SP-Jair Jurrjens: 2.86 ERA, 49 Ks
RP-Joba Chamberlain: 2.28 ERA, 30 Ks

3 differences: Murphy over Bruce, DeWitt over Longoria, and Tolbert over Janish.

Janish is batting .292, .346 OBP, 5 RBI's compared to Tolbert's .265, .307 3 RBI's in 18 less games... Tolbert is also on the DL.

Comparing Bruce and Murphy is hard to do considering Bruce was just called up. But Bruce - .444, .643OBP, 2 RBI's, 2 SB in 3 games.

Longoria - .252, 7 HR, 28 RBI, 22 R, 3 SB... higher than Dewitt in every category minus average with on;y 8 more ABs.

I'll give you Janish over Tolbert. That one was a reach.

It is way too early to put Bruce on this list. Dave Murphy was the April AL Rookie of the Month. Murphy is batting .288, has 6 home runs, 26 RBI, 19 2B, and an .802 OPS. Bruce has only played one series. Let's let him get more experience before saying he's had the third best season out of all the rookie outfielders.

DeWitt has a higher batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. Longoria only has one more RBI. DeWitt also has more putouts and assists than Longoria. DeWitt's BA is 40 points higher than Longoria's. Longoria does not have more runs than DeWitt. DeWitt has 23. Longoria has also struck out 20 more times. DeWitt has clearly been the better third baseman.

Bruce went 4 for 5 tonight.... is now batting .571, with another 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Against a HOFer. This isn't necessarily "better stats". I look at it like if I was starting a team full of rookies, who would I build it around. This kids stats will blow Murphy's out of the water by the EOY anyway.

Josh Hamilton (ML leader in RBI's) was traded because of Jay Bruce. The Reds felt Hamilton was dispensable because of how good Bruce is. There is not one tam in MLB that wouldn't take Bruce over Murphy... including the Rangers.

One stat you are missing on Longoria. 6 game winning hits and he is playing on the first place team.... partly because of him. You have to take intangables into consideration. The numbers (that count) are very close. At the end of the day it's who has the most runs. Very close...

Forfeited Turn

Hardest I've ever had to research for a TD.

It is very hard... I was thinking about this a while back. There have been quite a few impact rookies this year compared to most. Good argument

Campillo, Cueto are a couple of other arguments for SP
Devine, and Sherzer for RP

I love Bruce, but it's too early...

Volquez isn't a rookie

upton, where is upton?

May 30, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Upton is not a rookie either.

I like Murphy over Bruce. Bruce needs more playing time to prove himself, whiel Murphy has been pretty consistent all season.

I like Longoria over DeWitt. Way more potential and has been the better player thusfar.

I like Janish over Tolbert. Better stats.

May 30, 2008  08:42 PM ET

RHater-Potential isn't a factor. This is about current stats. Longoria hasn't been the better player. DeWitt has better stats than him.

Curious if you're using that argument for Bruce over Murphy, why not use it for Kershaw over Jurrjens.

June 1, 2008  04:10 AM ET

Sorry to double post, but Irish that argument is ridiculous, current stats don't indicate how good a player actually is, there's nowhere near enough data available. I'd guarantee that a guy like Bruce will have better stats than Murphy at the end of this year, which is both of their rookie year. I believe that would make him the better rookie. A month ago would your best rookie pitcher have been Cueto? You bet it would have, and it would have been wrong, for this exact reason, just like if you used that logic the Cy Young would have gone to Cliff Lee a month ago. It's why players have a rookie year, not a rookie month, it's why the big awards, the awards people pay attention to, are season awards. Jay Bruce will be better over the course of his career, that's not the point. The point is that he'll be better over the course of this year of his career than Murphy, that's what makes him the better Rookie. Look at what Braun did last year. I'm pretty sure he wasn't eligible to win National League April Rookie of the Month because he wasn't in the National League in April, just like Jay Bruce wasn't. He would have won it though if he'd hit the way he's hitting so far, and he would have made a run for Player of the Month, assuming he hit anywhere near the way he's hitting now. He won't keep this up, but he'll keep being better than Murply, this year, next year, and over the course of his career.

June 1, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Boz, comparing the 2 is ridiculous.... Jay Bruce was the Min League POY last year. And his start in the bigs has been more impressive than Kershaw's, wouldn't you say? Besides, Jurrjens might be the better pitcher out of the two. Murphy is NOT better than Bruce

And add a 3 for 5 day, 3 runs, and a game winning-walk off HR to Bruce's resume.... if this kid isn't all everything, you are nuts
