...will both resurrect and dominate womens tennis in the next 4-5 years.

This may sound like an outrageous prediction for a player that just won her 1st grand slam a few hours ago, but I'm prepared to back it up.

She's just 20, and unlike rival Maria Sharapova, she has steadily progressed through the rankings at a reasonable rate. Where as Maria won big at age 17 and struggled under high expectations.
Ivanovic has slowly climbed the rankings and graduated at a rate that most coaches would prefer.
Her game isn't flashy or overwhelming, but she is solid fundamentally and makes few mistakes. She doesn't have any glaring weaknesses either. A rare big player that uses a power/finesse combination well.

Her chief competition right now appears to be Sharapova, who is extremely talented, but equally inconsistent.
Serena is often out of shape and on the down side of her career. Likewise, Venus seems only competitive on grass now-a-days. Henin retired, leaving Ana and Maria in a 2 woman battle for supremacy.
But I give the edge to Ana who seems to have a more consistent style of play.

How she will resurrect tennis next.

Ana Ivanovic may in fact be the top player in the world right now, reflected by her top ranking. Not only will Sharapova continue to challenge Ivanovic for the top ranking for the next few years, but their will also be another competitor: twenty-three year old Jelena Jankovic, a countrywoman of Ivanovic.

Now Ivanovic has had the head to head advantage between the two, but these two are never going to show a Federer-Nadal type of dominance. You should expect these two, along with Sharapova, to dominate for the next three or four years.

The problem with you saying that she will dominate is that none of these players is head and shoulders above the others.

But back to Sharapova vs. Ivanovic. Sharapova is inconsistent? No way. Sure, she wasn't very good in the French Open this year, but she has had a very good season to date. She won the Australian Open for her third grand slam(two more than Ivanovic and only a year older), and she has started the year on a 27-2 run with three titles. You want inconsistent? Ivanovic is 20-6 this year with only one title. Plus, Sharapova leads the all-time series 3-2.

Ivanovic might be able to remain on top, but she won't dominate anything.

Another thing you fail to mention is that Maria is older than Ana and more experienced at the elite level.

Overall, Ana has had a more impressive season with more deeper appearances in tournaments than Maria, hence the meaning of more consistent. This is why she is now #1. If Maria was having such a great year, she wouldn't not have lost her ranking to Ana.

Ana has also done something already that seems like a longshot for Maria and that is win the French. The mark of a complete player is the ability to master all surfaces.
Ivanovic's game is strong on hard, grass and clay. Few can make that claim.

Now how will she resurrect the game? With the help of Maria. They should form a popular rivalry. Both girls are exciting players and they are both extremely hot and marketable. Watching them battle is like watching a Victoria secret model showdown mixed with tennis.
Maria is without a doubt the most popular female athlete in the world right now, but I expect Ana to quickly wrest that title from her with more steady performances and several head to head wins in the coming months.

Look for Ana to win at least 2 out of 3 of the next- Wimbledon. US Open, Olympic Gold. To go with French.

Maria Sharapova may not be as strong on clay as she is on the other surfaces, but she still isn't bad on it. She may have not been great this year, but she did make it to the semifinals last year in the French Open. So it isn't that farfetched that she will win it in the next couple of years. You can't base an opinion off of one tournament.

Her better surfaces are grass and hard court. Sharapova has won Wimbledon, along with both hard court grand slams. Therefore, there is no reason to expect Ivanovic to beat her either at Wimbledon or at the US Open.

Sharapova will remain the top female athlete in the world for a while. Ivanovic may be attractive, but she isn't as marketable as Sharapova for a couple reasons. Sharapova is a Russian who looks like she could be American. In fact, some people who just know the name would probably say she is American. People not involved with tennis have no idea who Ivanovic is.

Ivanovic not only can't dominate, but she just isn't known well enough to make the sport larger in the bigger countries.

Plus, the Olympics ultimately doesn't matter. The average fans only care about sports like swimming, track, and gymnastics in the Olympics.

Well, you are taking the current status quo. But tides change. It will take Ivanovic defeating Maria in a heavily exposed slam final for her to usurp Sharapova's popularity. Look for it to happen in Wimbledon or USO. Those events get the max exposure to American audiences. And that's where she will need to shine.

Sharapova's downfall will be because of her propensity to commit unforced errors. She is far behind Ivanovic in this category. That will catch up with her now that they are on equal ground. Remember that Ana has been in a state of development until now breaking through with this impressive slam win today.

Ana is already slated to appear on the cover of FHM and my guess is many mens mags will follow.

These ladies will help each other with exposure as their rivalry intensifies. But Ana will maintain the edge based on her ability to stay composed and Maria will become #2 in rank and popularity. Just like this week.

Already I have seen the highlights for Ana's win replayed here on american channels more than usual for say a Henin victory. This is always a sign of popularity to come.

Sharapova has had many unforced errors lately, but that doesn't change the fact that Sharapova has been better head-to-head. Ivanovic's only two wins in the series have come on clay(one), and on carpet. No big tournaments are ever on carpet.

Sharapova has beaten Ivanovic when it really matters. All three of her wins have come on hard court, like the US Open will be. And her last two wins have come in major tournaments, the Tour championships and the Australian Open Final. Sharapova has proven to be clutch. If these two do develop a rivalry, it could be like Nadal-Federer. One is a little better(Federer), but the other seemingly dominates head-to-head on all but one court.

You can't declare a person as the clear favorite after one big win. And she will become more popular, but it will be very hard to take over Maria's spot as an almost-American icon. Men love Sharapova, and many of them have still not heard the name Ana Ivanovic.

And women's tennis may not be resurrected for a long time. The talent pool is nowhere near what it was in the time of the Navratilova-Evert rivalry. There isn't enough excitement to pull in the average sport's fan, even with the attractive players.

I think this is my first tennis throwdown. Thank god for the free internet at the 755 club here at Turner Field. I just got an internship with a local sports radio station that plays ESPN, so they gave me some tickets, and they have me writing a test piece. Not a big station or anything, but I love it.

is sexy !!!!

June 7, 2008  10:09 PM ET

She is pretty good looking

June 7, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Heck, the only women's tennis match I'd watch would be Ivanovic vs Sharapova, just for the sex appeal.

June 7, 2008  10:18 PM ET

Exactly my point of how they will resurrect tennis.

June 7, 2008  10:42 PM ET

You also said that Ivanovic will resurrect tennis, not her and Sharapova together.

June 7, 2008  10:49 PM ET

Yeah, but she's a part of it. Maria can't do it alone because she stinks on clay and follows a great tournament with a terrible one. Ivanovic will consistently be in finals and getting the needed exposure.
Together they will resurrect tennis, but Ana will eventually become more important to that role.

June 7, 2008  10:50 PM ET

But good throwdown. Good arguments.

June 7, 2008  10:56 PM ET

Also, Kournakova ended up very popular and she was a **** tennis player. I see no reason why Ivanovic will not have her same sex appeal with a much stronger game

June 7, 2008  11:08 PM ET

Sharapova and Kournakova were very Americanized at a young age, which Ivanovic has not been. Not yet at least.

And good throwdown to you as well.

Wow. A ton of votes so far.

Vote to the right.
Ana has a long way to go before we start thinking about marketing the next Chris Evert vs Martina Navratilova rivalry, either of whom would be giving both of these two a tennis lesson.
