Ok so you have roughly $14,600,000 to make a team to best my team below....the only twist...

you can't use any of the players i have on my team....

think you can beat my team with double the payroll? let's see...

C Geovany Soto $401,000
1B Conor Jackson $419,500
2B Dan Uggla $417,000
3B Alex Gordon $406,000
SS Hanley Ramirez $439,000
LF Carlos Quentin $400,000
RF Justin Upton $393,000
CF Josh Hamilton $396,830

Field Totals: $3,272,330

SP Edison Volquez $392,500

SP Shaun Marcum $402,500
SP Tim Lincecum $405,000
RP Carlos Marmol $430,000
RP Matt Capps, $435,000
RP Tony Pena $405,500
CL Joakim Soria $426,500

Pitcher totals:
$3742000

Must use players at position they played majority of this season's games at (* exception: allowed to have 2 closers)

Total Payroll: $7,014,330

(Based on this year's stats)

(use this site: http://content.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/default.aspx
for salaries for 2008 only)

C-Russel Martin-500,000
1st-Prince Fielder-670,000

SS-Yunel Escobar-402,500
3rd-Mark Reynlds-396,500
LF-Ryan Braun-455,000
CF-Curtis Granderson-1,000,000
RF-Ryan Ludwick-411,000

SP-Scott Kazmir-3,785,000
SP-Cole Hamels-500,000
SP-Jon Danks-400,000
SP-Jon Lester-421,500
SP-Andy Sonnanstine-395,800
RP-Joba Chamberlain-390,000
RP-Jason Hammel-396,300
RP-JP Howell-397,400
CL-Jonathon Papelbon-775,000

11,753,000 total payroll

I'll argue hitters first:
Soto 23runs, 10Hr, 39RBI, .283avg, .915 OPS
Martin 28 runs, 4HR, 23RBI, .291avg, .831OPS
Soto has more HR, RBI and a higher OPS...edge Soto

Jackson .301, 6HR, 35RBI, 32Runs, 3SB, .914 OPS, .356 with RISP
Fielder .280, 10HR, 32RBI, 32R, 1SB, .843OPS, .277 with RISP
Jackon has everything but Hrs and a split on runs...edge Jackson

Uggla .309, 18HR, 41RBI, 46 runs, 3SB, 1.046 OPS
Pedroia .271, 4HR, 29RBI, 36R, 6SB, .698
Not even close - Uggla

Gordon
Reynolds No argument - Reynolds takes it

Ramirez .296, 50R, 12HR, 15SB, 27RBI, .901OPS
Escobar .303, 37R, 6HR, 2SB, 27RBI, .792OPS
Ramirez takes all but avg and an RBI split

Quentin .287, 38R, 15HR, 4SB, 50RBI, .961OPS
Braun .299, 33R, 16HR, 2SB, 46RBI, .917OPS
Close - but Quentin takes 4 of 6 (and has 15 less K's and 19 more BBs)

No arg...Ludwick takes it

Hamilton .321, 44R, 17HR, 68RBI, 2SB, .980OPS
Granderson .245, 27R, 7HR, 19RBI, 3SB, .747OPS
Not even close...Hamilton takes all but SBs

So recapping, I take 2B, SS, CF hands down and you take 3b and RF hands down
I take C, 1b, LF in closer matchups but still having better majority of stats.

Pitching staff in last arg

You said team. Not player against player. My SP average ERA is 3.22 with a 26-15 record. Not to mention alot of the guys you have are flash in the pan, early success guys that come August will be lucky to still be hitting .250, with the exception of Handley Ramirez whos is a superstar already. To say that Quentin is better than Ryan Braun is just plain silly. Braun is one of the best young players in the MLB and an all star for years to come. Bottom line...you may have the advantage at maybe 3 postions but your over achieving lineup couldnt touch my rotation.

the easiest way to argue a team is to go player by player. This TD clearly states based on 2008 stats. That means you take into account the year SO FAR. So don't worry about "flash in the pan"s...

Quentin is better than Braun in the majority of stats in 2008...hence it's not "plain silly"

Volquez - 8-2, 1.32 ERA, 1.16WHIP, 91SO
Ervin Santana - 8-2, 3.02 ERA, .98WHIP, 67 SO
Saunders - 9-2, 2.63ERA, 1.09WHIP, 39 SO
Marcum - 5-3. 2.52, .97WHIP, 71 SO
Lincecum - 8-1, 2.15, 1.22WHIP, 83 SO

So you wanna do it by team averages? Fine by me...

My team averages: 7.6W - 1.6L, 2.33 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 70Ks.

My starters have 38 wins (12 more than yours), almost a full run better era (my worst era is .20 BETTER than your AVERAGE!)

I mean we can go player by player or team by team, but either way you look at it my team is just better.

Jason Hammel - (He's technically a starter by rules 27.2 IP as a starter and 12.1IP as a reliver)

So my complete bullpen is better than yours who is lacking a player...not to mention my closer has a full run better era than yours.

In conclusion - I win field players - sweep pitching staff.....therefore i have the better team

Ok either way. MY entire team is guys who have had some proven level of success at some point in the majors thus far. You may have a few players with better numbers but it wont last. I know the argument is for RIGHT NOW, but if my team and your team met in the playoffs you wouldnt stand a chance. Granted both teams are farily young with little experience in October but half of the starters in your lineup will probably be in the bullpen by then anyway. And puffy face Hamilton will certainly be outed about steroids by then as well. So you have the stat advantage in some categories but id still take my team any day of the week.

This is just stupid, most players of that quality have much much bigger payrolls, so to get the same quality team withut using any of the same players should have at least 3 times the amount of money, if not 4 since yu took all of the besrt cheap players, and am not letting anyone else use them

June 6, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Brian Wilson at closer maybe?

June 8, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Good topic. I have to vote for Duquesne here. The hitting is just about even, but pitching is WAY in Duquesne's favor.

"And puffy face Hamilton will certainly be outed about steroids by then as well"

The guys has a drug test every 3 days, and has WAY to much to lose by cheating. He was touted as the next GREAT player out of high school, every thing he is doing is real and NATURAL.

Yeah, because anyone that is good is on steroids, right? >_>

June 8, 2008  12:22 PM ET

vote left. TWO ANGELS IN THE ROTATION. I would be a bad fan if i didn't vote left.

June 8, 2008  12:22 PM ET

I'm voting right, but Nick is correct in saying there is no way in hell Hamilton will ever use steroids again. He is THAT good. By the way, did anyone else read the article about him in SI a few weeks ago? Pretty good stuff.

June 8, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Oh, sorry. I mean voting left. My bad.

That guy has had one helluva ride. Ya gotta root for him after all he's been through. It's hard not to.

I was able to read it. I was amazed at what he goes through to stay clean. That must be very tough.

Vote left.
