NCshvDavid - you seen Leroy!! said 06/02, 08:26 PM
Who is the Better coach?
Phil Jackson or Pat Riley
(not counting this year)
I will take Pat Riley
Team 1
Takes over a 7-4 team coming off a first round playoff loss- goes 50-21 and wins title- and then coaches the team of the decade-
Going to the Finals EVERY year but TWO
Team 2
Takes a New York Team that went 39-43 and leads them to round 2 with a 50 win season - leads them to a 57,60 and 55 win season- plus the last time they went to the Finals
The Knicks have been to ONE finals since 1973- Riley
The Knicks have had ONE 60 win season since 1970 - Riley
Team 3
Took over a 32 50 team- won 42 games and went to the playoffs the next 6 years - the Heat had 2 trips the previous 7 years
Next? Took a 11-10 Team to the TITLE
In 10 years as coach of the Heat- 8 Trips to the Playoffs
All ther coaches- 4 trips TOTAL
Phil
Team 1
Took a team that lost in the Eastern Finals
and Lost in the East Finals- No change
Team 2
Took a team coming off a Western Finals Loss ( Other than a strike year)
and won a title
So in 2 teams Phil went up ONE round
In 4 teams- Pat went up SIX rounds including a Non-playoff team!
You have to BUILD PJ

Phil Jackson is the better of the two coches
He has won nine total championships as a coach (about to win #10)
Has been to the playoffs every year he has coached
out of 17 seasons he has been the playoffs 17 times (as a coach)
took a talented but troubled lakers team in 2000 and took them to a 67-15 record. Hey also won the title that year.
holds the best winning percentage in the playoffs as a coach
Coached a chicago bulls team to the best record the NBA has ever had (72-10) They started the season 41-3
Phil could be the best coach of all time
NCshvDavid - you seen Leroy!! said 06/03, 03:31 PM
Let me ask you a serious Question
Has Phil ever... EVER won a title WITHOUT having TWO of the FIVE best players in the NBA by Pos?
Chicago
SF- Pippen - Best SF in the NBA at that time- best Def by FAR- I mean other than Mullen, was any even CLOSE?
SG- Jordan- Best SG of All Time
Lakers
C- O'Neal was the Best in the NBA
SG- Best in the NBA
Whoa! Way to step out on a Limb there coach Guru!!
Now, I will give him FULL credit for winning titles and managing egos
But When- in 23 years in the NBA coaching
Riley has taken over team that did NOT make the playoffs and made them winners- Phil has Never done that
and other than Magic- WHEN has Pat had the best player at his position?
Worthy < Bird and Moses > Kareem at that time.
With the Knicks? Hakeem was better than Pat
With the Heat? Kobe > Wade- and Shaq by then was a SHELL of waht he was.
Phil has NEVER taken a Lotto team and made them winners
Pat has
Phil has taken Winning teams and made them champions
Pat has done that as well
Nolan Adair* BS said 06/04, 12:15 PM
even though Phil has had good players on his team does not mean that he was anot a big reason why they won.
Let's take the pistons for example. Flip Saunders had ld his team to 3 straight NBA Eastern Conference Finals. And after the third year of not making it to the NBA Finals, the front office blamed Saunders for not etting his team in the finals.
NCshvDavid - you seen Leroy!! said 06/04, 12:26 PM
ok, and name me the playerS thats right I said PLAYERS as in MORE than one- on the Pistons where they have the BEST in the NBA in their Postion
C- Detroit Advantage- But not even the Best in the Central
PF- KG is FAR better- but is he the Best in the NBA? He is a LOT closer than Wallace
SF- Not even CLOSE to the best SF- again Boston had the Adv
SG- Ok the best player on the Pistons- but is he even top 5 in the NBA at his position? Top 7? is he better than Ray Allen?
PG- same thing- is CB top 5 in the NBA?
This only helps my point! Flip has had a TON if success in taking a CHAMPIONSHIP team and not able to succeed with them! BOTH Pat and Phil have done this-
BUT- only Pat has taken a LESSER team and won the title- you cannot tell me how Phil has BUILT a team OR won without a top 5 player in the NBA on his squad!
Nolan Adair* BS said 06/05, 10:48 AM
you could the best people at each position on an NBA team and they probably would not do as well as Phil Jackson's teams have done.
They would be really really good, but Phil jackson does something different with his players.
He teaches them how to be good team players. That is one of the main things that he stresses to all of his teams. Even after the Lakers had won two consecutive championships he still emphasized teamwork.
Kobe was the biggest ball hog in the NBA in the early 2000's. Now he shares the ball with his teammates and knows what it takes to win a championship. He realized that the game did not revolve around him and that you must get your teammates involved in order to win.
Phil Jackson taught Kobe Bryant how to be an excellent team player.
PHIL JACKSON IS A BETTER COACH THAN PAT RILEY. PHIL JACKSON WILL COACH A LOT LONGER THAN PAT AND WILL EVENTUALLY PASS HIM IN WINS (you said i could not talk about this yar, not next year).

Phil has had one team ever that overachieved and when his teams can't win the championship they end up quitting and not competing in the end

The Bulls had a whopping two game dropoff in wins the year after Jordan retired. That tells me one of two things. Either MJ's impact on a team is overrated or Jackson deserves a lot more credit for the Bulls success. I have to go with the latter instead of the former.

Yeah, Nolan. Even I saw it, and I'm not even in the tourney. Anyways, you can make a definite arg. for Phil Jackson. Don't **** and complain. It happens in tournament TDs. Its not the worst topic you could get.

Phil Jackson coached Jordan and Kobe. How hard is that really? "Uh, game's on the line. Jordan/Kobe, you take the shot." WOW! Nice coaching there Phil. Pat Riley ACTUALLY coached 'em up.
Sound arguements by both, but in the end Phil is a coat-tail rider.

And Phil's "Triangle" is bullsh.it. Didn't look like a triangle when Kobe was killing my Spurs. Looked like, "Uh, Kobe, take the shot."

Phil Jackson is a better coach than Pat Riley. I'm sorry but 17 for 17! Not any coach can do that. Granted, he has coached superstars, but its not like Pat Riley hasnt. Plus, its not like having 2 superstars on your team guarantees you'll win the title.

exactly my point. The celtics have 3 superstars and the lakers have at least two. One of them is not going to win the title.
