With the #1 seeded Lakers and Celtics each disposing of their conference Final opponent,we have reached the climax of yet another NBA season.

The Celtics, are already one of the great turnaround teams in the history of sports, going from the worst record in the NBA,to a 66-16 record. The LA Lakers,go from the summer opera known as Kobe Bryant to bound together and with the help of a few aquisitions, become the #1 seed in the western conference.

Now,Back to through history were this rivalry brought a new era into basketball with the matchups of Worthy,Kareem,Magic,West,Baylor for LA, and Bird,"Hondo",The Cooz,McHale,Russell,,and others duked it out in a nonstop battle for supremecy as the dominant team of the era.

Now it's happening again.Boston has the bound to go down as Legend "Big Three" of KG,Ray Allen, Paul Pierce. As well as an inexperienced but talented point gurad,a strong bench and a set of veterans who can step in and lead. With the Lakers, you have the impatient star, who got his way,and is now happy in hollywood. With the unique bench with the Likes of Walton,Turiaf,Farmar, and others emerging as go to guys off the bench,as well as Gasol.

It's best for everyone.More

I really hate hate hate doing this via NMI. But Cincy, you're falling victim to the Captain Obvious Throwdown syndrome. I like where you're coming from, and you spoke knowledgebly. But anyone who knows basketball for the last 30 years can accurately state that Celts-Lakers is the best for 'everyone'...so to speak. But I'll argue it gently and without sarcasm.

When Michael Jordan was rattling off championships in the 1990's...were we concerned with his opponents? Were we concerned with the popularity of the sport and what was best for everyone? Hell no...the NBA was MJ...and his success brought immediate publicity.

Dont you think that the best thing for the NBA would be having a dominant superstar (Kobe aside) simply running game over every team in the league and dominating the sport? Because thats what Jordan did. Kobe hasn't yet. From what I recall, Jordan was IT. He was THE guy. And nobody suffered. What if Lebron carried his team year after year to title after title?

It'd be nice to re-introduce the Celts-Lakers rivalry. I love it. But would NY-LA be better? I hate to be a homer but why not? Best case scenario is not re-inventing rivalries.

This is too obvious.

No Im not tryong to be obvious as you're implying.

I mean, this brings the fans back to their heyday, the days of the short-shorts,and the legends facing off in epic matchups. The NBA makes mucho money in this, and it certainly helps the image painted in the heads of NBA fans set in place by Tim Donaghy and the betting scandel,as well as numorous fights, and brawls over the last few years.

Kobe and his sidekicks finally making it back to the finals without the Diesel facing the Big Three,is a great way to get fans back into the game.I mean let's be frank here,The Spurs and Pistons matchup in 04 drew one of the lowest ratings in Finals history, while The Lakers and Celtics rivalry is now recontinued with this great matchup.

They're both number one seeds, they're both identifiable by familair star faces, they're both from large markets.Heck, even the celebrity's are back at the LA games and Jerry Beuss has the young ladies at his sides again(so we know it's nice for Jerry)

These finals will be covered madly by media outlets, even the ones that have nearly nothing to do with sports.Much publicity and excitement will come to the cities.

This matchup is good for theNBA,fans, and all

Everyone loves an epic matchup Cincy. I'll agree. But those epic matchups were won and lost by the likes of Bird, Magic, etc. Jordan took a Bulls team to the finals and won how many times? It's about the stars. It always has been. And while Kobe is a star and Garnett MAY be a legit hall of famer, we can't re-introduce ghosts because its easy.

Boston is the 23rd most populated market in the US. As far as advertising dollars are concerned. Cities like NY, Chicago, and Houston would destroy ad revenue from Boston. Thats math - and I'm not kidding this time.

Celebrities have always been at the games Cincy. They didn't just show up because Kobe re-ignited the team without big diesel. You are right - Spurs-Pistons drew awful ratings. But thats like comparing lions to lambs...of course that series would draw awful.

What was consistent in earlier NBA years was the presence of players that were able to transcend the game - players that could dominate the sport. KG doesn't do that for me. Kobe is close to doing it - BUT he hasn't won a title by himself. Jordan beat the Jazz, the Trailblazers, I believe the Suns....I mean cmon...who even bothered with what team he faced?

And one legend in Kobe vs 3 great players isn't an epic one?The defensive player of the year, the great shooter and the ringleader who hasn't been able to get over the hump in Pierce, this isn't epic?

Everyone will remember this as when McHale gave a lot to get a lot and recieved the better end of the deal to make a team that will go down as one of the best in our era if they finish it.If the Lakers win it all, they will remember the early and preseason chaos induced by Kobe and then forgotten as he won MVP and led his team to the ship without Shaq.

But in the crazed city of Boston fanatics and the way they love their team there really speaks wonders to how they size up to the biggest of the teams and markets.

So,give me a matchup,if you think this won't do wonders for everyone what will?

These guys, matchups, smack talk(and lots of it I imagine)media hype,as well as other factors make this. And yes,we all know Jordan changed the game forever, but he's not in it.Kobe is the closest thing in the NBA to an MJ,and him against Boston provides for the setting of an amazing NBA Finals.

Using Porkins' references, he's right. Boston IS in the top 10 in media markets. I mistakenly used population as per media market. That said - there are still numerous teams above Boston there. That includes Dallas, Philly, Chicago, and NY.

I simply don't think this matchup can simply be called the 'best for everyone'. I don't think people outside of California and New England will think this is great - besides basketball purists.

Yes - it is intriguing to have the Celtics and Lakers meet again. But when was the last time these 2 teams played anything meaningful? I dont think re-introducing Celts Lakers Part Deux is going to make everyone happy...and somehow people think this will create new fans? Having 3 straight matchups of Kobe-Lebron would do that.

(If I were going to start a TD and think about the most glorious matchup possible - I'd pick Celtics-Lakers....which is why I pointed this out as being obvious)

There were legendary players in those series' long ago. The only player fitting the bill is Kobe. If this series goes in 4 games, it will not have been best for everyone. Wish I could discuss further. That said...I think I took a close-to-unwinnable-TD

LSUrocks,we meet again.Good luck.

May 30, 2008  11:52 PM ET

Well I decided not to take it, but I would like to point out that it's not the nest match up for everyone, don't beleive me, ask Detroit, frankly every team in the NBA think that they would be the better match up.

May 31, 2008  12:21 AM ET

Well,Good luck dizzle.

May 31, 2008  12:30 AM ET

Good luck dude.

Tough call, but this is too obvious.

May 31, 2008  12:40 AM ET

So you couldn't say a big market team, like NY vs The Bulls,or pitted some other teams?I was not trying to be obvious,I was trying to find someone who disagreed, but this is your side,so be it.

May 31, 2008  12:44 AM ET

My point is...there aren't alot of people who would disagree with a Celts-Lakers showdown being 'good' for the NBA since they are old rivals. I believe you when you said you werent trying...but if you found someone I'd be shocked. I'd be even more shocked if you found someone who could beat you. I'll try.

May 31, 2008  12:45 AM ET

Im throwin an argument in there and then retiring for the night. Its late and I'm beat.

May 31, 2008  12:52 AM ET

K,man.

May 31, 2008  12:54 AM ET

Lol, what about the players on the Spurs and Pistons. I don' t think they would agree this is best.

Okay, maybe I should have considered the title more.

May 31, 2008  12:57 AM ET

Moondizzle - You are a great TDer and this is the first argument of yours that I've ever read

How you have 18 losses and gits on the leaderboard have less shows what a stupid popularity contest this is

May 31, 2008  01:08 AM ET

he is often sarcastic and humorous in his TD's, explaining the losses

May 31, 2008  01:08 AM ET

Beleive it or not some people actualy read and vote based on the arguments.

May 31, 2008  01:11 AM ET

You're on hunger strike?Why?

May 31, 2008  01:17 AM ET

^------ there were 15 other teams from both conferences that could he have been chosen for this TD...and personnely i thought that a Hornets and Magic nba finals would have been great...two new on the rise teams, with fresh new faces going for a title...

May 31, 2008  01:18 AM ET

not obvious at all...

May 31, 2008  01:20 AM ET

spurs pistons- two teams of the old guys going at it...magic hornets two of the new teams going at it...there's two great match ups that might have been better than this series...

May 31, 2008  01:34 AM ET
