Worst ever baseball deadline trades

Rules:The definition of a deadline deal is trades made before the July 31 so no offseason or waiver trades. Also list first argue later

My pick...

Cubs trade Lou Brock to the Cards for Ernie Broglio on June 15, 1964

My pick...........

A's send Mark McGwire to Cardinals for pitchers T.J. Mathews, Eric Ludwick and Blake Stein (July 31, 1997)

The Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio was the worst deadline deal ever.

First off the Cubs traded away a future hall of famer in Lou Brock for a guy who went 7-21 for them and retired after two years of being a Cub. Even right after the trade Brock just took off and ended up hitting .348 with 12 homeruns 33 stolen bases and 44 rbi's while Ernie went 4-7 and helped kill the Cubs shot's title hope while Brock helped the Cards win the world series that year and ended is career with these numbers
928 Stolen Bases
.343 On Base Percentage
.293 Average
2 Time World Series Champ
And much more

On the other hand McGwire was really a three season wonder for the Cards. Yes he did have back to back 60 plus homerun seasons and hit over .300 one year but Brock contributed way more then he did in the fact that the Cards won two world series with Brock hitting leadoff and Brocks a hall of famer while Mark didnt even get 600 homeruns and only spent five years a cardinal and in his last season people forget he hit .187 with only 29 homeruns and 64 rbi's. Plus when Mark was traded they had Giambi to fill his spot

In all the Lou Brock trade hurt the Cubs more then Marks trade hurt the A's

The Mark McGuire trade was the worst deadline deal ever.

McGwire hit 24 homers in the last two months of the 1997 season , then went on to hit 196 over the next four years before retiring. So the Cards got 220 home runs out of McGuire including his 60 homer year.

The A's Eric Ludwick went 1-4 with an 8.25 ERA in August and September 1997, and went downhill from there.

Blake Stein was 5-9 for the 1998 A's and then was dealt to the Royals, where he's been mediocre at best.

T.J. Mathews gave Oakland a few decent seasons and is now with the Astros.

The McGuire trade was worse than the Brock trade. That's why

Forfeited Turn

As you can see, the McGuire trade was worse. McGuire went on to hit his 70 homer season with the Cards. He also had 147 rbi's with cards in 1998 and 1999. The players that McGuire was traded for turned out to be busts, as you can see in my 2nd argument.

Happy Voting!!!!!

Take a look at some of the Pirates deals in the early 90's. Those deals had allot to do with their implosion after Bonds, Bonilla, Smiley and Drabek left town. The Pirates mortaged their future for some guys they thought would help get them past the Mets and Braves, none of whom did much of anything to help the cause.
