Rules: The player must have played for at least 5 years in that time period and only the stats for the time period can be counted.

My choice is easy. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest offensive linemen in NFL history...Cincinnati lengend Anthony Munoz.

I'll start off by listing his accomplishments, for those who don't already know. (Shame on you if thats the case lol)

11 consecutive Pro Bowls
9 1st team All Pro selection
3 time Offesnive Lineman of the Year
4 time NFLPA Offensive Linemen of the Year
Member of the 80's All Decade team
Member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time team

Known for his strength and agility, Munoz used his abilities to fend off the quick defensive ends. His work ethics, hard work and dedication is still revered to this day. His workout routine kept him in top physical form and that showed on the field and throughout his tenure in the NFL. Munoz only missed 3 games from injury during his long 13 year career.

Munoz was an elite player from the moment he set foot on the field up to his retirement.

Ok....Lets see if I can pull a rabbit out of my ****. This is the definition of a up-hill battle. Good Luck Guru

My Pick: Mike Webster

9x Pro Bowl
10X All Pro
4x Super Bowl Champ
NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team
NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
NFL 1970s All-Decade Team

Per Wikipedia...."While the Steelers do not retire numbers, Webster's #52 has not been reissued by the team since he retired and it is generally understood that no Steeler will wear that number in the foreseeable future."

Now Webster was the Anchor of the very first Dynasty in NFL history. There is no question of that. He was the one responsible for getting the team goin. He was the team captian for a record 9 straight seasons.

Let me repeat that.....

MIKE WEBSTER was the team captian for a record 9 straight seasons. That's voted on by the players and they picked Mike over: Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Jack Lambert, Jack Hamm, and Mel Blount. On a HOF laden team, his peers considerd him to be the leader of the team....His peers considered him the unwavering foundation for the NFL's first dynasty

Wow, caught me by surprise Goodell. Bruce Matthews, imo, would be the only one who can mentioned in the same breathe as Munoz. Though Webster is a great pick, he isnt the best pick.

Lets do a quick rundown on Webster & his accompishments you posted.

9x PBer? Impressive. BUT, only 5 of those as a starter. Munoz? 10 of 11 years.

10x All Pro? Very nice. BUT, only 5 of those he was elected to the 1st team.

Just like Webster, Munoz #78 will never be worn by another Bengals player.

Though Websters postseason accolades far exceed that of Munoz due to the combined efforts of multiple HOFers. In Bengals history, their best years in their franchise just so happen to be when Munoz was in the lineup. Coincidence? I dont think so. The arrival of Munoz also turned an aging QB, Ken Anderson, into an instant All Pro/Pro Bowl QB. Coincidence? Not likely. During Munoz tenure, he anchored a team that took the declining Bengals into SB contenders. Losing both times, in very close heartbreaking games, to someone by the name of Joe Montana. I dont think anyones ever heard of that guy.

Team captain might impress some, but not me. JP Losman was the Bills captain for goodness sake!

"Team captain might impress some, but not me. JP Losman was the Bills captain for goodness sake! "

Cmon Guru...This is a uphill battle already, no need to be throwing in cheap shots ;)

Webster was the Anchor of the first Dynasty. A heavy burden for a team full of All time Greats. For you to say that no one will wear Munoz Jersey isnt that impressive. No doubt is Munoz the best player in the history of the Bengals, but thats not saying too much considering they are historicaly one of the worst franchise's in the NFL. They are usually picking in the top 10 every draft

"The arrival of Munoz also turned an aging QB, Ken Anderson, into an instant All Pro/Pro Bowl QB. Coincidence? Not likely."

Dont act like Munoz was the one who turned it around for Ken Anderson.... The Bengals made the playoffs in '72 and '75 WITHOUT Munoz. And who was the starting QB?? Ken Anderson...Anderson made the PB the same amount of times without Munoz, as WITH Munoz..Twice

While Webster was in Pitt, they were in the top 10 for offense a mind boggling 10 DIFFERENT SEASONS. That's rushing and passing combined. Ten times over a career that spanned 14 seasons.

True, the Bengals are historically one of the worse franchises in history, BUT with Munoz, they became contenders. Anchoring that offense to 2 Superbowl berths.

Bengals With Munoz(13 years):
2 Superbowl appearances
3 Division titles
5 season above .500

Bengals without Munoz(26 years):
0 Superbowl appearances
0 playoff wins
3 division titles
7 seasons above .500

Its safe to say that with the acquisition of Munoz, the Bengals saw the best years of their franchise.

"Dont act like Munoz was the one who turned it around for Ken Anderson "

I'll say it again, Munoz did turn it around for Anderson. Now I didnt say Anderson wasnt any good. I clearly said he was declining in his career. By the time Munoz was drafted, Anderson was in his 10th season. Not only was he older, his numbers were also declining dramatically. 1976 was his last PB, pre-Munoz. His numbers during that 4-5 year span? 2120 yards per season, 43 tds & 57 ints. His numbers, after Munoz rookie year? 3754 yards, 29 tds & 10 ints. En route to his ONLY All Pro selection. Again, coincidence?

Munoz also recorded 4 rec tds in his career. Further proving his importance to his team & his versatility.

I can play that game!

With Mike Webster the Steeler's won 9 games or more 11 out 14 years....

With Anthony Munoz, the Bengals won 9 games or more 4 out of 13 years..

With Mike Webster, the Steelers were UNDER .500 a total of 4 seasons..

With Anthonly Munoz, the Bengals were under .500 a total of 7 times..

So for over half of Munoz's career, the Bengals were sub-par team. Also, Webster played with Bradshaw, Harris, Swann and the rest of em only until 1982 and 1983 respectivley. So after the Steeler Dynasty was over, he carried on thier winning ways. He was as consistent on day 1 of training camp, and he was the day he retired.

While Webster was the C the Steelers continued to make the playoffs after most HOFer's retired. Webster was the C for 4 QB's and all 4 QB's took the Steeler's to the playoffs. Those QB's are Bradshaw, Cliff Stoudt (WHO??), Mark Malone and Bubby Brister. These QB's are not of Boomer's stature...Who the Hell is Cliff Stoudt and Mark Malone??? Webster also blocked for 6 different RB's that led the Steelers in rushing.

Not only was he a beast, but he had to deal with change almost every season after Bradshaw and Harris were done

Good TD!

Great call by Goodell. I will hold my vote for now, but the commish picked the lineman that is clearly the greatest of all time.

May 30, 2008  04:01 PM ET

Lmao.

May 30, 2008  04:05 PM ET

Great call by Goodell. I will hold my vote for now, but the commish picked the lineman that is clearly the greatest of all time.
