In my opinion this is a fair matchup, but i'd have to side with LT. If i can think of 1 word to describe this man its TOUCHDOWN. He has reached the incredible #115 in a shorter time then any other player in NFL history and has never averaged less then 10 TD's a season. For those wondering, Emmit Smith was at 108 TD's at this point in his career. In the 2008 season, barring injury he should cruise past Marcus Allen as #2 all time with a meer 9 TD's. Going on his current pace if he averages his lowest total TD's per season (10) he'll be #1 in 5 years that puts him at 12 years in the league as it took Emmit Smith 14. While still in his prime he is more likely to get 15-18 TD's over the next 3 seasons then 10 which would close the gap even faster. Later on i will discuss other key stats, but tell me this, in the game of football, what is the most important number? If you guessed wins you are a football genius. And to get that, guess what you need? If you said points then you might be the next Einstein. With these stats, everyone knows that the measure of a running back is not only by mere rushing TD's, fortunatly thats not all i'm here to prove.

Unlike the peanut gallery below, I need not reference any grammar issues n the title of ur TD except 2 say I know what u meant.
I do not agree that touchdowns r the most important stat, nor do I agree that it is wins. A RB playing 4 a bad franchise his whole career is not less of a RB because of less red zone opportunities or less career wins.
I am most impressed with a RB who has the most combined yards from scrimmage n BOTH the running AND receiving + WINNING!
Lets start with yards rushing. Emmitt Smith-18,355. LT currently @ 10,650. Every year that Phillip Rivers proves not to be the offsetting threat to keep defenses honest like Troy Aikman was for Emmitt means that every year LT's yards are going to decrease or remain the same as his career averages. Can he get another 8000 yards with this new injury issue that popped up and will be a target next year for defenders to key on? I say no.
Receiving? Emmitt-3,224 LT has already surpassed him, but this can easily be explained by Moose Johnson: Emmitt was a better blocker than I was.
And if we focus on winning per you, who has a better Superbowl/playoff resume than Emmitt Smith? LT may never get a ring. ES=bling bling

In the interest of fairness, I know you didnt mean to leave no argument above (as you are brand new) so neither will I.

Apparently everyone is bent on this emmitt smith thing. The man had to play for 15 SEASONS to get his records, your'e telling me you put these two backs side by side for 10 years and ES is the better player. We arent talking about the fossils staying in the league just so they could have the record, hell Barry Sanders was better then Emmitt and his numbers prove it for the amount of time he was in the league, he could have easily had the rushing record. I'm talking about being the best. And still i have seen no evidence that ANY running back has been more productive at this point in their career. At least not all around the board. Hell ES rushing avg. is 4.2-Tomlinson 4.5. Another point Emmitt Smith had a grand total of 175 TD's over a 15 YEAR career while L Tisney has 136 at 7. Additionally in Emmitts 1st 7 years of play he had 30 fumbles, Tomlinson 24. Now lets take 7 of Emmitts/Tomlinsons BEST seasons in rushing/recieving/rushing TDs: Emmitt-10748 rushing/2206 recieving(3224 career)/112 rushing TD's. Now Ladanian-1065rushing/3375recieving/115 rushing TDs. Emmitts #'s say he has the most but NOT THE BEST. Thank you and sorry Dallas fans for bashing a great player.

I guess here is the thing you are not getting: Emmitt had a Hall of Fame QB and WR flanking him. He was NOT the feature of the Cowboys offense, just one of the cogs. LT is the MAN on the Chargers having to generate everything for that O to move. Emmitt did his work despite a prolific passing game. LT got his boatload of touches because he had none.
Let me also say here it is very difficult to compare RBs or any other position from different generations. LT is one generation removed from the mid-90s Cowboys dynasty so we are not exactly comparing apples to apples here.
Throw up all the stats you want. Bottom line is the last time we saw LT he was wearing a hoodie in the AFC Championship on the sideline injured instead of on the field as his team once again lost in the playoffs. In the playoffs/SB Emmitt Smith was money and there is a lot to be said for what you do in the REAL season versus the regular season.
15 seasons is HUGE for an RB to play these days. Who else can lasted for 15 years at that position? Another checkmark in Emmitts column for durability. You didnt see ES ever injured in the playoffs did you?
I disagree that Barry Sanders was better than Emmitt.

Report Offensive CommentI don't know about easy but LT does have a case. He's a better receiver then JB, Barry, OJ, Walter, Emmitt, Franco and ED. He has been a better pure runner then Thomas, Moore and Craig. Marshall Faulk is the only other back that really has a case for being a better all-around back,
TradeAngelos | 06/03/08, 01:50 PM
Report Offensive Comment^ what about blocking?
Porkins | 06/03/08, 01:51 PM

I agree with everything that tradeangelos just said

Report Offensive CommentAt this point in his career, going into his 8th season, tell me one back who was better? And please back it up with some stats

Report Offensive CommentPorkins as to your question earlier i was just looking at some stats and in the last 7 years, chargers QB's have been sacked 133 times compared to Peyton Manning getting sacked 135 in this time frame. How much does this have to do with LT i dont have an exact number. But the Colts have been regarded as one having one of the best O lines for a few years.
The_PTC | 06/03/08, 02:19 PM
Report Offensive Commentmore specific? I'm saying when LT retires he will be regarded as the best all around running back of all time that includes primarily rushing, recieving, TD's, YAC and blocking.

Report Offensive CommentYou're basing your argument on that he will continue to be in his prime for 3 more years? I would say thats tough to keep up in todays NFL. Injuries bring RB's down fast.
