These would be the most outstanding Franchises over the course of their history:

In order:

1. The New York Yankees
2. The LA Lakers
3. Dallas Cowboys
4. Boston Celtics
5. GB Packers

"American" Franchises eliminates some really great Canadian clubs but...

New York Yankees
Green Bay Packers
Boston Celtics
Minneapolis/ LA Lakers
Detroit Red Wings

NFL: Nothing against the Cowboys, but you put them AHEAD of Green Bay?
-Dallas has a total of 5 championships, same as Pittsburgh and San Fransisco.
-Green Bay has 9 total championships and was the face of football in the early 20th century.

NBA: This could have gone either way in terms of order. The Lakers have more appearances while the Celtics have more titles. I put the Cs ahead because their dynasties were just more amazing.

NHL: You completely ignored hockey- The Red Wings have a total of 22 appearances in championship games and have won 10 titles. Detroit is the most decorated American Hockey Team, and certainly deserves to be on this list.

Here's the thing. I didn't only choose mine based of championship wins. When it comes to a succesful Franchise, you have to consider the following:

Brand
Marketability
Ticket Sales
Popularity in the nation

Using those in addition to rings leads me to put Dallas ahead of GB. They have a larger "brand" they make more money then GB, they are referred to as "America's Team" . Ticket Sales and popularity in the nation trump GB. They will after all have the alrgest stadium soon

Your correct I ignored hockey completly. Why? Same reasons as above, they ahve a great brand IN HOCKEY. But how many folks do you see sporting RedWings gear outside of the 313?

I put the Lakers ahead because one they ahve one championships more recently then the Celtics, and have a huge following, true the Celts pull in NE, but the Lakers soak up the Left coast, some desert states,a nd heck even a few lone fans back in Minn. The Lakers get love fromt eh Hollywood set which makes people watch them even if their not watching the game.

The Staple center was still packed when they were just ok, the Celtics couldn't fill their arena until the big deal was signed this season.

Excellent points. But your title says "All-Time".

The Packers were founded in 1919, which is more than 40 YEARS before the Cowboys existed. When football was in its infancy, it was teams like Green Bay who fanned the flames of popularity.

The Cowboys are one of the most successful teams of the modern era, but unless "all-time" has been redefined, you're ignoring decades of history and influence.

The Green Bay Packers have the oldest team name in the NFL, those most championships of any porfessional football team, and signify football's rise in America.

And what is it with the anti-hockey stuff? You may not consider it as popular a sport as football or baseball, but hockey has a long tradition in this country. Detroit is called Hockeytown for a reason- one of the original six teams that help establish the NHL, the Red Wings have won more titles than any other US team.

You can't leave out hockey.

As for the Cs/ Lakers- again, I could go either way on the order there, but the Celtics dynasty of the 50s and 60s has been named one of the greatest sports dynasties in histories. To me, that gives a slight edge.

Let me say this, I am a huge Hockey fan. So yes I can leave Hockey out. I already justified my posistion on that, so I will leave it at what I wrote earlier.

You have to factor marketability into the equation, I don't disagree with any points you brought up about GB, however from a marketing standpoint they have not maximized like Dallas has. I also have to consider "brand" and the Cowboys "brand" is worth more in a shorter time the GB.

The Celtics did dominate then but the Lakers continue to have success in each decade. They run a better operation then the Celtics. Bus is one of the most influential owners in the game.

Do you really consider franchise success to be equivalent to marketing success? REALLY?

The whole POINT of having a sports team is to compete and win. Sports are competition, not commericalism.

If you wanted to make a list of the franchises that sell the most jerseys, I wouldn't have argued. But you're talking about OUTSTANDING FRANCHISES.

And yet the winningest franchise in the HISTORY of the NFL isn't the top football team on ytour list? A franchise that symbolizes football in America? A team built on LEGENDs like

Vince LOMBARDI
Curly LAMBEAU
Don HUTSON
Ray NITSCHKE
(and more recently) Brett FAVRE

The Pack had SIX TITLES under their belts before the Cowboys were even born! How can you honestly compare?

It's because of franchises like Green Bay that the COwboys were even able to exist at all.

Your justification for leaving out the NHL is that no one outside of Michigan is sporting Red Wings gear?

Weak.

The Wings have won twice as many titles as the Cowboys. I don't care if I see fewer Osgood sweaters than Romo jerseys, I'm going to put Detroit on this list because they have been champions and contenders since the 1930s.

- You have the most successful MLB team
- You have the most successful NBA teams
-You have the most successful NFL team (in the wrong order)

But you simply cannot make a list of "the most outstanding franchises" and then omit the most successful hockey team in the country. It makes no sense.

porkins, has more well rounded teams in red wings replacing the cowboys. The cowboys are popular now but the argument explains it best.

Prodigy - "They have a larger "brand" they make more money then GB, they are referred to as "America's Team""

#1 - They're only referred to as America's Team because of Jerry Jones' self-proclamation of it being it.
#2 - Couldn't find it, but the Packers merchandise sales are as good as Dallas'
#3 - I've found more international Packer fans than Cowboy fans
#4 - Porkins got this wrong, but 12 Championships & counting.

May 30, 2008  12:52 PM ET

I think a team such as the Red Sox deserves that last spot much more than the Red Wings.

Maybe not, but Red Wing hockey has won championships more consistently than the BoSox

You know I love the Sox, Ghost- but you're thinking "right now", not all-time. Boston had 80+ years of futility, and I just can't forget that when picking 5 franchises.
