*Assuming the D'backs, Cubs, and Phillies win their divisions*

I'm going to pick the Milwaukee Brewers.

I'll start with hitting.

Ryan Braun is a great young hitter who hits for a good average, gets on base enough, and has a lot power. They also have some other young guns in Prince Fielder, lots of power, Rickie Weeks who when gets on base, scores lots of runs. The Brewers have great outfielders in Gabe Kapler, who is really showing that the Brewers made the right move in signing him. Corey Hart is also showing strong strides that he is a good outfielder, and Mike Cameron is streaky, but when he is hot, he is hot, and he will get a lot of hits. Jason Kendall is doing well and that was a great pickup there. platooning Hall and Branyan is a good deal. JJ Hardy is doing bad..but he should get better as the season goes on.

Pitching....

The Brewers have good pitching in Ben Sheets, who is doing extremely well, Manny Parra, young and doing well, Jeff Suppan who is doing well, Seth McClung, and Dave Bush who is good at home.

The bullpen is actually not bad...Shouse, Mota, Torres, Villanueva, Tavarez, and Zach Jackson isn't to bad either.

Brewers=NL Wildcard winner

I would have to go with the St. Louis Cardinals due to the fact that with a make shift rotation and key hitters slumping, they are 3 games ahead of your Brewers in the NL Central.

I'll start with pitching- Jason Isringhausen, Chris Carpenter, Joel Piniero, Mark Mulder, and Matt Clement are on the verge from returning from injury.

In place of them, Todd Wellenmeyer has 7 wins and a sub 3 era, Adam Wainwright has been solid and has a 3.12 era (1.06 WHIP), Kyle Lohse has been brilliant the past 4 games and has a 3.87 era with 6 wins, and Branden Looper usually gives up around 3 runs

Ryan Franklin has also been a magnificent closer, just blowing his first save since april and the bullpen has 4 guys with an era below 3.

If these pitchers return and can be effective, I think they have the best pitching staff in the league with the most depth, especially Carpenter coming back, and might even win the NL Central.

Hitting wise, they have 5 guys hitting above or right near .300, and they have Pujols, argubly the best hitter in the game, and the stud Ryan Ludwick, with 13 hrs and a .313 average. And Rick Ankiel (injury) and Chris Duncan haven't even hit top form. If they hit...

Cardinals are a good choice, but the Brewers are better.

Isringhausen gives up a lot of runs and has a lot of blown saves. Piniero isn't that good of a pitcher and he isn't going to shock anyone. Mulder isn't going to help much (0-3, 12.27 ERA)

They aren't going to help much when they return (except Carpenter).

Todd Wellenmeyer isn't going to do well for the entire season, Wainwright will get worse as time goes on, Lohse has been good, but will get worse, and Looper is going to start giving up more and more runs.

Franklin isn't going to be the closer was Izzy returns, and when that happens, the Cards are going to lose games. Izzy is not doing his job well at all. He has given up too many blown saves.

Gagne is a good closer, and isn't as bad as Izzy. He isn't that good, but isn't terrible.

The Brewers are betting hitting wise than the Cardinals.

Pujols is just as good as Braun or Fielder, and the Brewers just have the talent needed to win the Wild Card.

Rick Ankiel isn't going to do as well as last year, and Chris Duncan isn't doing well.

The Brewers have JJ Hardy, who isn't a good hitter, but that one player isn't a concern for the Brewers.

First of all, what is your basis in saying all our pitchers will do terrible as the season commences? Will all these pitchers just get worse as time goes because you say so?

I would seriosuly doubt that. Izzy is a coin flip, and he doesn't need to be a closer because Franklin has been strong and may be better off as say a setup man. If he does bad, we don't even need him and can send him down, we are that strong.

In 7 starts, Piniero has only given up more than 3 runs ONCE. Mulder is better than that 12.27 era, I'm not saying hes going to be an ace, but could round out the rotataion as a #5 with an era around 4 or be a great long reliever.

Wellenmeyer, Wainwright, and Lohse will not just get worse randomly, they will stay solid in a weak NL. Looper can be a very effective starter (13 starts, gave up more than 4 runs twice). Or we can send him to the bullpen, where is lifetime era is below 3 and can be used as a LR, MR, or set up man.

Gagne, era of 7, 5 blown saves, hasn't been decent in years. He's terrible, Izzy is much better.

Pujols is hitting 60 points higher than Braun with identical produciton numbers. Fielder isn't close. Ludwick beats him in every stat.

I'm not saying my pitchers won't fall either, but I don't see my pitchers falling as much as yours.

La Russa will most likely put Izzy back into the closer's role when he returns from the injury, moving Franklin back to the bullpen.

I doubt that Mulder is going to have an ERA of 4. I see an ERA of around 5 for him. It isn't going to be easy getting that 12.27 ERA down that low of a 4. I feel I'm being generous giving him a 5 ERA, but 6 might be the most likely, but I'm seeing an ERA of around 5.

Wainwright might not get worse, but I'm seeing Wellenmeyer and Lohse getting worse. Looper might be good now, but can he last the entire season? The season is LONG, and I don't see him continuing that pace that he is on.

Izzy isn't much better and I can prove it. ERA of 8, 6 blown saves. He isn't much better, but he is actually worse.

Braun is an excellent hitter, and didn't start off too hot, but will do well for the remainder of the season. Prince Fielder is going to have more HR at the end of the year after starting off slow. Ludwick and Pujols started off fast, but Ludwick will start to cool down.

The Milwaukee BRewers will win the National League Wild Card.

La Russa will not automatically put Izzy in the stressful closer position, it makes no sense. He's going to ease him in from a different reliever position, and if does terrible we can send him down, our bullpen is really good already.

Mulder, as a number 5 starter, an era of 5 is still okay, but he doesn't even have to start once Carpenter comes back, plus theres Piniero who's been very good so far. He can be sent down or used as a reliver, we don't NEED him, it would just be a plus.

Looper doens't have to start the entire season, in the small chance he goes berserk, we can send him down or put him in the bullpen, wheres his lifetime era is belown 3, we have tremendoes depth.

Once again, why would Wellenmeyer and Lohse get worse? Just a feeling...

Izzy was playing somewhat injured, Gagne just sucks for a while now.

Pujols will get even better, with more RBI's and HR's, he traditionally gets stronger as the season progresses in those stats. I haven't seen much of Fielder to show he will improve, maybe he needs to start eating meat.

Why will Ludwick cool down... another feeling? If Ankiel and/or Duncan hits, this isn't even an argument.

Cardinals= NL Wildcard

alright cool lets get the semis kicked off right this should be good

June 6, 2008  04:58 PM ET

Braves.

June 6, 2008  07:32 PM ET

Carpenter still has 3 months of rehab to go...aka he isnt playing. Last year mulder came back from an injury and put up a 12.00 ERA. Izzy is old and has lost his touch...I like dyhards pick, maybe because I am a homer, and maybe because the Brewers are scorching hit lately.

**hot

June 6, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Carppenter just threw 41 pitches coming back from injury for surgery that takes 12 months to recover....

he had his surgery last july, those 3 months are infalted, he could be back as early as mid july

June 6, 2008  07:44 PM ET

Isrighausen is a coin flip, mulder can be effective and put up at least an era around 4

But if Izzy does well, they can kill any team with the bullpen

June 6, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Waiting on the complete arguments.

Unlikely. Once you get past age 28 and older, it takes pitchers longer to recover and get back into shape because their arm is already used and tired.

June 6, 2008  09:18 PM ET

I will wait on all the arguments to vote on this one

June 7, 2008  11:05 AM ET

True, but the extent of the damage from his pitching arm, according to the physios, wasn't as bad as most pitchers with the same injury, but still not good.

I wouldn't be suprised if he returns sooner, 41 pitches is good after 11 months

June 7, 2008  11:57 AM ET

I wouldn't be surprised if he returned sooner either, but there is a concern with him if he returns sooner. That concern would be if they didn't give him enough time to rehab.

June 7, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Dbacks, Cubs, Phils, and Brewers/Cards/whatever. Gawd the NL sucks.

June 7, 2008  05:05 PM ET

The Brewers suck on the road and that is the biggest difference between these two teams.
