You would think as a Boston Celtics fan, I would take Red.. Im not. I'm going with Phil Jackson. Red Auerbach was a great coach and an even better GM, but he wasn't and isn't the best coach. Despite the titles. As much as it kills me to say it, Phil Jackson is the better coach.

in 89-90 he got a team in the Bulls that had just made it to the eastern conference finals the season before. he had a situation where he was getting a winning team with a number of very good to great players. he was getting Jordan, Pippen, Horace Grant, Bill Cartwright, and John Paxson. He didn't have to actually do a whole lot of coaching. he got lucky and got maybe the greatest player of all time coming in to his prime in Jordan and he got a top 50 player coming in to his prime in Pippen. he also got a cast of very good players so really I dont think that the success of the Bulls was because Jackson is a great coach.

now lets fast forward to 99-00 when he takes over the lakers. again he inherits an already built team that was already making it to the playoffs. once again not only did he inherit a playoff team he inherited a team with great players. he inherited a young Kobe who just may be the greatest player of his generation and he inherited Shaq who is one of the greatest centers of his generation and is a top 50 player all time along with a supporting cast of good players. Jackson never was put in a situation where he was taking of a team that had been losing for awhile.

The Celtics were a struggling and sub par barely above 500 team prior to 1956-57 when they got Cousy .Cousy wasnt even drafted by the Celtics. He was on a team that folded and got sent to the C's in the dismantling of the team. In fact, Auerbach had the chance to draft him and didnt want him. Then he trades for the pick that would end up with Russell and then gets Heinson. They already had Bill Sharman. Red was a GREAT evaluator of talent -
There were only 8 teams in the league and they only played 72 games. They win the championship and the very next year with the SAME team, Russell goes down with an injury in game 3 and the C's lose 4-2.
For the entire length of Reds career in coaching after that, he fielded that team. He wins 8 straight then retires. Russell becomes player coach with basically the same team, and wins 2 of the next 3. It wasnt the coaching, it was the talent on the team. It was far superior to any other team. Who else was there besides Chamberlain and Baylor? I could argue that KC Jones or Tommy Heinson have stats almost as good as Red's. Red was an outstanding GM and could smell talent before he saw it. Thats how he won. I'll argue Phil's merit next

act as if he was playing a bunch of middle school teams. also you can say well Russell came in and won championships so it wasnt the coaching but those players had already learned from Red's coaching because he had them years before Russell even became coach. and it can also be said that since Red coached Russell and Bill was around for all that time he pretty much knew how to do things because he learned from being around Red.

being able to evaluate talent is a big part of coaching. you have to be able to tell what players of yours need to be out on the court and you have to know what combinations of players to put in at what times and so on. before Red the celtics had never had a winning season and Red was hired because the owner was desperate to try and turn the team in to a winner. so what happens he gets Red and boom the Celtics become winners. not only was Red having to coach players he was deciding on who to draft so he basically put his team together. Phil Jackson never had to put a team together he was like the Bill Russell of coaching he came in and got a job where a team was already put together and was already winning.

when PJ got to CHI, MJ was there 5 yrs..MJ joined the Bulls in 84. PJ ? 89.He took the same team Collins had and won rings. The exact definition of "coach" is someone in charge of training an athlete or team. The "coach" doesn't evaluate anyone other than the players on his team. The GM does.A coaches job is to take the players he has and win games. The only supertalent PJ had on the Bulls was MJ and Pippen.Kukoc?Harper?um no.Another part of his job is to manage his players so that they work together.EGO's left at the door.Jackson did that with Shaq and Kobe.He leaves the team, as does Shaq and the team goes from West champ to cellar the next yr. PJ comes back and takes the 38-48 team back to 45-37 and the playoffs. WITH almost the same TEAM Hamblen and Tomjanovich had. Your talking like he had a team stacked with HoF'ers every team he was with. 4 of the Celtics players on their 50-60's dynasty are top 50. You're talking total IMPACT on a team and Im talking coaching. Red had Cousy and Shrman and couldnt win UNTIL he GOT Russell This isnt about who has the most brilliant mind in Basketball because Phil Jackson couldnt assemble a PB&J sammich. But he can make what he HAS work.

lol ok let me break this to you the reason the Lakers went from western conference champs to sucking the next year is called they had to rebuild. you take the 03-04 Lakers and look at their playoff roster and then look at the roster they had for the 04-05 season. Off the top of my head here is who they were missing

Shaq
Payton
Malone
Fisher
Fox
Russell

so they lost 6 guys who played for them in the 03-04 playoffs and they lost their coach. now you ask yourself why is it that they sucked in 04-05? its because they were starting over with pretty much a whole new team. so the 04-05 year was more of a rebuilding year to get them ready for the years to come. so sorry but Phil coming back is not why they got good all of a sudden.

you talk about getting ego's to work together. well you just went and said how Red had all these hall of famers playing together well if they were all so good dont think they could have bumped heads and had a bunch of problems? I mean they would all have legit claims as to why they wanted to be featured a little more as the man. oh and what happened in Chicago when Jordan left? no rings for Phil. Phil wins because of the teams he inherits

Jackson. And peope complain to much about "oh he had a couple good players". For those of you who think crap like that, the Lakers haven't ben great since Shaq left. And look PHIL JACKSON rebuilt theteam. and they are in the finals AGAIN.

June 5, 2008  10:53 PM ET

HMMM my gut screams Auerbach

June 5, 2008  10:56 PM ET

Cleveland Lakers dont worry man I plan on touching on that in my third post in my second one I will be talking about red

June 6, 2008  12:19 AM ET

I did this TD a couple months ago.

June 6, 2008  01:20 AM ET

Jackson period. 9 titles in 16 seasons coaching. He has already surpassed Red for total wins, playoff wins, winning percentage, and will most likely surpass his championships. The Zen Master reigns supreme in the NBA

June 6, 2008  03:12 AM ET

dang down 5 without either person getting a second argument

June 6, 2008  03:47 AM ET

Last I checked mitch kupchak built the team cleveland. Phil just coaches them. However I would have to argue for Phil for the fact that what competition did the Celtics really have in the 60's when Red was coach. There is far more parity in the league now than there was when Red was coach.
