BEST Original NES Sports Game

Ok, someone else made something about games and gave me the idea. I guess rules are any game having to do with sports on the original NES console. Im going to go ahead and rule out duck hunt just to eliminate confusion.

By "BEST", i guess i mean a combination of the most epic, playable, fun game... total package game to come out on the NES, theres a few to choose from.

This is a tough decision, but i choose Mike Tysons Punch Out!

There are quite a few awesome nes games out there, but i think this one is the best of them all. Its fun, even years later (harder when youre older for some reason it seems), its epic, EVERYONE knows punchout, and i think it is just an all around fun game to play.

I mean, even though its single player, you can still have fun while multiple people played it alternating.

Should be a fun TD without much cursing huh?

Hard to choose ONE best sports game on the NES. They were pretty much all fun. ExciteBike was one of my favorites. As was Track and Field. Power Pad anyone? Your choice was also quite fun. But if I absolutely had to choose ONE, then it would have to be Tecmo Bowl.

I don't know if EVERYONE knows about a boxing game, but I'd say that EVERYONE knows about a football game....and probably STILL one of the best football games ever.

Montana to Rice/Taylor was greatness. Bo knows touchdowns was a great saying. How about that tandem in Kansas City? To top it off, it was TWO PLAYER!! No one really wants to watch someone else play. They wanna be in on it. That's how friendly rivalries start. To this day, whenever a football game (Madden) come out, I have to play my friend Cowboys against 49ners. And that started all the way back from Tecmo Bowl. Too much fun to be contained in one video game...yet they somehow managed to get it done.

Good luck.

Good choice. (Tecmobowl or Tecmo Suprbowl?)

I agree 100% that Tecmo was awesome, i played it quite a bit as well with friends when i was younger. BUT, it was a relatively simple game to get down and it came down to a good guess rather than skill sometimes. I loved the cutscenes, and multiplayer...

HOWEVER, punchout could still be entertaining to multiple people (not as well as a multiplayer game, but very well for a single player game). It featured mario as the ref... awesome. It was so fun, that no other boxing game (besides its own sequal) has been near as fun except maybe king of the ring series (which i disagree).

Knocking down the bull is a priceless memory for sports/video game fans. The game got progressively harder with a different type of challenge with every fighter, and making it pretty difficult to beat the game, made the continous gameplay and replayability a fun feature.

The original, Tecmo Bowl.

Relatively simple? All NES games are relatively simple. They used 2 buttons. But at least in Tecmo Bowl I had to avoid 11 guys. In Punch Out, all I had to do was move right or left and try to get a STAR to knockout the opponet. There was no "STAR" in Tecmo Bowl.

You want a challenge? Play against Bo Jackson. That's a challenge. He could run over his guys, as well as the other teams guys.

No, Punch wasn't "difficult" to beat. It was damn near impossible. To this day, I don't konw of anyone who beat the game from start to finish. And I don't see how NOT beating a game makes it fun. Not only that, football > boxing.

And I already said this, but I'll reiterate: 2 players is better than 1 player. Why do you think there is such a huge push for online muliplayer games now? Playing JUST the computer gets old.

You played against 9 guys in Tecmobowl.

Alrite, the game was very difficult with the last couple fighters, but it supplied codes for that so you could pick up where you left off and eventually beat the game.

And the first Tecmo Bowl was extremely easy. Of coure it was winnable, 4 year old girls could destroy in TecmoBowl... Punchout presented much more of a challenge when i was younger, though sacrificing replay. And yes, of course football is better than boxing to watch and enjoy in real life, but thats no comparison in the videogame world... lemmings was fun but i wouldnt watch a 100 little guys walking around on tv....

STOLE MY BIKE!

COVER YOUR EARS!! THIS CHARLATAN SPEAKS OF BLASHPHEMY AND LIES!! No way 4 year old girls beat Tecmo Bowl. And to mention such is a direct slight to everything I believe in. May the football gods have mercy on your soul.

Well, I'll take winning over getting beat down everyday of the week. Twice on Sundays. Pun intended. No one has fun losing...at least no red-blooded American. (You Frenchys I can't speak for)

"of course football is better than boxing to watch and enjoy in real life"

I agree with this, AND football games are more fun to play. Madden over Fight Night. Tecmo Bowl over Punch out. Same thing. I don't see huge Fight Night tournys like I see Madden tourneys. Hell, who is even on the Fight Night cover? I rest my case.

Wow.

Tecmo versus Punch Out. Talk about your legendary rumbles.

No doubt, Porkins.

I mentioned you in my recent blog. I didn't ask permission, so don't sue me.

I couldnt beat Mike.....I only made it to him a few times. At least in Tecmo Bowl winning was a obtainable and the Super Bowl, or "Tecmo Bowl" was winnable. Not true for Punch out....

Yeah both games were great. The first Mike Tysons Punchout is rare and worth alot of money, i actually own it. When Tyson went to prison they rereleased it under a different name and box, just Punch Out. So what happened was the original was vaulted and became an ebay vintage classic.

Now we have tecmo bowl which was a great great game.

I like the Punchout side because this TD has come up before and tecmo bowl is always mentioned, i like the orginality of having punch out.

I've never seen this TD before, Joe. So I apologize. I wanted to go Track and Field because of the Power Pad, but my heart is, and forever will be, with Tecmo Bowl.

June 3, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Tecmo Bowl & Punch Out are both on the Wii Virtual Console right?

June 3, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Excellent spin off TD guys. Tecmo Bowl fas great and any good NES fan knows Excite bike would have been a good call as well!

June 3, 2008  01:22 PM ET

I couldn't beat Mike either. I knocked him down twice, but he just gets right back up a takes my head off. True story: My cousin had a cheat code to get to the the last fight with Tyson. I don't know how many times he had to fight Tyson, but I saw him beat him. I think it was after about a couple of days and about 100 fights that he won.

That was Prodigy's TD (saying it would NOT be the greatest)...now he has one saying it lived up to the hype.

Gotta love it.

June 3, 2008  01:26 PM ET

wow, im getting crushed right now. Sorry i didnt know this had been done before... i was just going to run through every system over the next couple days since i can rarely think of a unique TD.

June 3, 2008  01:26 PM ET

No, no slandering. Just took a quote.

June 3, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Every time you make or take a TD I laugh at the wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tubemen. So please don't stop.
