NL Central Lineup

* Must have atleast one player from each club

C- Geovany Soto CHC
1B- Lance Berkman HOU
2B- Brandon Phillips CIN
3B- Aramis Ramirez CHC
SS- Miguel Tejada HOU
OF-Ryan Ludwick STL
OF- Ryan Braun MIL
OF- Nate McLouth PIT

SP- Edinson Volquez CIN

I'll argue on 2nd depending on your list.

C- Geovany Soto
1B- Lance Berkman
2B- Mark Derosa
3B- Aramis Ramirez
SS- Miguel Tejada
OF- Ryan Braun
OF- Nate McLouth
OF- Xavier Nady

SP- Edinson Volquez

I will argue in second to make it fair as well.

Ok....

1) You have 3 Cubs, 2 Astros, 1 Brewers, 2 Pirates, 1 Reds but no players from the Cardinals...I asked that you have atleast one player from each club...

2) That aside...

We have Phillips vs DeRosa

For the first part I'll dish out some stats to show that Phillips has had a better production this year...

Hits - Edge Phillips by 7.
Extra bases hits - Edge Phillips by 3
HRs - Edge Phillips by 5 (twice as many as DeRosa)
RBI- Edge Phillips by 1
SB- Edge Phillips by 6

But, let me go ahead and put your argument out: Phillips has more At Bats.....this is true I must admit...but what was the factor that made me go with Phillips?

Well,

a) even with less at bats DeRosa still has MORE strikeouts than Phillips....

b) Slugging - Phillips wins out .526 ( good for 3rd in NL) while DeRosa has a .469.

3) Ludwick vs McLouth

Well, I put Ludwick to meet the requirements of the TD....

BUT lets compare:

In 50 less at bats, Ludwick has 1 more HR, same number of RBIs ( good for 4th in NL for OF...and yet of the top 12 he has the less ABs),
higher BA (2nd in NL for OF) ,
OBP (5th),
SLG (1st),
and OPS.(1st)

Sorry, I meant to put Pujols.

Anyways...

Phillips vs. DeRosa

Phillips may have more HR's, but he only leads the RBI category by 1. And considering that DeRosa bats in the lower half of the order, 29 RBI's is a great number.

DeRosa's BA is a full 20 points higher than Phillips and his OBP is .397, 60 points higher than Phillips.

DeRosa also has the better OPS by a couple of points.

Since we both have Mclouth, I am going to compare Nady to Ludwick.

Nady has the better BA, .327 compared to .325. He had more RBI's even though he has less HR's.

Nady also has 5 less SO's even though he has more at bats. Nady also has a good 16 more hits than Ludwick.

Pujols vs. Berkman

Although I did this to full fill the TD requirements, I think Pujols has great stats as well.

Pujols has only struck out 19 times compared to the massive 32 for Berkman. Pujols also has more walks by 10+, and his OBP is 17 points higher than Berkmans.

1) DeRosa's pct stats may be somewhat misleading.. why? Well because he simply batted less times, therefore increasing his chances of having a better bat avg, and a better obp. BUT if we look at two key stat you will see Phillips is better....

SOs = even though DeRosa batted less he STILL HAS MORE SOs than Phillips

SLG = When he was asked to be clutch Phillips has proven to be more consistant, therefore his higher pct. in slugging.

2) Nady vs Ludwick

They have similar and close stats...however

Ludwich has more HRs
Higher OBS
Higher SLG
Higher OPS
Almost as much RBIs .....

all this with almost 50 less at bats than Nady

Those are very good stats to look at. But another one that tells you why DeRosa's OBP is much higher is his BB/PA or walks to plate appearances.

He averages .117 BB/PA where as Phillips averages .068. He may have less at bats, but his OBP is high because he is a patient hitter willing to take a walk.

Another reason I dont like Phillips is even though he has great speed he tends to ground into double plays. He is second among 2nd baseman with 7 GDP's. Which puts him 5th in the NL.

Although Phillips will produce a lot of runs, he will also take away some with his tendancy to ground into DP's.

Ludwick may have a bit higher OBP and SLG etc...but he has more strikeouts, and he has less total bases. And I will use your argument, he can inflate his OBP and many stats because he has less at bats.

This year's stats...sorry I forgot to mention.

we know this already Cole. But its good to get the reminder every now and then

Yankees suck more often, more profoundly, more consistently than the Marlins.

Not mine..Volquez would go the whole 9 innings.

.....because I'm a tough manager.

I meant to put Pujols instead of Berkman.

Report Offensive Comment

Cut off my Pujols vs Berkman...sorry

Berkman still makes up for his SOs with more hits, more HRs, more RBIs, more extra base hits, more steals, higher bat avg. and a higher slugging pct.

go stros !!

Nice throwdown, but strikeouts are a killer, and a slight edge in argumentation goes to the left...

I don't really know a whole lot about baseball, and both of your arguments sounded good to me. So in an event like this, I go to the more convincing argument, in my mind. Vote left.

Good TD. My last TD was almost similar to this one.
