I'll have to go with the man who's record for most TD's thrown was just broken this past season.
Dan Marino...
1984 NFL MVP
17 Seasons
9 Pro Bowls
420 TD's
+168 in TD-INT differential
61,361 yards
Still hold record for most yards passing in a single season (5084 yards in 1984)
6 seasons with over 4000+ yards passing
13 seasons with over 3000+ yards passing
13 Games with 400+ yards passing (4 of them during his 1984 MVP season)
63 Games with 300+ yards passing
Only NFL QB to throw 40+TD's in 2 seasons (48 in 84 and 44 in 86)
37 - 4th quarter comebacks (3rd all time)
147-93 regular season record
Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005
Lost in Super Bowl XVII his only Super Bowl appreance.

I was wondering whether you'd whip out Marino or Barry Sanders. Now I know. Luckily, I wasn't going to pick either one.
My selection is Alan Cedric Page, 1971 NFL MVP.
Since an MVP award was first given, only TWO defensive players have won the award. Imagine how good you would have to be to win an award that is typically reserved for offensive "skill positions".
Other than Page, the onyl defensive player to win was LT, and we all remember how ridiculously good he was.
Alan Page is arguably the best defensive tackle of all time, and is certainly among the top 3.
I won't try to win this by comparing a DT's stats to those of a QB, but I will note that Page is a Hall of Famer with:
15 Seasons
9 Pro Bowl appearances
11 total All-pro seasons
2 NFL Defensive POY awards
1 NFC Defensive POY award
Page was in the trenches, and yet managed to play in an astronishing 218 STRAIGHT GAMES. In other words, the man NEVER missed a game.
Page is the gold standard for defensive tackles.
I take nothing away from Marino. Fantastic QB. But relative to their respective positions, Page was the better player.
Foosball said 06/02, 04:06 PM
It will be very difficult to compare a QB to DT. So lets compare Football player to Football player
In 1999 Page he was ranked # 34 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players - Marino was ranked # 27.
Marino held 22 NFL records in his career, 4 of them were broken by Brett Farve this past season. And still holds 13 of them in including...
Most Passing Yards in a season 5084 yards 1984 (the only player to throw for 5000+ yards in a season)
Most Games 63 with 300+ Yards
Most Games 21 with 4+ TD
Most Games 6 with 4+ TD passes in a season 1984
Most Seasons 5 Leading NFL in Attempts (1984,86,88,92 & 1997)
Most Seasons 6 Leading NFL in Completions (1984,85,86,88,92 & 97)
100 TD Passes in Fewest # of Games to Start Career- 44
200 TD passes in Fewest # of Games to Start Career- 89
300 TD passes in Fewest # of Games to Start Career- 157
Marino Retired after the 1999 season. At the start of the 2000 season the Dolphins retired Marino's # 13 the only other # the Dolphins had retired up to that point was Bob Griese's # 12. Now 8 seasons later the Dolphins are still trying to find a replacement at QB for the Irraplaceable Marino.

Hey..Marino was great at putting up big numbers. No doubt.
But we're not talking "great". We're talking "the best".
Think of the best defensive players you know:
Butkus
Reggie
Deacon
Lott
Bob Lilly
Lambert
etc. (can't list them all, but...)
TOTAL: ZERO MVPs
Does this give you some idea of how ridiculous you had to be to win and MVP as a DEFENDER?
LT won because he revolutionized the OLB position. And years before, Alan Page had done the same to DT.
He transformed the position into a pass-rushing threat. An unstoppable sack machine, Page is the all-time leader from the DT spot. 2nd all-time in safeties. He MASTERED the DT role.
He was 6'4" 245- underweight for DT even in then, but despite his stature LED one of the greatest defenses EVER.
You may have heard of...
THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS
They scared the CRAP out of the league, driving the Vikings to 4 Superbowls, including 3 in 4 years at one point.
Since Page's Purple People Eaters, Minny's D has never been the same, and has not returned to the Superbowl.
Meanwhile:
With Marino- ZERO titles.
Since Marino- ZERO titles.
Sounds to me like they replaced him just fine.
Foosball said 06/03, 09:18 AM
Marino is always listed among the top 5 Quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. And would be in the top 2 or 3 if not for one thing, and that is a Super Bowl ring. He is often considered as the best player to never win a ring.
Marino held or tied 22 NFL records when he retired, and to this day still has one of the best single season records that may not be broken until the NFL lengthens its season to more than 16 games, (5084 yards - Most Passing Yards in a season 1984). He held the season TD record for 20 years.
Yes it is difficult to compare an offensive player to a defensive player but I keep coming back to that 1999 Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Football Players...
Page was ranked # 34 - Marino was ranked # 27.
When you look at Marino has achieved in his Hall Of Fame Career there is always one thing that people look for when saying whether this guy was the best or that was the best, and that is a championship. And that goes for all sports.
Marino got to the Super Bowl and ended his Hall of Fame Career without a title. He is clearly the Best NFL MVP to not have gotten a Super Bowl Ring, and was head and shoulders above Page.
Porkins said 06/03, 10:37 AM
TSN mean nothing. Offensive players are ALWAYS rated higher than defense, which is a central point to my whole argument.
You throw a bunch of numbers up there that LOOK flashy, and rely on the name MARINO to pull this one out. And you say Marino was "head and shoulders above Page"?
HOW?
You never once rebutted my arguments. You barely adressed Page at all.
You know what I call that?
All SIZZLE and no SAUSAGE.
Marino SHOULD have put up big totals. The guy chucked it up there 35 times a game! Miami IGNORED rushing while Marino was in town.
BUT look at his numbers that aren't aggregate totals:
16th in RATING
35th in Yards/ Attempt
31st in completion %
And in his 1 shot at a ring, he barely showed up. 2 picks, 4 sacks
A big part of the QB position is LEADING your team.
Was Marino anywhere close to best at that?
NO.
Page was GROUNDBREAKING. He defined and redefined his position.
Known for his revolutionary pass-rush, kick blocking, and toughness, he owned offenses and was an IRONMAN who didn't miss a SINGLE GAME in his career.
To win an MVP, a DEFENSIVE player has to be BETTER than great. He has to be the BEST.
Just like Page.
