5 HR's in one day(did so in a double header)
NL Batting champ in 1950,51,52,57
Led the league in extra base hits twice
Led the league in times on base from 1950-53 and 1957
Led the NL in offensive win% from 1950-53,57
was feared as well, leading the league in intentioanl walks in 1957,1958
Led the NL in runs in 51,52,54
led NL in OPS in 50,52,57
Doubles from 52-54
batting wins 50,52,53
Walks in 53
RBI's in 56
posted high averages in several years in the 50's such as .346,.351,.355
led NL in OBP in 53,57
SLG in 50,57

Yes Stan "the Man" was the greatest hitter of the 50's

Mickey's OBP average for his 9 seasons: .420
Stan's OBP average for his 10 seasons: .418

Mickey's Slugging % average for his 9 seasons: .564
Stan's Sluggin % average for his 10 seasons: .562

Mickey's Batting average for his 9 seasons: .311
Stan's Batting average for his 10 seasons: .327

Those 3 categories are very close with Mickey getting the edge in 2 (just barely).

Mickey's Highest OBP, Slugging and Batting average posted in this time: .512 for OBP, .705 for Slugging and .365 for Batting average.
Stan's Highest OBP, Slugging and Batting average posted in this time: .448 OBP, .614 for Slugging and .355 for Batting average.

So out of the 2, Mickey had the best single season for OBP, Slugging and Batting average.

Even though Stan played in 210 more games than Mickey did, Mickey had more HRs for the time period, and only 7 less triples than Stan.

I looked at per game averages for hits, HRs, doubles, triples, walks and RBI. Here they are:

Mickey averaged per game: 1.1 hits, .22 HRs, .67 RBIs, .17 doubles, .04 triples and .64 walks
Stan averaged per game: 1.2 hits, .18 HRs, .67 RBIs, .24 doubles, .04 triples and .52 walks

Out of room

So their OBP,and slugging are nearly the same, while Musial's avg was noticeable better,I'll tae that.

Mantle posted higher numbers in his best season in the 50's when he had the tremendous triple crown season, his numbers are easily below in several categories from that 1956 season.Other than that Musial was much more consistent and could be counted on to produce 100 RBI seasons and higher than 300 averages.
In the 50's Musial posted averages of:
.341
.355
.336
.337
.330
.319
.310
.350
.337
and then .255 as he began to show some age.

As far as RBI's go he was consistent there,with 7- 100 RBI seasons,compared to Mickey's 4- 100 RBI seasons.

Now I don't want to criticize Mantle on the unluckiness of injuries but some of it was actually his fault.Yes,I'll take into account that Mantle was a hard drinker, smoker, and loved to party, which is parlayed in the movie *61,and according to books is accurate. He was partly to blame for the insecure care of his body that caused it to break down, and endured much pain through terrible injuries.

Those numbers you gave on the bottom pretty much make it sound even.

Overral,Stan Musial was the greatest hitter of the 1950's.

Let's see....more Home Runs in less games - Mickey.
Better OBP for the decade - Mickey
Better Slugging % for the decade - Mickey
Better Batting Average for the decade - Stan
More Total Bases for the decade - Stan (200+ more games)
More Extra Base Hits for the decade - Stan (in 200+ more games)
And a very interesting stat - More times grounded into a double play (a big time rally killer) - Stan did this 133 times to Mickey's 44....

So Mickey was more likely to hit a HR, get on base and not into a double play.

Musial never hit for his league's triple crown - Mickey did. Mickey also had 2 MVPs to Musial's 0 during this time period. Mickey also had 11 HRs in 9 post-seasons during this time (Musial's team never made the postseason during this time period).

These guys are a lot closer than I would have initially thought. So the question really comes down to this......you need a HR to win the game - who do you want at the plate? The answer is Mickey....You need a base hit with a man on first who do you want at the plate? The answer is Mickey (hit into less double plays)....

And once again, let me pick out who is a lot at fault for not playing as many games......-Mickey

Stan knew how to get himself into scoring position right off the bat.He had 683 extra base hits compared to Mantle's 542.I could can not account for exact numbers but Musial did have considerably more Sac Fly's than Mantle. So Musial was no slouch with runners on.

A main reason for Musial's supremacy over hitters in the '50s was his consistency at the plate. His three best Batting average totals were as follows;.355,.351,.346.Mantle's were: .365,.353, .306,with a large dropoff as you can see for Mantle.Along with Musial's RBI's totals, three best 126,109,108,Mantle's two best 130,102,a 28 RBI dropoff from his best to second best.

If there was one thing that pretty much defines their consistency it would be strikeout totals.Mantle struck out over 100 times in a season 4 times.

Musial never struck out more than 40 in any '50's season, and even struck out 26 times one season in a bout 500 AB's.

Yes these two were two of the best hitters of their generation but I have Musial here as the better of the two.

Good luck Cincy.

May 30, 2008  08:55 AM ET

It's really tough to argue against Mantle. Musial is the only other hitter I can think that has a case.

May 30, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Please don't give my opponent any ideas....

May 30, 2008  09:07 AM ET

rstowe's pick of Mantle makes his opponent's pick easy. I'm sure Cincy is simply compiling all of Willie Mays' stats.

Did I miss something in stowe's comment?

May 30, 2008  09:30 AM ET

My stats for Mickey may be off....the site I used seems to be experiencing issues with totalling stats for the time period (I noticed that it was off for Mays' At Bats by about 2000)...I will make any necessary corrections in my 2nd argument.

RHATER: The Mods Suck | 05/30/08, 09:26 AM

Are you kidding? Mays is the most obvious choice. I'm not giving anyone any ideas. Besides, what does he care if he thinks he can argue Mantle? Want more ideas? Duke Snider and Yogi Berra are just 2 other legitimate choices. Mays is still the most obvious.

May 30, 2008  09:32 AM ET

This is why no comments should be allowed until both sides make their first arguments....and actually Mays isn't that obvious for the 50s....I can argue easily argue for Mantle.

May 30, 2008  09:34 AM ET

I can argue easily argue for Mantle.
rstowe - HOYVIN-GLAYVIN! | 05/30/08, 09:32 AM

That's why it shouldn't matter. You know who the other great hitters of that era are. If you think Mantle is the best, you should be able to argue as such. Why do you seem so timid?

May 30, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Not timid.....just don't like it when people give the opponent ideas in the comments before he makes his pick....what if he never though of Mays or Musial or Snider or Berra?

May 30, 2008  09:39 AM ET

You're joking, right? Do a google search of "Best Hitters of the 1950s."
Your first result will read:
1. Mickey Mantle
2. Willie Mays
3. Duke Snider
4. Stan Musial
5. Gil Hodges

You'd have to be a moron not to think of these guys. If your opponent is in fact a moron, you should have no trouble arguing Mantle.

May 30, 2008  09:49 AM ET

That is true HunkyMunky however, am I in this TD against you? No, so please keep your opinions etc to yourself until my opponent makes his choice....that is only fair to me and my opponent.

May 30, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Yea...this chimp isn't pleased with such monkey business.

May 30, 2008  10:24 AM ET

didnt know you were a Yankee/Giant fan rich. I don't check out people's profiles, ever. Learning something new every day.

May 30, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Now you know Moon....

And knowing is half the battle.

May 30, 2008  12:19 PM ET

i love how narrow the TD topics are becoming these days....there is no debate on this topic

May 30, 2008  12:26 PM ET

It's tough when thousands of topics have been thrown around, many of them that are conducive to debate. Eventually, they get this way and there is nothing to be done about it. Sometimes the good ones get recycled too.

May 30, 2008  12:26 PM ET

The best hitter of the 50s will be Barry Bonds. He's invented a time machine to travel back and hit another 500 homers, thus upping his total to well over 1000.

May 30, 2008  02:36 PM ET

Good luck to you to.Let me finish up looking up stats.
